You have to hit each note 3x per second in order to hold the sustain. They're basically there for when the drummer is just hitting the same note lots without any kind of important amount of notes. They're usually found towards the end of songs when the drummer just kind of bangs away.
This is for snare, tom, cymbal, any roll that the drummer does.
I think this would be a very good feature to add, and extremely valuable for drum songs, since charting and playing a roll on drums is usually difficult.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EornXs3cWwE This video is also good for showing the freestyle mode in-between notes, which I think adds 1 point for each hit on the drums, not for sure if thats the correct formula though. That is also a feature that would be really nice to add.
