tenfourfox - issue #42

Localized versions

Posted on Mar 22, 2011 by Quick Lion

* I read everything above and have demonstrated this bug only occurs on 10.4Fx by testing against this official version of Firefox 4 (not applicable for startup failure) - specify:

  • This is a startup crash or failure to start (Y/N): N

  • What steps are necessary to reproduce the bug? These must be reasonably reliable.

Start tenfourfox on a non english system

* Describe your processor, computer, operating system and any special things about your environment.

IMac Power PC G4 1,25Ghz

No localization is included into the package. I Try to replace en-en.jar by the official fr.jar in chrome directory but didn't work. I manage to change search engines, and dictionaries...

How could we localize tenfourfox ?

Posted on Mar 22, 2011 by Massive Rhino

TenFourFox has slightly different strings than Firefox. It is localized in the same way, but needs certain additional translations. If people develop working JARs (remember that the chrome manifest must also be updated to reflect this), then I will accept them into the changesets. Obviously this is not something I can do myself, but I'll mark this Accepted just so that people know the issue is acknowledged.

Managed to make a working jar for french translation (joined) and a working chrome.manifest

The version can be localized with a standard firefox jar except

  • branding folder
  • updates.dtd located in the locale//mozapps/update/
  • has a special localization in the locale/bowser/ folder

I hope it will help Victorien

And I forgot the dictionary files. The have to be put in the /MacOS/dictionaries/ folder.

Nice work! I'd like to get more people trying your version, so let me point some people here. If I changed this bug to French localization, would you be willing to be its owner and accept bug reports? I'll then spin off individual bugs for each translation that people can own.

I have a friend using a G4/7450 on Mac OS 10.4.11. I would like to point to him a ready TenFourFox in French. Since I don't use Mac OS X (I'm on GNU/Linux), I don't know what to do exactly to localize TenFourFox.

When I download "TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app.zip" and I extract the archive, then a folder "TenFourFox7450.app" is created. Do I only have to put files contained in "French Localization.zip" and dictionary files in their corresponding emplacement and compress again the folder "TenFourFox7450.app" in ZIP?

Thanks.

@classilla I think your idea is great.

@contact@jpfleury.net To build a french version of TenFourFox :

Uncompress French localization

Copy all file in

TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOs

Then copy dictionaries files in

TenFourFox7450-4.0s.app/Contents/MacOS/dictionaries/

Posted on May 2, 2011 by Happy Bear

Working on German. This will take a while, though, and I can't promise I'll get it done completely.

In addition to what narcoti...@gmail.com mentioned (thanks!), there seem to be some more files in locale/browser (as taken from German-Intel-FF) that don't work as expected in Ten4Fox.

Posted on May 3, 2011 by Happy Bear

Here is the "changeset" for the German localization. Looks good so far, but needs to be tested thoroughly.

Right-click on Ten4Fox.app to show package contents. Changeset includes:

  • chrome.manifest (goes into MacOS, replaces original file)
  • de.jar, de.manifest (they go into chrome)
  • de-DE.aff, de-DE.dic (they go into dictionaries)

I need someone who is able to trigger the specific Ten4Fox update messages (manual download) to look at the line breaking which is very akward in the original. I can't test it in the browser too see if I got it right.

About the About box: I took the en-US version and translated line by line. It's very different from the FF version.

Posted on May 3, 2011 by Massive Rhino

I think it's probably time we split this bug up, leaving issue 42 as a generic "translations wanted" bug, and then giving French and German their own issue numbers assigned to narcotix and chtrusch. Any objection?

No objection. :-)

Posted on May 3, 2011 by Massive Rhino

Okay. narcotix, any objection? I will point the bugs back here so that people can download the original pieces.

The other piece of the puzzle is automating installation. I think we should keep the "de facto" format we have here (lang.jar, lang.mainfest, lang-REGION.aff, lang-REGION.dic) so that we can create an installer (the installer would then, given a zip file, unzip it, copy the files over, and modify chrome.manifest). That bug is issue 61.

Posted on May 4, 2011 by Happy Bear

After working with the localized versions (under 10.4/G3 and 10.5/G4) for a while, it looks like localizing Ten4Fox is generally unproblematic. So, we should be seeing more localized versions soon. Firefox is very big in Europe; additional versions in (at least) Spanish, Dutch and Italian would make a huge difference. Ten4Fox is gaining popularity in German forums (heise.de, macnews.de etc.), and in comments, people are asking for a German version.

The only minor issue (in both German and French) I found is that the Help Menu has no spotlight box. This only concerns 10.5, obviously, and this box is useless anyway since there's no local help available for Ten4Fox. I hope this isn't too much of an issue because I don't have the slightest idea were to start looking to find a solution.

Hi, Here is a brand new French localization with minor corrections and the "aboutDialog" bug fix.

For the addon problem you have to change the "general.useragent.locale" in about:config

By default it is "en-US" for france, I change it for "fr"

In FF5, some strings have changed, e.g. Preferences>Privacy. I was hoping to re-use the 4.0 jar file because none of the UI changes that were promized in April have made it to FF5 (social websites stuff, home tab etc). But now I see it's probably safer to re-build the jar with the files from our localized Intel FF5 versions. I will make the German jar + installer app once FF5 final is out.

I don't know if Narcotix is still working on it. In general, there's no translation work to be done because Firefox 6/French/Intel is already there. It's more a technical matter of making a working .jar file from the Intel version's omni.jar. The installer application (issue 61) for TFF4 can easily be modified for TFF6. If you like, I can email you the exact steps I use for the German version.

I noticed that, starting with TFF 5, in Preferences -> Privacy in the German localization some text is pushed towards (and slightly beyond) the right window border. In TFF 5 and 6, this was sort of tolerable and just a cosmetic bug, but in TFF 7, there are parts of words missing which is not tolerable.

I found a workaround for the time being by shortening one of the strings. See screenshots attached. Since the Preferences window keeps changing a lot, though, we might run into bigger problems in the future. For TFF 8, therefore, it would be nice to either fix the underlying problem, viz. changing the Preferences window width for the German locale if needed, or to fix whatever problem there is that makes some of the German localization strings suddenly not fit in the TFF version of the Preferences window.

So: Is there a way to define the width of the preferences window in the localization files? The French Preferences window is much wider than either the German or the English one (and therefore is luckily not affected by this right now), but I don't know if this is defined somewhere or calculated automatically.

Also, is there a way to make the drop-down menus shorter? They became considerably wider in TFF 7 (for no apparent reason), which adds to the problem.

Finally, it should be checked if this problem is in the German Intel Firefox 7, and if so, what they do about it. I found no Bugzilla bug report about this.

We have a Chinese (zh-TW) translation in issue 128, which I've duped to this one.

Posted on Jan 31, 2012 by Happy Bear

Great!

This seems to work for TFF 9.0 if I manually set general.useragent.locale to zh-TW. I'm completely illiterate in Chinese and can't tell if everything works as it should. I guess this is „traditional Chinese“, right?.

Problems: It states „Firefox“ instead of TenFourFox in the browser window. Check for Updates doesn't work (XUL error).

I'd suggest, now that the ESR is out, we might think about a central download place for our 10.x localizations on Google Code, i.e. the German and French locale installers and the Chinese xpi, to make this more public and maybe get more people onboard.

Chris, I think this is the right idea, especially because we are running out of attachment space. Before posting them, which translations will we specifically support? What packs are ready for 10 ESR?

Posted on Feb 3, 2012 by Happy Bear

For 10.0, we have German so far.

Traditional Chinese 10.0 is there and looks very good to me, but the bugs mentioned in comment 73 (Update dialog and Firefox branding) are still standing.

French is there up to 8.0. I think I've got experience by now to attempt to make the French 10.0 installer in case Victorien has stopped working at it, but I'm not fluent enough in French, so it must be checked first before it's published outide issue 61. Demand is certainly there.

There were two people interested in making Spanish and Russian who sent me mails, but I never heard of them again.

Japanese xpi (9.0 only) isn't shippable; I contacted the developers but they don't seem to be interested in making it any more Tenfourfoxish or to contribute here. It's just the Firefox jar files transplanted to TFF with no additional strings or polish.

Regarding attachment space, I could delete most of the older German installer app versions since the 10.0 version contains all langpacks for 4 to 10 (in case someone needs to stay at an earlier version for whatever reason).

Posted on Feb 3, 2012 by Massive Rhino

Let's clean the old versions then. I'll let you do that since I don't want to delete anything still of use by mistake. That's a shame about the Japanese translation; we have a pretty good one for Classilla.

Ian, thanks for the explanation. Indeed, "Check for Updates…" doesn't exist in Firefox, it only exists in TenFourFox, as well as a few other strings, including text in the About dialog. Preferably, they should also be translated to the target language, as was done for French and German. That's the fun part: You can be creative. But if they stay English, that's fine with me, too, as long as the XUL works correctly.

When 10.0.3 comes out, we will be essentially ceasing new development on 10 (just ESR builds after that) and continuing with unstable "as far as it goes" up to 16, assuming we get there. So now appears to be a good time to put international versions in the official downloads because it is unlikely strings will change for the life of 10 ESR. Assuming these are not version dependent (i.e., a patch set for 10.0.3 will still work on, say, 10.0.8), it looks like we have fr-FR, de-DE and zh-TW ready to go, and the locale installer?

Posted on Mar 6, 2012 by Happy Bear

If no strings change (incl. credits in the about dialog), the French & German langpacks can be used for all minor versions of TFF 10. The same should be true for Trad. Chinese.

See comment 92 for an explanation. For the 10.0.3 xpi, you'll probably have to wait until it's released.

Excuse me, I can't write something by English. My english level is not good.

SO I wrote it by Tranditional Chinese.

我以後可能無法隨時有機會或有時間注意tefourfox的版本更新,並且即時的製作出繁體中文語系檔案,

I..after..maybe..no time..no chance..follow tefourfox new version..quicky..and made zh_TW file.. quicky ,

所以會變成可遇不可求,但如果有時間有機會,那就做一個算一個.

maybe (I can't translate it)..but if I have time and . chance .. (I can't translate it)..

---

http://translate.google.com.tw/

I later may not readily have the opportunity or time to note that tefourfox version updates, and real-time production out of the Traditional Chinese language file, it will become a goodly portion of luck, but if you have time have a chance,

then do a numerical one.

Ian, I just realised that there will never be a Firefox 10.0.3, because FF is now at version 11. There probably will be a 10.0.3ERS version, but this may take a while, becaus eit doesn't seem to be in synch with the "normal" version (or TFF). You'll probably have to base you xpi for TFF 10.0.3 on Firefox 10.0ESR or Firefox 10.0.2.

Posted on Jul 29, 2012 by Happy Bear

If we have a Spanish native speaker here who can do it (or at least who volunteers to translate our few custom strings and the strings for the installer app [see issue 61]), then we'll have a Spanish version.

Posted on Sep 27, 2012 by Massive Rhino

17 aurora is now available for the interest of localizers. It will replace our 10.x versions. You can consider the strings frozen.

Posted on Sep 29, 2012 by Happy Bear

Test installer for 17 posted in issue 61.

Localizing 17 in principle works exatly like 10. There's only one additional folder in the locale jar ("pdfviewer"). The new features (pdfjs, inspect element etc.) seem to work flawlessly. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704756 still hasn't been fixed in the German Firefox, so I fiexed it again in our localization.

Posted on Nov 23, 2012 by Happy Bear

A Spanish translation would be excellent.

You could either look at the Localization Wiki page http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/Localization how this is done and try it. Basically, we just need to put the Spanish Firefox/Intel language files into TenFourFox and then put this package into the Locale Installer.

Or, if you find this too technical or complicated, you could translate just one file with strings that are specific to TenFourFox (see attachment).

Received email yesterday with a request for a Russian installer. I could do this since I speak a little Russian and can read Cyrillic, but again (as with Spanish), I need a native speaker to translate the TenFourFox specific strings (see file attached to comment 109).

There's no Dutch translation yet.

The only thing I'd need to make a Dutch langpack installer is the translated file with our custom strings (http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=61#c260), everything else comes fromm the Dutch version of Firefox.

Or, if you want to make the installer yourself, start here: http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/Localization

Thank you!

For the website/download section, we need this text in Asturian:

TenFourFox speaks your language.

To install Asturian language support in TenFourFox 17.0.x, download this installer, unzip it, and double click the installer to begin.

Some minor things:

  • The About dialog becomes too wide because the "Licensing information etc." line at the bottom has words that are too long. Can you shorten them so that the dialog isn't wider than the background image?
  • There are buttons in the preferences cut off to the right. This is probably also in Firefox, so you could leave it at that, or shorten the bottom line "Camudar les preferencies…" and then submit this to Bugzilla. We've done this with a bugfix for the German version, and it was indeed upstreamed and is now in the official Firefox.
  • The installer should be named 17.0.x, so that people know they can use it for any 17.0 version.

Posted on Jul 16, 2013 by Swift Panda

The problem with dialog preferences in macosx was solved in Asturian Firefox 22, but I know how to fix it (this can be usefull for the German version): Into the ISOCODE.jar file go to locale/browser/preferences/preferences.dtd and edit prefWinMinSize.styleMac for asturian I set "width: 55em; min-height: 40em;" where "55em" is the minimun size of the dialog.

I attach the new asturian installer and the asturian flag for the web site, and this are the translations for download section:

TenFourFox fala la to llingua.

Pa instalar la llingua asturiana en TenFourFox 17.0.x, baxa esti instalador, estráilu, y calca dos veces p'aniciar l'instalador.

Thank you.

Thank you, I guess the installer from comment 121 is ready to go live. The flag icon will do for now, especially for an installer that will typically only run once. For 24 I'll make an icon with the workflow I used for the other ones for consistency.

Thanks for the hint regarding the dialog width. May come in handy some day.

Are you going to update the download section on http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ with the Asturian installer, or you will wait for next stable realese? I like to know because I want to announce the Asturian translation of TenFourFox to the Asturian community, so if not I can host this first Asturian realease on our own servers.

Thank you.

Posted on Jul 23, 2013 by Massive Rhino

Chris, if you're satisfied with it, I suppose we could run it now, since there's only a couple more versions to go of 17.

Posted on Jul 23, 2013 by Happy Bear

Yes, what I mentioned in comment 120 was fixed, so I'm satisfied.

I guess we should come up with some rules for 24 regarding how far we can deviate from TFF/en-US and the localized Firefox versions.

E.g. the dialog width fix for Asturian is very good, but we now have a preferences dialog that's much wider than usual. Mikelglez, did they fix this for later versions of Firefox the way you did, or did they shorten the strings?

Also, Cameron: Is it okay for translators to put their name in the About dialog the way Mikelglez did?

Posted on Jul 23, 2013 by Massive Rhino

I haven't installed the translation, so I didn't notice. What does it look like?

As far as XUL deviations, for 17 and TenFourFox.next (22 or 24) it's not really critical since we're unlikely to have big swings from Firefox chrome. However, it might be a problem for Australis, so I would say we should discourage it except where necessary. I'm personally not greatly concerned about minor UI differences as long as they don't change functionality.

Posted on Jul 23, 2013 by Happy Bear

Alright, I think so, too.

Here's what Asturian looks like (screenshot). The wider prefs dialog is needed for the privacy tab.

I guess that's fine for the About dialog, as long as future ones that people want to add to their own translations follow a similar form. The wider pref dialog is acceptable.

I think that the preferences dialog on Firefox was fixed for all languages. Asturian shows the long strings, that I have to short on 10.4Fox 17, but the dialog grows to show all content in Firefox 22 (I don't know on early versions). I don't have an Intel Mac to test it, but a friend made this shots of Firefox 22 in German and Asturian for me, you can see that the dialog shows the complete strings.

A Bugzilla bug would be more helpful; I can't find one, cursorily. If the patch is relatively minor, I would be willing to backport it to 17 for this purpose.

Posted on Jul 23, 2013 by Happy Bear

Indeed, TFF 22 behaves in the same way, the German pref pane is slightly wider than the English one (German test installer in issue 61), so we won't have to worry about this anymore. I don't think it's necessary to backport the general fix to 17, though, because Asturian is already fixed, and our other languages don't have the problem. I couldn't find a Bugzilla bug, either.

Localization was unspectacular so far. Some changes:

  • All localization files have been moved from Mac OS to Resources in the application package.
  • space constraints/truncated strings in the Prefs window are gone because of UI change (prefs moved to tab)
  • Check for Updates… has bee moved to the Help menu; localization string remains in baseMenuOverlay.dtd.
  • Addon Manager: Plugin section with warning about Plugin support is obsolete (
  • plugins.dtd>

Knezzen, thak you. I've had a look at Swedish Firefox, and they call a plugin "insticksmodul", not "tilläg" (=add-on?). Is it acceptable to use the following?

Here's Polish and Swedish (plus German again with two small copy&paste errors corrected in the installer script and in the copyright date/About dialog).

For Swedish, I went with:

"TenFourFox stödjer inte insticksmoduler för innehållet du försöker visa."

If the grammar of "insticksmodul" is wrong, please advise. Since we're running out of time (see comment 171) I opted for "real artist ship" rather than "perfectionist" in this case.
