Locale installer

Posted on May 3, 2011 by Massive Rhino

This should be a (probably iHook-based?) executable that finds a locale and installs it. It should do the chrome.manifest changes itself so that multiple locales can be installed simultaneously, and copy the jars and dictionaries to the right places.

I've created a locale installer. It is based upon the Open(Libre)Office langpack installer. It use apple script and bash to process.

It locate an installation of TenFourFox, say if multiple copies are installed et verify that the selected app it the good one.

Then it uncompress the tarball.tar.bz2 is the archive with a relative path (for exemple /Contents/MacOS/dictionaries/fr.dic)

At the moment I did find the way to modify the about:config variable.

narcoti...@gmail.com: Great! I'm going to test this with different configurations, and if classic approves it, I would like to make a German version. Probably the easiest way is translating your french strings in the osascript directly, if you don't object.

Two issues here:

  • I'm completely unexperienced with creating archives via the command line, so I may need help creating a .tar/bz2 archive (if .zip can't be used). Or can you recommend a GUI archiver app?

  • What does the update.locale file do?

Generally, would't it be easier to prepare TFF for different languages and let people download the complete versions like on the FF download site?

French langpack installer works fine in 10.4. Does what it should do. Couldn't find any bugs except: Shouldn't the button read "Anuler" oder "Quitter" instead of "Installer" when an invalid application is selected?

Thanks chtru...@web.de, I correted the abort button.

  • For the tar.bz2 archive you can make it with the GuiTar utility. Compress your "Contents" folder in tar, then compress your Contents.tar archive in bz2. Rename it "tarball.tar.bz2".

  • Update.local is used for the official update process. I don't know if it is useful but just in case I chose to translate it.

For a quicker translation you can use LibreOffice langpack german's strings.

Here's the German version. Thanks, narcoti...@gmail.com for your help.

What I did in addition: - Changed info.plist strings to TTF-relevant information. - Made clear in the application name and the installer script that TFF 4.0.1 is needed. (Alternatively, can't we just check for TFF 4.0.x and make a new langpack for TFF 5.0 if nothing has changed?)

Here is th V.1 beta of french localization for TFF 4.0.1. Now capable to update your profile and set the correct general.useragent.locale.

Change log :

  • force TFF to quit before installation and profil updating
  • Update all firefox profiles with general.useragent.locale "fr" string
  • New dialogs in the installation process
  • some bugfix
  • Info.plist update (thanks chtru...@web.de)

Works nicely.

Is there a technical reason why you include an uncompressed "contents" folder (in addition to the tar/bz2 archive) plus an uncompressed locale folder (in addition to the jar) in the application? Have I overlooked something?

Posted on May 21, 2011 by Happy Bear

BTW, what happens if the user does not have a "Firefox" folder in Application Support? For example, if they installed a new Mac OS XC system/User, downloaded TFF from Safari and wanted to switch it to their language before opening TFF for the first time.

Posted on May 27, 2011 by Quick Lion

Here is the beta 2.

Change log : - added the line : pref("general.useragent.locale", "fr"); in MacOS/defaults/perfs/firefox-l10n.js for a default french localization if TFF was never lunch - added try/end try for ignore profile updating if no profile was created (TFF never launched) - remove the useless contents folder in the installer's package (was there for testing)

I think we should create a drag'n drop locale installer. It would me more user friendly. What do you think about it ?

Posted on May 27, 2011 by Happy Bear

To be honest, I'm more a fan of the installer application. For the droplet, users have to open a Finder window, locate their TFF application and drag it onto the droplet. If they don't understand what a droplet is, they'll try to lauch it (thinking it's an installer), it doesn't do anything -> they come here and complain. Most people don't read instructions, they just doubleclick what's on their desktop.

Here is the German language pack installer application for TenFourFox 4.0.2x. (corresponds to TFF FR langpackV1.0Beta2)

——Documentation——

  • Quits TFF if it's running
  • Looks for TFF.app(s) and lets the user chose one if applicable
  • Checks if TFF version is correct
  • Adds /chrome/de.jar, de.manifest, /dictionaries/de-DE.aff, de-DE.dic
  • Replaces /chrome.manifest (de), /defaults/pref/firefox-l10n.js (useragent.locale de)
  • Looks for user profile(s) in ~/Application Support/Firefox and writes general.useragent.locale de in prefs.js

  • de.jar contains German FF4/Intel files except /branding/brand.dtd, brand.properties: TFF /de/mozapps/update/updates.dtd (manual update strings) /browser/baseMenuOverlay.dtd (Check for updates… string) /browser/aboutDialog.dtd (TFF's own dialog)

Tested with TFF 4.0.2 final & shortened some wordy strings.

To me, the installer app now seems pretty much feature complete and stable, and should be tested and evaluated by a broader range of users.

Posted on Jun 14, 2011 by Happy Bear

Yes, there will be a German Installer App once Firefox 5 and TFF 5 (final versions) are out. There are some changes in FF/TFF 5 compared to 4.0.x, making new language files necessary. Also, a handfull of other things must be changed in the browser app and the user profile when switching the language.

German langpack installer for TFF 6.0.1. There will be no German version of 6.0, so please update to 6.0.1 first.

Posted on Sep 23, 2011 by Happy Bear

Cameron, TFF 7.x now has two executables inside (firefox-bin and firefox). Which of them is the right one to kill with the langpack installer script when we want to make sure the application isn't running while it (and the user profile) are being modified? For TFF 4.x - 6.x we do it this way:

try do shell script ("killall -kill firefox-bin") end try

(The script asks the user to save their work and quit TFF first, just in case they ignore it the app is killed).

Posted on Sep 23, 2011 by Massive Rhino

If you're planning to have the installer still work for 4-6, then specify both, i.e.,

killall -kill firefox-bin firefox

If it's just 7, then kill firefox (firefox-bin is going away).

Assigning control to you, since I haven't heard from narcotix.

Posted on Sep 23, 2011 by Happy Bear

Thanks! It's just 7 – the installer app is version specific. One could extend it to cover all previous versions with different tarballs (would be user friendlier), but I have no idea how to script that without Narcotix's help. For the time being, I'd rather not mess with it and keep the installer in the stable state it's in right now.

New installer script.

Can install multiple translation strings.

You have to make a specific tarball for each translation for exemple tarball6.0.1.tar.bz2 tarball4.0.2.tar.bz2

and correct the list : set TFFVersions to {"4.0.2", "6.0.1"}

That needs to be tested.

Hm, it doesn't seem to be working quite right. Even if I feed it with the correct property list items

set VersionKey to value of property list item 7 set BundleName to value of property list item 3

it's still not happy with the version number. I.e. when I say

set TFFVersions to {"4.0.3", "5.0", "6.0.1"}

none of these is accepted. The bundle name is accepted, though ("true").

Just tested with 4.0.2 and 6.0.1. It works well. Are you sure you have a tarball4.0.2.tar.bz2 for 4.0.2 tarball6.0.1.tar.bz2 for 6.0.1 etc ?

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by Happy Bear

I'm sorry, it still doesn't work here. The installer script doesn't recognize TFF 4.0.2 as a valid installation. Also, there is no TFF 6.0.2 (yet).

Can someone else test this please and report if it works? Download 4.0.2 here http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/downloads/list

I have no idea what's wrong here.

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by Massive Bird

Sorry I wrote 6.0.2, I should have wrote 6.0.1.

Could you just add in the script just after

tell application "System Events" tell property list file thePListPath tell contents set VersionKey to value of property list item 4 -- the version returned in 4.0.1 form set BundleName to value of property list item 6 -- the identifier string must be "com.floodgap.tenfourfox"

    end tell
end tell

end tell

display dialog VersionKey

And tell me what it return ?

Thanks

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by Happy Bear

When I run the installer app itself with that command inserted, it doesn't return anything and just crashes. If I run it from the SCript Editor, it returs an Applescript error message:

Can’t make {{|CFBundleTypeIconFile|:"document.icns", |CFBundleTypeName|:"HTML Document", |CFBundleTypeOSTypes|:{"HTML"}, |CFBundleTypeExtensions|:{"html", "htm", "shtml", "xht", "xhtml"}, |CFBundleTypeRole|:"Viewer"}, {|CFBundleTypeIconFile|:"document.icns", |CFBundleTypeName|:"Text Document", |CFBundleTypeOSTypes|:{"TEXT", "utxt"}, |CFBundleTypeExtensions|:{"text", "txt", "js", "log", "css", "xul", "rdf"}, |CFBundleTypeRole|:"Viewer"}, {|CFBundleTypeIconFile|:"fileBookmark.icns", |CFBundleTypeName|:"document.icns", |CFBundleTypeOSTypes|:{"GIFf", "JPEG", "PNGf"}, |CFBundleTypeExtensions|:{"jpeg", "jpg", "png", "gif"}, |CFBundleTypeRole|:"Viewer"}} into type string.

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by Happy Bear

If I change (because right now the script really does call the wrong items from the info.plist)…

set VersionKey to value of property list item 7 -- the version returned in 4.0.1 form set BundleName to value of property list item 3 -- the identifier string must be "com.floodgap.tenfourfox"

…I get returned 4.0.2 in the dialog. But it still isn't valid.

Tested on 10.5.8/G4 7450 and 10.4.11/G3 with the appropriate TFF versions.

It works now. This is great. Thank you so much! I'll test this more thoroughly and am going to incorporate it in the next German Installer app (7.0) if no problems occur.

I would like to do this in a way that not all versions are supported. Only the final version of each major version plus the most recent version that's out now. So that we encourage people to update to the most secure version possible. E.g., if they, for whatever reason, can't go higher than TFF 4, they should update to 4.0.3. (The French 4.0.2 tarball can be re-used for 4.0.3, there were no GUI changes in-between that would affect the localizaion).

Ok so Here is the french multi locale installer. For now it is only compatible with 4.0.3 and 7.0. I also make cosmetic change in the installer script.

====================================================

Change log in the script

  • Cosmetic ajustements in the dialog boxes
  • All the translatable strings are now located in the same place in the script
  • New verification step in the script : if the software is TFF but the version isn't compatible with the installer the script will display a message with all compatible versions
  • for more simplicity a Localeident string was added. The profile will be updated without tweaking the code ie : set theText to "user_pref(\"general.useragent.locale\", \"" & Localeident & "\");"

====================================================

Known bugs in the translation (see screen shot)

  • Didn't manage to translate the search string in the spotlight box of the help menu for 4.0.3 and 7.0
  • In 7.0 the homepage has a strange behavior. It displays some text in... German. No idea why.

That means the installer crashes on your system. Otherwise it would at least tell you something (success, no success, choose application, authenticate or whatever). Since we're essentially using the OpenOffice langpack installer script, which should be well-tested, have no real idea what might be causing this.

Can you download the script attached, double-click it (it should open in ScriptEditor), run it (it will kill TFF if it gets so far), and tell us - any error messages that might appear - the event log

Thanks!

French translation is on the grill.

But I have a proposal for the installer.

We should make a real universal installer. A langpack localized in all translatable langage and that can apply the right translation depending on the system locale (and the choice made by the user). Instead of having an installer for each langage.

Localize the installer is'nt hard to do. Applescript offers and option to do so with .lproj files.

But if we include all translation in a simple app this app will be huge.

The best way should allow the universal installer to download the appropriate archive on a server depending on the locale and the version.

For exemple I'd like to translate TFF 4.0.1 on a french os. "defaults read -g AppleLocale" returns "fr_FR" TFF Version is 4.0.1. The program will download an uncompress the file :

http://an.exemple.server.com/locale/fr_FR/4.0.1/archive.tar.bz2

It would require an hosting service.

What do you think about this ?

Posted on Nov 14, 2011 by Happy Bear

Sounds interesting – I thought about this as well: One installer app that speaks the right language and lets the user choose what language to install to TFF. But this is also pretty complicated to do.

Because the hosting service must be maintained/paid(?) and be available also 5 years from now if somebody wants to resurrect an old Mac. A tarball is about 500 KB, so we would have about 5 MB for the installer app right now (which isn't too large I think).

Another problem (which is why I would speak against the whole project right now) is that we will have to wait for each other. I.e. the Real Universal Installer for TFF 9 can only be released when all langpacks for 9 are finished. If we get more languages on board this might become even more of problem if a localization is delayed or never done. Then we would have to release an incomplete installer (confusing to people). I try to make the langpack as soon as the final version is released so that people get it as soon as possible, but I don't always have the time. So why should e.g. the French have to wait for the German langpack?

German langpack installer for TFF for TFF 9.0 (and earlier).

Changes: Shortened some German strings in the About dialog (bottom line) to not make it too wide (see http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=42#c55). Shortened "Standard wiederherstellen" string in Toolbar customization dialog to fix cropped button. Hi everybody! I've got an idea about localization!!! I'm no developper of any kind, but I've pimped into Firefox, TFF and the German langpack installer to see how localization works, and it doesn't look that awful to do, I've tried copying things from the old "Universal French installer beta1" in TFF10 and I had French menus displaying but the browser gave only errors...

Here's my idea about the process we need, you tell me if it's possible: say I'm a Brazilian, I download Firefox 10 (Intel) in Brazilian, I download TFF10 and then I run the same kind of installer as "German langpack installer" that, instead of installing what it has got inside its own package asks for "where is the Intel version?", peeks what he needs in it and installs it in TFF, does the necessary tricks, and it's done! :-)

This way, the installer could work for any language of the current version! Doesn't it sound a good idea? :-D I think there are plenty of people desperately waiting for a localization, be it French or else! It also would spread TFF for non-English users. I'm quite sure it wouldn't take that much time for our Master classi...@floodgap.com or for the venerable chtru...@web.de to manage doing the tricks for other languages, pleeaaaase, be good to us! ;-) (I would do it myself if I was enough a technician...) Forgive me if it's more complicated that it seems. My deepest respects! :-)

An installer app like this would be awesome. It would save me a lot of time :-) It could be done if the process was completely mechanical, i.e. if it only involved putting files from one location to another. But TFF isn't Firefox, it has some extra stuff in it that needs to be translated by a real person because it just doesn't exist in the Intel FF version.

French langpack installer for TFF 10.0.2 (and TFF 4 & 7). This is a test version as I am no native speaker of French. Please confirm that everything is correct. Besides the french FF 10.0.2 files, I used some strings from the TFF 7 jar and do hope I copied&pasted everything where it belongs.

Download here: http://tinyurl.com/TFF10-0-2Fr

Issues: - the About dialog has never been completely localized. I someone could give me translations for the text highlighted in the attachment, I'd just put in we'd have a complete dialog. - There is an issue in the About dialog when translated string are too long. I've had this in the German version as well, so I shortened some strings. The French dialog becomes too wide (black stripe right to the background star field image) with Narcotix' original translation. I shortened "Politique de confidentialité". If there is a better way to save about 6-8 characters in the bottom line of the dialog while keeping the basic information, please tell me :-) - If there's a better (more French) name for the installer application, tell me. I'd like to keep the format TFF-10.X.X-Langpack-[language]-vX so end users know it's a language package (and not the actual browser), which language, and which version(s) it's for.

Will the locale installer work on all future versions of 10.x? (See issue 42)

Posted on Mar 6, 2012 by Happy Bear

In principle, yes. The installer app, right now, requests to update to the latest minor version to make people use the most secure version. If this is inconvenient, I could change that and let it request 10.0.2, 10.0.3, 10.0.4, 10.0.5 etc. in advance (like extension makers used to do to pass the add-on check after a browser update).

Posted on Mar 7, 2012 by Massive Rhino

I think that would be best since it would diminish the amount of downloading people would need to do. Then we'll plan on getting it available publicly.

Posted on Mar 7, 2012 by Happy Bear

Okay. I changed the installer script to request 10.0.2 and up and dropped the old langpacks for TFF 4-9 (the official download version will be 10.0.3 and up as soon as TFF 10.0.3 final is out, and there will also be a French version).

Test version with new installer script. Please verify it installs on 10.0.2, but not on earlier versions.

Hello aquarius0101, great to have you on board. I'm sure we'll be able to sort out your problems. Can you upload what you have so far (the installer app or a jar or an xpi) so I can have a look at it? Also, I made a pdf with instructions on how to create the installer app (which includes the jar file) here: http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=42#c59 but I guess I'll have to update it a bit.

That looks pretty good already. I think you're almost there.

  • Installer script: Not all of the strings are polish, especially the ones the user gets to see when something goes wrong. If you need the German strings in English, let me know.
  • I'm not sure if we're allowed to use the official Firefox icon.

I'll look more closely at the jar later in the evening.

I know it. It is only a matter of time. I have translated only a couple of strings on;y for orientation. I can translate from German - Es is fur mich kein problem :) But if you can send mi an Englisch strings i can only say thx.

Icon is only temporary. When an national version will be ready i made some updtess in Resources :)

Content of the jar file is a pure version od FF 11.0 for Intel. I will be very thankfull for your opinion :)

Posted on Mar 21, 2012 by Happy Bear

What needs to be changed:

jar: - /branding/brand.dtd & brand.properties: Use TenFourFox instead of Firefox & Floodgap instead of Mozilla. trademarkInfo.part1 is empty between the "" marks (look at the German or French jars for an example, otherwise it will destroy the bottom part of the About dialog) - /browser/baseMenuOverlay.dtd: add „Check for updates…“ in Polish in the same place TFF has it, then the rest of the menu will work as well. And the tabs (cards), too (don't ask me why, I just tried it). File attached to save you some work. - /browser/aboutDialog.dtd: The FF-Intel file cannot be used (will give you an xul error when selecting „About Tenfourfox“ in the application menu). Just use the aboutDialog.dtd file from TFF and translate the strings directly in that file. - /mozapps/update/updates.dtd: There are some additional strings in the TFF update dialog for manual update. Edit the Intel file and translate&add these strings from the original TFF file.

Applescript: Version is only 11.0. If users try to use the 11.0 jar on, say, TFF 10.0.3, it won't work correctly. If you want to make a jar for 10.0.3 or later (which is what we need for the stable branch), build it from the corresponding FF version, or at least some 10.0.x version.

@Cameron: Any news on the attachment space? Can we keep uploading here, or should we use space elsewhere?

Thanks! This looks very good. I see no problem in the About dialog in TFF 11.

There's only one thing: You're using the same tarball for TFF 10 and 11. Please don't do that. There were GUI changes between 10 and 11. This means, one of them will have problems. I guess yout tarball is based on FF 11 because the Advanced and Privacy Preferences panes ares broken in TFF 10, this is one of the GUI changes I mentiond. You really must use a separate tarball for 10, there is no way around it. I had to learn that myself a year ago :-)

Thanks! The tarballs are perfect now. There is some bugfix necessary in the Installer application however:

  • Installer for TFF 11 says "TenFourFox 10" in the application menu (the plist file for the installer app is wrong).
  • There are some characters in the Installer app (and the applescript to begin with) not displaying correctly on both my 10.5.8 and 10.4.11 installations (see screenshot). I don't see this problem with German characters like ö or ü, and I'm not really sure how to fix this.

Indeed - in installer for TFF 11 plist file is corrected. I think that the problem with some character in installers dialogs is in wrong PL character coding in Lucida Grande font in German OS X - strange. In my instance of OS X 10.6 (every modyfications are made on 10.6.8 for now) and 10.5.8 all characters are displayed in good condition. I check it again on my OSX 10.5.8 on G5 tonight. Corrected installer for TFF 11 and TFF 10 in add - both instalers have the most up to date pl dictionaries.

My OS X installations are English. But anyway, this shouldn't happen because everything is Unicode. The Polish special characters in the localized TFF application display perfectly well. It's only the installer app that's messed up.

I think we need some help from an Applescript specialist to tell us how to specify the correct encoding.

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by Massive Bird

Back to france, back to TFF

The only way to archive the string issue is to use the built in apple script localization. In order to do that I need a file with correct character encoding for each string :

For exemple :

"OKLABEL" = "OK"; "INSTALLLABEL" = "Instaluj"; "ABORTLABEL" = "Anuluj";

etc.

After that, I will make modifications in the install script.

Posted on Mar 27, 2012 by Swift Kangaroo

I forgot that 10.5 don't use Unicode as default. First translations of installer I made in 10.5.8 but rest of work on 10.6.8 and I think that is the problem with polish characters in installer dialog boxes. If there is any list of strings in AppleScript I can made those translations to PL.

I uploaded French and German langpack installers for TFF 10.0.x. The Polish installer for 10.0.x will be ready as soon as the characters issue is fixed (comment 119).

Unless there is clear demand, I'd propose to only support the ESR based "general audience" versions with langpack installers and leave the beta versions in English, except for test versions posted here.

Victorien, can you modify the install script for TFF 10.0.x from comment 120 with the text from comment 126 so that unicode characters are displayed correctly, or give us a hint so that Aquarius or I can do it? I googled the issue a bit and I can't find a way to do it. If I paste the Polish characters into the script, they're displayed correctly on that computer after saving and re-opening or running the script, but not on any other computer, which I find completely unexplainable.

Otherwise I would have to edit the script in a way e.g. ł would be replaced with l, ą with a etc. because I'm not going to postpone the installers just because of that.

Posted on May 29, 2012 by Happy Bear

Uploaded Polish installer app with simplified characters. Note that this only affects the message dialogs in the installer app, most of which the user will see only once or never. The actual TFF localization has all źs and ęs etc. correct.

Posted on Sep 29, 2012 by Happy Bear

Found one rare bug for 17, but I'm not sure how to proceed. It affects people who install the German langpack, then decide to switch back to English. This is simply done by re-downloading the original TenFourFox application to replace the "germanized" one. The original TenFourFox, however, doesn't set general.useragent.locale to "en-US" in the user folder anymore at next re-start. Even though defaults/preferences/firefox-l10n.js/pref("general.useragent.locale", "en-US") is right in the application. I don't know why, TFF 10esr does this correctly. Right now, the user has to manually re-set "de" to "en-US", otherwise add-ons that support German will stay German. Any ideas?

Posted on Sep 29, 2012 by Happy Bear

OK, Mozilla moved firefox-l10n.js to a different sub-folder of "defaults" ("preferences" instead of "prefs") in 17. Adjusted the tarball structure accordingly. Fixed.

Knezzen, have a look at Issue 42 (for the locale) and here for the installer app. I'll post an updated detailed instructions pdf later today.

If you find this too complicated or technical, I can also give you a (short) list of TenFourFox-specific strings that need to be translated. Since there already is a Swedish Firefox, what we need to do here isn't that much of a translation job, but more a transplantation of the Swedish locale files into TenFourFox plus a Swedish version of the langpack installer.

Posted on Oct 16, 2012 by Happy Bear

Script Editor doesn't let you specify the encoding (at least I didn't find it), and if I open an applescript file in TextEdit with just one ł in it, it can't be saved as MacRoman anymore because these characters are probably not contained in the encoding. Unlike ä/ü etc. for German and Swedish, and that's the underlying problem; our scripts for the other languages are MacRoman. The Polish one is savable in Mac-Central European and Unicode, but none of them seem to be supported by AppleScript on 10.4. Unicode seems to be supported on 10.5 only.

I made a small error in the "Installer App" part of the translation.

The string: set installComplete to "Installationen av det Svenska språkpaketet till TenFourFox klar."

Should be: set installComplete to "Installationen av det Svenska språkpaketet till TenFourFox är klar."

Thanks for your contribution, knezzen. Your correction will be in the next version of the installer that'll be uploaded here (if no bugs are discovered) together with the other languages for final review before they go public.

I decided that a better solution of the problem with polish character encoding is prepare clear text in MacRoman without them. This will allow to prepare universal version of installer for all supported systems by TFF. The correct version below.

German installer for 17.0b2 (there was a change in b2 that broke the installer from comment 164). Plus Swedish installer with fix from comment 178. French (comment 164) and Polish (comment 180) can be used as-is for 17.0b2.

Here is the installer. And this is the text that should go on TFF main page: "TenFourFox parla la tua lingua.

Per installare il supporto alla lingua italiana in TenFourFox 17, scarica questo programma, decomprimilo e fai doppio click per iniziare."

Posted on Nov 1, 2012 by Quick Kangaroo

One thing about the dictionaries. I used Chris' instructions to localize TFF (message 59 of issue 42). I downloaded Firefox 3.6.28 to get the required files, but they weren't there. So I downloaded them from https://addons.mozilla.org/En-us/firefox/language-tools/ . The required files were named it_IT.aff and it_IT.dic. I renamed them into it.aff and it.dic for consistency with the other files in the installer. I hope this didn't break anything (as I said, everything seems to work fine so far).

Posted on Nov 1, 2012 by Happy Bear

Mclcmm, thank you! The installer looks very good to me.

Your dictionary works. There seems to be no consistent strategy at Mozilla where to place dictionaries, I discovered this myself when I made the Swedish installer (the Swedish Intel FF simply continues to ship it in the old FF 3.x place). Some languages package it with the browser, some stopped doing this with FF 4.x, and some expect you to download it as an add-on. I'll make note of this in the localization instructions.

About Dialog: If you like, you can shorten the strings at the bottom line ("Informazioni…") a bit to have the dialog's width not exceed the background picture, but this is just a cosmetic issue.

You are welcome!

If you are interested in making a multilanguage version of QuickTime Enabler, I can post an Italian translation of QTE warning messages and contextual menu items. It's a simple rtf file that could be used as reference by other translators.

Posted on Nov 5, 2012 by Massive Rhino

Let's not yet, because the QTE isn't really wired for localization yet and it's not feature-complete (I learned my lesson about that with Classilla).

For 17 final I'm making an experimental change in one of the strings (for the QTE, as it happens). It should not affect you guys any, because the keys are still the same, and your translation is accurate. If this looks good, we may execute a running change.

Posted on Nov 8, 2012 by Happy Bear

What string changed, or what key is affected?

Posted on Nov 8, 2012 by Massive Rhino

Since this message comes up invariably on H.264 HTML5 videos, which the QTE usually can play, I altered it:

diff --git a/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/global/videocontrols.dtd b/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/global/videocontrols.dtd --- a/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/global/videocontrols.dtd +++ b/toolkit/locales/en-US/chrome/global/videocontrols.dtd @@ -22,17 +22,17 @@

- +

Posted on Nov 8, 2012 by Happy Bear

If this stays in 17, the localizations should have it, too, otherwise localized users will still see the message that the video format isn't supported.

Cameron, as long as the QTE isn't localized, the context menu entry "Open Media in QuickTime" will stay English even if the browser is localized, right?

Knezzen, can you translate "To play, ensure QuickTime Enabler is installed, then right-click and select Open Media in QuickTime." to Swedish?

Aquarius & Mclcmm, if the change stays, can you adjust you installer apps accordingly, or just give me translations of that one sentence in your langage?

Posted on Nov 9, 2012 by Massive Rhino

Make it as short as you can, since we don't know how well a long string will do with a small video window. However, the English prompt seems to be okay on most. I don't consider this a showstopper if we can't do it in time, but if we can, great.

Thanks! The right-click command "Open Media in QuickTime" stays English until the QTE itself is localized, so I'll use Assurez-vous que QuickTime Enabler est installé, puis clic droit et "Open Media in QuickTime"

Aquarius, can you make it shorter? Just the information: 1) "You need QuickTime Enabler" or "Play this with QuickTime Enabler", and 2) Right-click and select "Open Media in QuickTime".

Also (and this will be the last thing for now :-) ) I need the plugin warning in French, Polish, Swedish and Italian for mozapps/extensions/extensions.dtd:

"Warning: TenFourFox does not support plugins and disables them by default."

Posted on Nov 9, 2012 by Helpful Cat

French "Attention : TenFourFox ne gère pas les plugins et les désactive par défaut."

Italian (to be checked by italian friends, to be absolutely sure... ;-) "Attenti: TenFourFox non supporta i plugins e gli disattiva per default." (they use a lot of english words for computer things, that's why there may be a slight difference, but if you don't have a better source, this will do ;-)

Posted on Nov 9, 2012 by Quick Kangaroo

The required translations are:

  • Assicurati che QuickTime Enabler sia installato, clicca col destro e scegli "Open Media in QuickTime"

  • Attenzione: TenFourFox non supporta i plugin e li disattiva per default.

If I wanted to correct these myself (and the reason is that I would also like to make a small correction in the About Dialog window), where exactly do I find the strings I should change? Are they the locale folder in the it.jar ?

Posted on Nov 9, 2012 by Quick Kangaroo

Ok, I think I got it. Here is the new installer. Chris, if you don't mind, would you update the localization instructions, please? There was no reference to the extensions.dtd file. I think it would be even better if we had a Wiki page dedicated to localization.

We need to finalize the locale installers -- I am building 10.0.11 right now, and starting tomorrow PM will start building 17.0 RC (Mozilla signed off on it this morning). If possible, we should have the finalized installers moved to the download section no later than tomorrow evening Pacific time. Comment #228

There's a typo in the install script that prevents installation of the langpacks for x.0.11 versions. All installer apps are affected because we were all using copy&paste… It's easily corrected ("10.0.11" instead of "10.0.11." in the version check routine), but we need to swap all of them. 10.0.11 is urgent, 17.0 can wait a bit.

I uploading the corrected versions for 10.0.x right now.

Well, the "your" particle can be translated as the informal "tu" or the formal "usted", or in this case would be "su".

That is:

Informal "TenFourFox habla tu idioma" Formal "TenFourFox habla su idioma"

I am latino, and we use more the informal form, it makes us feel more connected to people and more at home.

Also, 17.0.3 scheduled for February 19? That's my birthday bro! Thanks a lot!

Posted on Feb 2, 2013 by Happy Bear

Today I also received a Russian translation of our strings by email. The problem here, as with Polish, is the embarrassing non-support of Unicode or anything other than Mac-Roman of AppleScript under 10.4. Has anyone found a solution how to this? If not, the installer for Russion will have to stay English (the browser itself is not affected).

Posted on Feb 3, 2013 by Massive Rhino

Maybe transliterate it (i.e., Russian words, but in Roman characters)?

Posted on Feb 3, 2013 by Happy Bear

I think transliterating is very uncommon in Russia. I guess it would still be more graceful to leave the installer in English since Russians (especially people using the internet) usually speak English more than well enough to be able to install.

I once more tried to find a way to make the AppleScript Dialogs display Cyrillic characters, but no luck. It works in 10.5 (producing a nice UTF 16 file), but that's gibberish to AppleScript in 10.4. Inserting the Cyrillic using the AppleScript Editor in 10.4 produces the same gibberish as soon as you click Compile.

Posted on Feb 3, 2013 by Happy Bear

(and no, there's no support for Mac-Cyrillic in AppleScript at all…)

Posted on Feb 3, 2013 by Happy Bear

Russian installer app for TFF 17.0.2 an up. Installer app itself in English, see previous comments. Browser is completely Russian. Needs testing.

------For the website--------- TenFourFox speaks your language. TenFourFox говорит на Вашем языке.

To install %language% support in TenFourFox 17.0.x, download this installer, unzip it, and double click the installer to begin.

Для установки %russian% в TenFourFox 17.0.x, загрузите этот установщик, распакуйте его zip-архив, и дважды щелкните по установщику для начала.

Thanks to the people who maintain the Russian Firefox for including the dictionary files with the app. Saved me a lot of work.

Russian installer with "Project Lead" string in About dialog fixed. Otherweise no changes.

I guess we'll have to live with English for the installer script. Transliterating to Roman, besides being uncommon, is of no use to Russians who can only read Cyrillic; and Russians who can read Roman characters usually lerned them when learning English at school.

I think we're gaining momentum with translations. I received a Finnish translation of our custom strings by E-Mail today, so I made a Finnish langpack installer (17.0.3 and up). As always, it needs testing.

Note: There's no Finnish dictionary in this installer because… there is none. Not in the Intel FF, and not at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/language-tools/, so the English dictionary is kept instead. (Someone made a Finnish spellcheck Add-on, but it installs an x86 dylib and doesn't use the usual Firefox .dic format.) The spellchecker, even if it's enabled for all text fields, should have no function after installing this langpack, this is obviously the same behavior as the Finnish Firefox. If anyone has more information about this, please comment.

FF/TFF 21 uses a different way for localization. There's no .jar anymore, rather the folders and files which used to be contained in the .jar are now in the clear and uncompressed. And they're spread out over at least two places: MacOS/browser/chrome and MacOS/chrome, with two (!) separate manifests each for chome and the language (en-US, de, fr etc). Also, firefox-l10n.js was moved (again) to a different place (MacOS/browser/defaults/preferences)

So with lots of folders with the same name but in different paths, there's suddenly a lot more that can go wrong when transplanting files from FF-intel to TFF. It does save some workload in compressing/uncompressing and re-naming when making a localization. However, the install script in the Installer App may have to be rewritten to take account of this. My hopes are that we can still just copy over one tarball file and everything works itself out magically if we get all the new file paths correctly.

I will attempt to make a German Test Installer for 21, and issue test installers for the following major releases as well, so we can sort things out and fix bugs in the new method before the next ESR (24).

Posted on May 9, 2013 by Happy Bear

German test installer for 21. Except for the more complicated folder structure (and no jar/zipping in the end), not much has changed. No need to change the installer script – it still uncompresses the tarball file and adds/replaces everything where it's supposed to go. Relief.

It seems to work okay, but please test the installer app since I may have overlooked something.

Looks very good, thanks! Why did you add the extra folder, i.e. what doesn't work when it's not there? (Not that it does any harm, though.) Would be good to know in case I missed something (which is entirely possible).

It's for the translation of print services from the "File" menu, for example (page setup, print ...) Thanks to you for your excellent work

Posted on Oct 20, 2013 by Massive Rhino

Legally it doesn't change things very much, but it would be nice to have it consistent as a polish issue. It's shippable as is if it will be troublesome, though.

I get print services in the File menu and the dialogs they invoke in the correct language (German, Italian, French) even without this folder present, but maybe it depends on system/printer setup?

The copyright date can be changed very easily, no problem.

Finnish langpack installer for 24. Please test.

Russian, Spanish and Swedish native speakers please have a look at http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=42#c140 – I need some new lines translated for the 24 installer. Without these lines – no installer.

Are the contributers for Polish and Asturian still around?

As with previous releases, this time I will also made a Polish translation for TFF 24 but I need a little more time because of my work duties. Maybe this weekend I can upload something interesting :)

Posted on Oct 27, 2013 by Massive Rhino

For simplicity, let's also upload these to Google Code when ready, since we still have some cap space leftover. We'll move the localizations over to SourceForge for TenFourFox.stable.next.

Posted on Nov 2, 2013 by Happy Bear

Version numbering changes with 24, see http://tenfourfox.blogspot.de/2013/10/17010-available-for-last-time.html (comments). We could just add all possible versions to the whitelist (24.1, 24.1.1, 24.1.2, 24.2, 24.2.1, 24.2.2, which would allow for two additional chemspill releases each), or do a more general approach (24.* if this works?) Any ideas?

I'll fix the version check routine accordingly in the installers that are done already before I upload them to Google Code.

Posted on Nov 2, 2013 by Happy Bear

Grafiko…, you forgot the new strings in plugins.dtd "TenFourFox does not support plugins for this content." "More information (in English)…" Can you give me the French for that? I'll add it myself before I upload the installer. Sorry, I missed this when I tested the installer the first time.

Posted on Nov 2, 2013 by Massive Rhino

I think making them 24.* is the best option. I don't intend to make any UI or string changes for stable.

Posted on Nov 2, 2013 by Happy Bear

Hm, the asterisk doesn't work with this Applescript method. I'll just make a long whitelist. Not very elegant, but it'll work.

Posted on Nov 3, 2013 by Massive Giraffe

Whoops! Sorry for forgetting ... I corrected the archive I sent you away. If you prefer to fix the file plugins.dtd I give you the translation of two lines: "TenFourFox does not support plugins for this content." "TenFourFox ne supporte pas les plug-ins pour ce contenu." and "More information (in English)…" "En savoir plus (En anglais)…"

Russian installer for 24.x. The applescript inability to correctly display non-Roman characters remains, so the installer itself is English, as we did in 17. Preferences/Privacy/tracking is English, but this is also in the Russian Intel FF, so we'll leave it at that. They probably didn't bother anymore to translate it.

The applescript in this installer contains the new list of versions we support, reflecting the new version numbering. It's a long list, and the solution is not elegant, but it should work. Please test. For Polish and Asturian installers: When you make them, please use this version list and name your installer 24.x (not 24.0.x). I will change all installers already made accordingly.

Cameron, did you disable the "Preferences/Advanced/Data Choices" tab (=telemetry)?

Yes, I turned it off. Mozilla would likely just ignore our data, being tier-3, and it doesn't work quite right on 10.4 anyway.

Asturian: mikelg...@softastur.org, can you do it? Finnish: done French: done German: done Italian: done Polish: assigned to aquarius...@gmail.com Russian: done Spanish: I need only three lines translated by a native speaker to make the installer, see http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=42#c140 . carlos...@gmail.com, can you do it? Swedish: dito, see http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/issues/detail?id=42#c140 . knez...@gmail.com, can you do it?

We're about a week away from building 24.2.0 final. So let's go ahead and upload what we've got, preferably by Friday, so I can get the links into the new web page.

Posted on Nov 27, 2013 by Happy Bear

Alright, uploaded German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian and Finnish, so the great majority of international users is covered. I guess we can add Polish when it's ready. Haven't heard anything about Asturian and Swedish though, sadly. I could even make them myself, I only need the few new strings translated. Maybe this will work out over time as people migrate to 24.

Sorry for my late. In a few days I'll try to prepare the Polish version of the installer. Are there any problems during the preparing of the Polish translation of intel FF on which I need to consider ?

aquarius0101, no worries, but if possible if you could submit it by the end of December that will still allow us to upload it to Google Code before they close new downloads (I intend to drain every bit of bandwidth from them ;).

Thanks. I corrected a few minor things: the branding (full brand name is also just TenFourFox, see en-US). Also widened the Preferences dialog 2em so the buttons at Privacy aren't cut off, and set firefox-l10n.js to pl (we still need this to switch to another language or back to English, or else the addon locale will be confused). Otherwise it's okay, so I uploaded it to Google Code.

Can You tell me where can i change default width of dialog boxes ? I don't digged so precisely trough resources of FF/TFF and it is worth to know it. Previously, I have shorten descriptions of the key labels, but it was not a good solution. Sorry for the rest of the bugs. Next time I'll do it precisely as I fix my PB G4 because at Rozetta TFF is very unstable and its difficult to work on a translation with a virtual intelmac :)

Posted on Dec 16, 2013 by Happy Bear

No problem. My first try on a 24.x installer had a lot more bugs, but I've done so many of them now I know most of the stuff by heart.

Dialog width is set in browser/chrome/[language]/locale/browser/preferences/preferences.dtd. Intel Firefox presets should be okay actually for each localization, however they tend to forget finetuning sometimes when content changes. So the cut-off buttons are probably in the Polish Intel FF, but why not correct it if we can do it so easily. I discovered this only a few weeks ago, I used to shorten strings as well.

What did you fix for about:support? I do see the error, but only in the French localization, not in other languages (adding to test list…). Thanks for fixing this.

Oh, and: What do you mean by "Status Bar"? We don't have a status bar anymore.

Cameron, sorry, we will need to swap the French installer.

The Bookmarks/History library window is broken in localized versions. It's there, but it shows no contents. I'm looking into it, but I have no idea how to fix this.

Posted on Jun 20, 2014 by Happy Bear

Found the solution. Localized versions for whatever reason are missing in browser/chrome/[language]/locale/browser/browser.dtd. Look in 31 en-US for the correct line to insert it; translations are in 24.

This File Menu entry in is not shown for the main window. Either Intel-31 does this differently, or the localizations over there are also broken right now.

Posted on Jun 20, 2014 by Massive Rhino

Sorry, I should have warned you. I took bug 1008793 on our trunk since it was supposed to land on 31 and didn't in time, but is a Mac-specific bug.

Posted on Jun 20, 2014 by Happy Bear

No problem. Can we just use my solution for 31 and re-insert the line in the localization file? Does it have any negative effect? I've been using the fixed German version all day and it looks fine. If I understand the bug correctly, from 32 on this won't be necessary because Open Location will be officially in the menu again, right?

Posted on Jun 20, 2014 by Massive Rhino

Yes, your solution should work fine. It will not be needed in Fx32+ (though given all the problems with 31 one wonders if this is where we part ways, but that's another discussion for the blog).
