On pages such as http://melange-dev.appspot.com/club_admin/create, the pager says "1-10", and there is a next button. Perhaps it could me more clear that there are more items by saying something like "1-10 out of 13": see the bottom of the melange issue tracker (http://code.google.com/p/soc/issues/list)

We don't know how many items there are in total due to GAE limitations :).

Those don't work on queries do they? E.g., if I want to know how many notifications there are for a user, we do a filtering query, Sharding Counters do not solve that, right?

nope it doesn't work on queries they way you would like it to work, each sharding counters would have different model.
