I have same issue, but in addition many a time, when I switch on Bluetooth, the WiFi connection drops.

Thanks... but that is not the same issue... I can leave wifi on all the time and it will never drop connection. Even when screen blanks out. The wifi will only drop when I turn on bluetooth.
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #5
The issue with bluetooth killing wifi is a known Android 4.2.1 issue. Whether or not it is related to other wifi issues has yet to be determined, since the cause of the wifi bug has not been made public. I have also seen the bluetooth killing wifi bug on My Nexus 4, all I have to do is turn on my paired Plantronics headset.
And for clarity, my wifi doesn't "drop" either. But after the screen has been blanked for about a minute, it stops communicating. A simple ping test to your N4 can verify this. If you turn the screen back on you still see the wifi icon, but it will be greyed out. After a few seconds with the screen on, it will turn blue again (and ping will again reach your device).

Yeah, I had a discussion with a level 2 Google Play support rep. They said they are aware of the issue and to please be patient for an update. I think we need to make this more publicly known so that they get on top of it...
My wifi icon is always blue (when bluetooth isn't on, that is)... even after the screen's been off for quite some time and then turn back on. Still blue...

[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #7
Thanks for the update. How did you get to discuss this with a level 2 rep? Did you call Google Device support and escalate?
ry...@themmteam.com <ry...@themmteam.com> #8
After a long discussion of "It must be your router..." or "It must be your bluetooth device..." or "you must have installed some app that's causing that..." or "those radios have nothing to do with each other..." I proved to the first rep that my router + bluetooth device doesn't have any problems on my Nexus 7. Then explained that I can get the same results on both Nexus 4 (dropped wifi) and Nexus 7 (perfectly working wifi) at multiple router locations - not just mine. I then proceeded to uninstall every downloadable app... still the same problem... I then reset my phone to factory settings... still the same problem... then I booted my phone in safe mode... still the same problem. She was stumped... it was clearly a Nexus 4 issue as no outside force was causing this issue.
It took all that running around to present my case to a level two. And of course... level two knew about it and said be patient...

Figures. I've done essentially the same thing trying to track down the wifi sleeping problem. I've RMA'd two Nexus 4's, and the third one has the identical problem as the other two. It's about time for me to call them back again.
ry...@themmteam.com <ry...@themmteam.com> #10
Level one said I could do a warranty replacement, but if they don't find my issue, they would charge me full price for the new Nexus. Didn't want to risk it... Just send the update!!!
[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #11
Interesting! The reps gave me no problems whatever when I described the problem, said they'd RMA the phone each of the two times I called and described the problem. In a subsequent follow-up email one of the reps said they'd never heard of the problem, so I sent them my write up (above) as well as this link: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I told them they could read all about it there.

@16, agree this is unacceptable, especially since Google has finally acknowledged that Android 4.2.1 is the source of the wifi and bluetooth problems, not the Nexus 4 hardware. See this blog post for details: http://things-linux.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-natives-are-getting-restless.html

jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #22
+1 from me. As soon a phone calk starts over Bluetooth the WiFi connection dies. If I do a VoIP call over WiFi with a BT headset, the call will die because the WiFi connection dies. This is unacceptable for a flagship phone in 2013.

Pretty amazing that this device was released in NOVEMBER and such a bug was not discovered before release or fixed 4 months later.
This is basic QC testing of such devices. They might have used such a cheap BT/WIfi chip to cut costs that it might be impossible to fix.
That's LG quality for you.
I went back to the Note II because i can't work without BT and WiFi for my voice calls.

Same here. Pretty useless when used wifi+bluetooth. I am connected through slimport to my TV and BT mouse and keyboard that seems to be working fine but WiFi keeps dropping connection, it just disconnects and does not even see any networks and the, after some time, reconnects. So even a try to watch youTube over wifi while having any BT devices connected is not possible. This needs fix it sucks like this! And we need option to shutoff screen while HDMI connected ... Come on google developers you are working for 100k salary make this happen and fix it.

I have the same issue. But just occasionally. I have the impression that the wifi keeps connected when it's under "heavier" use (e.g. pings from a computer). But if it disconnects from wifi i'm able to reconnect it with just entering the wifi settings screen.

I also have the same problem. Very annoying especially when I am making a call with my Bluetooth headset with wifi killed temporarily, my Nexus 4 keeps trying to reconnect to the wifi and directly makes interruptions to my conversation. I can still bear if there is no wifi when I am making calls with my Bluetooth headset but really cannot tolerate this bug disturbing my conversations. I do not have this issue when I use my Galaxy Nexus with the same Android 4.2.2 version. So I really doubt it is the problem of LG. Hope Google can fix it ASAP.

[Deleted User] <[Deleted User]> #42
For whatever reason, Google has been incapable of fixing this problem, and they certainly do not show any concern over it. I've decided to move my Nexus 4 over to CynaogneMod, where they at least have a viable, working bug reporting system and a developer team that is hard-working and who provides feedback to their users. It's not for everyone, because it entails unlocking your phone, rooting it, and flashing a new OS onto it. But as I said, the CM folks at least have a viable bug tracking system.

I'm getting the same issue. Bought my Nexus 4 last week and have JB 4.2.2. Bluetooth and WiFi work fine independent of each other. But, they don't seem to play nice together. For me, the problem arises when I try to stream music to my Bose BT speaker. While on WiFi, the connection will go in and out, making it unusable. To be clear, I don't encounter any problems using BT without WiFi. That is, I'm able to steam music via HSPA+ to the speaker without issue. It's only once I turn on WiFi that the connection problems occur.

I'm also noticing that the Nexus 4 BT doesn't always remember previously paired devices. Sometimes, I'll have to re-initiate the pairing process which can be annoying. I've had this occur on two different speakers. This is leading me to believe the Nexus 4 may have a faulty BT, although don't know if this is a hardware or software problem. Either way, it is ridiculous that we have not heard anything about it. I have to toggle my WiFi off when I want to stream music, which I can do because I have an unlimited mobile data plan, but I have to think this would be a dealbreaker to many other users.

This issue is driving me crazy. I have been using the Nexus 4 since January, and even two android upgrades couldn't fix this bug. It is so annoying to toggle between wifi and bluetooth. To add to the woes off late the 2 finger swipe doesn't respond. This is an intermittent behavior and I have to reboot my mobile to reset this feature.
I am almost embarrassed that I recommended this phone to my friends.
I knew I was compromising on battery life and other hardware issues when I bought the phone but such a shoddy software job by Google is unacceptable.

Same issue on the Nexus 4 I received today paired with a BT250-XT+. Stock 4.2.2. It's an issue in that it prevents me from using Google Voice via Internet and use the headset. It's the curse of living on the edge of cell service, I must have the phone in a cradle in order to have cell service inside the house.
So my two choices are:
1) Turn Wireless off / Bluetooth on/ have phone in cradle. This is how I have always been even with the prior cellular service provider.
2) Turn Wireless on / Bluetooth off / hold phone in hand. I can still get/receive calls to my cell via Google voice / Allows me to roam the house on wireless. Pain in the neck (no pun intended) if I intend to be on the computer while talking.
I must say Google, I may have to hold off chanting praise in your direction until you resolve what is a (simple) core item. Wifi and Bluetooth are fairly mature features.

Gordon, you're right, it is a bug report. And I'd be delighted to stop writing about it when
1) Google acknowledges this bug and stops telling people who call in to the device support line that it is a feature, and
2) we get some feedback from the Google devs about what the problem is that is causing this bug behavior and when it will be fixed. You, apparently being a dev yourself, wouldn't have any insights into this, would you?
Until then, I'm afraid that all I can do is to offer you is this friendly little reading tip: don't click on the links to my blog entries if you don't want to read them. Twelve so far, you say? Impressive (that you would count them).

BTW, it recently came to light, to me, anyhow, that this bug only manifests itself when the N4 is using a 2.4 GHz wifi access point, and not when you are using a 5 GHz one. That sort of screams BLUTOOTH DRIVER BUG to me.
Not, apparently, that anybody on the Google/Qualcomm/dev side of the issue seems to care enough about to investigate, or acknowledge, even.

I've been following this thread for some time now, and quietly waiting to hear more information about possible fixes.
I first ran into this issue using a VOIP and my bluetooth headset. It seems that occasionally, I would stop hearing the person talk and they would stop hearing me talk. After some time (say 4 to 10 seconds), the past 4 to 10 seconds would play back rapidly (like chipmunks talking). Occassionally, it would drop the wifi connection and I'd have to dial back.
My point about this comment is: if there's anyway I can help provide debug information or ideally any logs, let me know.

My point about this comment is: if there's anyway I can help provide debug information or ideally any logs, let me know.

Re: #97. I have a dual-channel AP: when connected to the 2.4GHz radio I see this bug, but when connected to the 5GHz radio I do not see this bug.
Bluetooth is supposed to adaptively modify the channels on which it operates (using AFH) so that it avoids frequencies in use or suffering from interference. My guess is that this feature is not working, and so Bluetooth and WiFi are trampling all over each other in the 2.4GHz range. Could be a hardware/firmware issue or a driver issue IMO.

Re: #99
That sounds like it makes sense. It would also explain the somewhat sporadic nature of it. I sometimes get it on a few different APs (2.4Ghz only), though I've not yet worked out what's the common factor. It could be related to the wifi channel in use, or potentially interference from other nearby wifi APs, even if you aren't connected to them. If that is the issue, that would make it more difficult to tie down, given how saturated the wifi spectrum is in many areas.

Same bug occurs on my end. It is extremely dissapointing because I bought Slimport cable to use my Nexus 4 as a PC (something like Asus Padphone) and while I can use my bluetooth keyboard and mouse I can't use wifi which kind of ruins the whole idea. Why bother adding a Slimport module in a first place?

Well done Google.
Been following these threads (there are about 30 on this bug tracker, tracking similar BT issues) for about 8 weeks now and I keep seeing the same trends:
Google won't take responsibility for the fault. One developer implies it will be fixed in Key Lime Pie.
Now, I would happily wait 6 months for that to happen, perhaps even plumping for an N5, but judging by Googles complete inability to recognise, communicate and fix the issue, I've just ordered a Galaxy S3 for £20 more than an N4. Google have simply failed to instil faith in their competence at fixing this and this is seen among other users on these threads.
So congratulations Google. Your incompetence is now not only losing existing customers, but also potential new ones. Which is a shame because the N4 seems like a great piece of kit, save for this one minor bug (I played on a friends N4).
I'll be unsubscribing from all trackers soon. Come Thursday, I just won't give a shit about the Nexus as a brand anymore.
For reference, I have borrowed an old HTC Wildfire (after my Nokia E5 gave up) and now want to give the phone back and get something a bit quicker. N4 was in the spotlight, but now I've voted with my wallet. 8 weeks is frankly, long enough and in fact, this issue has gone on MUCH longer than this.
I'm not advocating others jump the Nexus ship. Google may well get their act together. But for me personally, I'll be moving into a job role soon where reliability of features on a phone is more important than anything else.

I've been having this issue (and a myriad other bluetooth ones) since I got 2 Nexus 4's in December. My recommendation to my friends has been to get the Nexus 4 only if they don't need BT.
It's disappointing that Google doesn't seem too keen to communicate when or if they plan to fix the issue. My next phone will not be a Nexus. I value working features over broken ones with the promise of future updates.

The problem has everything to do with the Wifi and BT sharing the same 2.4Ghz Frequencies. I have a Nexus 7 and Nexus 4 and Bluetooth will NOT WORK unless I use the 5Ghz WiFi Connection. I have a Netgear WNDR3700v2 Dual 2.4/5Ghz Router at home and verified this. However, it sucks when I am at work all day because I primarily use VOIP and Google Calls and Skype and can't use my BT headset. Maybe Google just can't fix it because of the design...

Anyway, I'd like to point out that you don't need to connect a device - merely turning on Bluetooth for a few seconds at a stretch when WiFi is connected (even if you don't have a device paired) results in the same problem.

Same problem here, it is extremely annoying. My wifi drops and reconnects every 30 seconds or so when bluetooth is connected and in use. Its pretty simple. Not only the nexus has this problem. My note 2 and htc one x have the same problem. The big problem is that wifi and bluetooth are transmitted and received by the same hardware. For some reason the bluetooth and wifi together isdisrupting eachother badly making the wifi to drop totally. I dont think there is a fix for this... except for making different hardware for both wifi and bluetooth. Devices get smaller and smaller so to preserve space stupid choices are made often.. its to bad... but i think we have to live with them.

I seem to have had this issue as well. But only occasionally and only seems to be when streaming video over WiFi. Using just 2.4Ghz band (on BT Home Hub 3). I've been able to stream music (eg. Google Play Music) and listen using my Bluetooth headset and browse web pages over WiFi without issue.
With an active Bluetooth connection I have not noticed the WiFi signal drop - the icon has remained blue and active. Although the WiFi icon has often been hidden when watching full screen video.
However, trying to stream video (eg. watching live TV with TVCatchup or BBC iPlayer) and the audio/video would stutter until it would eventually freeze entirely. Turning off the Bluetooth headset resolves the audio and video playback.
HOWEVER, it is currently (and rather suddenly) working perfectly! (I'm watching TVCatchup and listening on my Bluetooth headset). Earlier this evening it didn't work and I have changed nothing. There are often neighbouring WiFi networks that are barely in range - could this be an issue?!

The issue only arises when actively using both WiFi and Bluetooth, so, for example, listening to play music with Bluetooth without issues probably just means it already had it in its temporary cache. It caches alot on its own, not just when you explicitly tell it. Loading a page while using a browser is the only time that it may be interrupted when browsing. As long as it isn't extended use, like watching a YouTube video in the browser app, you shouldn't have the issue. TV catch up may buffer quickly or something, or it let's you grab the whole episode to your device. No idea. Being in USofA, can't test that part. Really wish the problem will see a fix in the next month or 2 via 4.3/5.0/etc., whatever they'll call it. Its hurting massive markets by affecting huge flagships. Here's hoping...

This is so lame.
How long has it been since Nexus 4 has been released? Like ... 8 months or something? And how long since this bug has been reported here? Six months... ? And there is still no at least remotely official response from Google at all? Are you kidding me? What kind of joke is that?
From now on, Google, please put a large sticker over all you Nexus stuff that says: "This device can not handle simultaneous wifi and blootooth connections!" It is completely ridiculous that you are selling these phones/tablets/etc/... while knowing that there is this serious issue and intentionally hiding that from your customers! I would not be surprised if you will face a large lawsuit for that.
Google has repeatedly proven that it absolutely does not care about its customers. Its managers are apparently only interested in selling their stuff, forcing people to use their services and filling every application with their ads. Some bletooth/wifi compatibility, however critical it might be, is apparently on the absolute end of their priority list. What a shame.

I have the sam issue. If I want to listen to youtube trough my bluetooth hi-fi system the wifi drops out. But if I use only music that is on my nexus 7 the bluetooth works fine but I can not use any browser or the internet while I am using the bluetooth. This is the first time I use the bluetooth as an audio source and I just bought a bluetooth speaker and it fails very disappointing. I think it is wearied it is conflicting on the same frequency because they should have tested bluetooth and wifi at the same time when they where quality controlling these units if this was a hardware problem. But if it is a software problem google would have fixed the problem by now because it has been a problem for a very long time so it has to be an hardware issue on the 2.4ghz band. That band is what 90% of all wirreless users are using so this is a major issue. Please fix this problem google.

I have tried it with my samsung ace and the same issue. I can not use the phone to stream music from the internet to my bluetooth speaker. This is still very much an issue with my Nexus 10 on 4.3. I did a complete factory reset before upgrading to 4.3 to start from a clean slate. This issue can be easily reproduced and demonstrated with the speedtest.net app. I have an 18mbps AT&T Uverse connection at home and with bluetooth turned off, the app displays me as getting almost the full 18mbps. As soon as I flip bluetooth on from the right dropdown shade and rerun the test, my download and upload speeds drop anywhere from 80-95%, IF the test is even able to finish, as most of the time the app says the network connection timed out due to the bluetooth interference.
Having to buy a 5Ghz router is NOT a viable solution to an issue that is only inherent to these Google devices.

motorola razr i and samsung s2 have the same problem. When this feature is fixed google?
sr...@gmail.com <sr...@gmail.com> #171
Seriously, come on Google. This is getting ridiculous. This thread was started more than SEVEN months ago. Still no resolution to such a simple functionality. Out of the many devices I've ever owned in the past, NONE have ever had an issue with using WiFi and bluetooth simultaneously.
There are MANY reasons I'd like to see this remedied: I'd like to be able to use my bluetooth keyboard at my desk to surf the web with my tablet, I'd like to use my bluetooth headset for VoIP communications and I'd like to be able to play games online with my bluetooth Moga Pro controller. All of these features are rendered almost entirely USELESS due to this bug.
4.2.2 did not fix this flaw, nor did 4.3. Quite frankly, mine, as well as MANY others patience is growing thin at this point due in part to either Google's ineptitude and/or indifference on this matter. I'm beginning to regret my decision to switch my phone/tablet combo from iPhone/iPad to Nexus devices, as the former NEVER had an issue with such a basic functionality.
This needs to be fixed pronto, preferably in a hotfix that can be pushed out ASAP. IF this is ever fixed and IF it is not released until Key Lime Pie, it will be too late, as I will have switched back to the Apple ecosystem by that point out of sheer frustration. I used to sing the praises of your company's devices when I first made the switch and, as a result, influenced MANY other people to make the switch as well to your product line through good word-of-mouth in-person, through blogs and through social media. If this is not handled soon, I will go out of my way to reverse that trend by a factor of 100 and start the kindling for an out-of-control wildfire of steering people away from your products due to your inability to provide a device that is even capable of such BASIC, core functionalities and your disregard for fixing your flawed product once you have our money. I would strongly advise others to follow suite.
We have been more than patient regarding this matter, and our collective frustration is growing to a fever pitch at this point. I will hold out a little longer to give you guys one final opportunity to right this wrong, or I'm done for good.

THANK YOU!!! I have UVerse/2Wire - picked up a TTL-WR740N router (dd-wrt compatible) from Amazon for 19.99 - arrived next day - all working :)
Finally I can use my N4 with BT headset to stream MediaMonkey library via UPnP/DLNA without the constant disconnects!!!
good luck to all
Buy a $20 router that doesn't interfere with your $350 Nexus 4 at home - you'll be happy you did... who cares about this bug?! Do you own any high-tech equipment that doesn't have a bug? At least this is an easy fix and you get a new router to boot!

sr...@gmail.com <sr...@gmail.com> #174
Absolutely not! I refuse to spend a single penny more to fix an issue that is only inherent in my Nexus devices. It doesn't matter if it's only $20 more, it is the principle of the matter. I've already paid $500 for a Nexus 10, $250 for a Nexus 7 and $350 for a Nexus 4 ALL of which have the same bug of bluetooth causing extreme interference with WiFi speeds. In my house, I also have three laptops, a desktop PC, an iPhone, an iPad and a Playstation 3 - all of which have wireless and bluetooth capabilities. NONE of them have this issue, only my Nexus devices. In fact, everything else works splendidly on my home network. Why should I pay more to fix a problem that is only exhibited by Google's devices? Why can they not fix this issue?
Besides that, it's not just my home network they have this issue with, it's ANY wireless network I put them on. I have tried many other networks and am able to replicate this problem time and time again on all of them.

I commented above (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=41631#c125 ) that I have experienced the same problem in the past with a bluetooth headset connected, however, it has been OK for a while now without any hardware or notable software changes. It was working OK for me on both 4.2.2 and now 4.3 with my Nexus 4.
HOWEVER, prompted by comments above, I have checked my network (via WiFi) speed with BT-off and BT-on - with a BT headset connected - and have noticed that my network speed appears to drop by half with BT-on!? From 20Mbps (with BT-off) to 10Mpbs (with BT-on) download. The upload speed seems to be largely unaffected. 10Mbps is obviously still OK and my system "works", but I thought it was interesting to note that whilst my system works, I do still have symptoms.
Just to clarify, the above test is with BT-on AND a BT device is connect (a headset in my case). Simply with BT-on and no BT device connected I do not appear to suffer any drop in network speed.

Speed issue with Wifi+Bt running simultaneously is not a bug.
I can see the same behaviour on all PC i get.
Most of times, the same chip is used for wifi and bluetooth, there is often only one antenna for both and they are also operating on the same channels (~2,4Ghz), so reduced throughput is normal.
You can have better results on PC, if you put a 5Ghz wifi card, operating with a 2,4Ghz separate Blutooth card/stick. Each having is owns antennas.

My Nexus 4 is now on 4.3
The problem is still the same and very repeatable.
I'm connected to a wifi router, have a full connection (-40dBm, ch. 11) I'm also connected to my car's Bluetooth for both phone and media.
I can play music via Bluetooth (while maintaining a full connection, I can watch Youtube video's, play Google Music...).
When I get a call (or make a call) the wifi connection immediately drops to almost nothing and after a second or 2 is completely disconnected.
Other devices are still connected with a full connection.
Doing a scan on the phone shows NO wifi signals while the other devices do.
This has to get fixed, I can't believe no-one at Google has this kind of setup.
I'm gonna try forcing my wifi router to some other channels to see if that helps but it should not be a problem.

It really is a channel conflict, when I force my wifi router to channel 13 (the max on that little 3G router) when connected just to bluetooth I still have a very good wifi connection when not on a call (playing music is also still fine)
When I do get a call the connection becomes very erratic going from max to almost nothing and occasionally disconnecting but then reconnecting again after a few seconds and showing full connection again for a few seconds.
I wish that little router would go up to channel 14 as it seems that that is where bluetooth cellphone audio is no longer interfering.

It would be very funny if CyanogenMod/Linux developers would fix this problem before Google team does.

bottom line: :
probably every android device which has problem with wifi and bluetooth interoperability has Bluetooth driver lacking BTCOEX support . Linux/Android Kernel currently has no mechanism to peacefully share the frequencies.(information to verify)

if this implemented? right now we have some devices working, some not working -
!!! question: how to check for BTCOEX support in the driver we use?

#197 this seems correct, it is a core android/linux issue.
On my galaxy S3 it wasnt actually related to the power saving feature. But what works is if you reboot your device with wifi and bluetooth enabled already. During bootup, the negotiation takes place somehow. On the contrary, if you happen to enable bluetooth while the device is already running your are likely getting some problems.
So i have rebooted with bluetooth and wifi enabled and i leave both constantly enabled to avoid problems.

The bluetooth-gets-stomped-by-wifi problems seems to depend on the BT device too. From all that I've read over the months plus other relevant research I now think the problem is a poorly designed Qualcomm powered wireless chipset that isn't fully compatible with industry standards. Anyone with an atheros powered laptop knows what I mean. Google tried to do their best for us but who do you blame when a company like Qualcomm drops the ball? Broadcom and Intel have the best wireless chips now and I use them exclusively going forward with all tech purchases.

Did the update on my nexus 4 3 weeks ago to 4.4.2. Immediatly i noticed that my car would lose it's bluetooth connection with the phone after a couple of minutes. I noticed that BT was turned of in the settings and that i couldn't turn it back on again, ony after a reboot.
After reboot BT was back on again (didn't need to change the status in the settings) and the car had connection again. After 1 minute or so the same thing happened again...
Did some research on the net and found out that it could be intereferance with BT and WiFi.
Tested this:
When WiFi on the phone is turned of, the BT works fine, no connection los
When WiFi is turned on, BT failure.
Yesterday I had the same interferrence, but this time it was the WiFi that stopped working. BT was perfectly OK in the car, but WiFi-Status says on, but could not see any networks or connect to one. Wanted to try to shut it of (the WiFi), this wasn't possible.
Only reboot resolved the problem.
Searching the net I saw that a lot of people are having the same issues! I hope Google is trying to fix this!

Hi,
I am sorry to disappoint, but you can see it for yourself: Google does not
give a damn about this anymore. If this is a software issue, they are fine
with it as it is now. If it is a hardware issue, they do not care either.
They have introduced Nexus 5 more than a year after these issues started to
emerge and still, if you look it up in this thread, there are people
complaining about it not being resolved. And it will never be. My humble
opinion only.
Maybe in 2020 they will finally start resolving it but by that time there
might be no Bluetooth anyway, so... :-)
Just forget it.

See comment #197 for a link to the kernel wiki page on coexistence. If it were the hardware not supporting coexistence at all, why are some people reporting that the problematic devices work for them, given particular firmwares? It seems more likely that it's a driver problem or a failure to properly set some kernel parameter for the driver.
From the wiki, bluetooth adaptive freq-hopping can completely disable bluetooth in noisy environments; perhaps that's part of what's happening, for some people at least.
The suggestion by LG that the only way to do this is to have different antennae for BT and wifi seems unlikely to me. Would any EE professionals like to comment on whether such an embedded, relatively unshielded system could possibly tx/rx on two different frequencies in the 2.4ghz band simultaneously, even given their own amps and antennae, without completely obliterating each other's signals? I was under the impression that wifi and bt coexistence operated purely by time-sharing the amp and antenna.

I've just bought a bluetooth headphones, the sound amazing, but as soon as I reach home and turn on the wifi the sound started to lag and the wifi to have issues, after looking all over the internet and multiples forums I found that the issue is the frequency of the bluetooth and the wifi. Both works on 2.5GHz (on average) so if both connections are working at the same time they will get interference.
Posible Solution (I've not tried yet):
You can set the wifi to work on 5GHz but obviously your wifi at home (or work) must be on that frequency.
Let me know if this solution works.
BTW: I have a Nexus 4, and I've never had problems with the Wifi

@#228 :
I was able to resolve the problem by setting 2.4Ghz only on my Wi-Fi settings on one of my Nexus 4, but i still don't understand why it worked, as it seems to contradict every clues i found until now.
On another hand, i have another Nexus 4, just working fine with Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi at the same time, no problem with 3G/4G either.
And i also have a third Nexus, that has the same problem as described in this thread, and still didn't found any fix.
This just doesn't make any sense !
(All these Nexus are running on the same last 4.4.2 official version for nexus 4)
For now, that's how i see the problem :
- Android 4 implements Bluetooth LE (or Smart), which rely on a 2.4Ghz frequency and can't share it's antenna with Wi-Fi (unlike classic Bluetooth). That's why a 5Ghz access point is required. As it was conceived in 2011/2012, both the Nexus 4 and 7 couldn't see this problem coming.
- Indeed, the Nexus 4 has a single antenna.
The following is purely hypothetical :
Google won't fix the problem, so they called LG. LG called their hardware furnisher who probably don't mind about the problem, and then answered LG to put 2 antennas on their upcoming Nexus 5.
The problem won't be fixed for the Nexus 4.
Am i right or totally wrong ?

In reply to comment #229 , every version of Bluetooth, from the original 1.0 spec through the latest 4.1 with Low Energy, uses the 2.4-GHz ISM radio band. The addition of support for Bluetooth LE in newer Android versions does not change the fundamental problem that the Wi-Fi drivers in the kernel do not support Bluetooth Coexistence mode, so any use of the single 2.4-GHz antenna for Bluetooth will disrupt the Wi-Fi link. If the disruption is bad/long enough, the Wi-Fi association may be lost.

I believe the issue isn't Android. It may be the fact that Wifi and bluetooth both operate on the 2.4GHz range, and since bluetooth has Adaptive frequency hopping, it's hard to control what frequency Bluetooth is on. Setting your WiFi to use 5GHz only will resolve it. If it doesn't it's something else.

This bug is software: had this problem since installing: cyanogenmod nightlies and milestone updates after m9. On GPe rom (by jamal) all was good; when I got the phone back from an RMA it was good as well on stock rom. It is a software bug that will eventually mess up your hardware as I experienced before.
When this bug is present in the logcat it says something like: "wpa_supplicant: failed to initiate AP scan."
Unfortunatly I don' have enough skills to research this further and find a workaround or fix it..

WiFi on my Nexus 4 has been absolutely fine for two years, but started dropping connections around the time of the 5.1.1 update.
When a factory reset didn't fix things, I rooted it and installed CyanogenMod 11: same problem. So I reverted to the very latest Lollipop factory image, including the "radios" file. Same problem, with three different routers.
I have just figured out the Bluetooth issue, and although it's early days, the result seems very clear: with BT off, WiFi is fine. With BT on (doesn't have to be connected), WiFi is flaky.

Hey folks, has anyone had any success resolving this issue?
I spoke with a technician at Google device support and he told me to:
1. Upgrade the OS from 4.4.4 to 5.1.1, and if that doesn't work
2. Factory reset data, and if that doesn't work
3. Call back and talk to hardware warranty support about a replacement.
He also gave me a stern talking to about rooting, though I'll admit I'm not really clear on why - I was under the impression that all Nexus phones are unlocked and rooted when they're shipped out, so how can the factory defaults result in a violation of the warranty?
Anyway, to point, before I dive into this rather arduous process I'd like to make sure there is some chance of success. The preceding comment (#256) suggests that none of these efforts proved effective, and I am loath to waste a bunch of my time and effort backing up my phone and running updates just to prepare the device for offsite diagnostics - frankly the effort of finding a replacement phone and waiting for the return to be processed is more annoying than just using a wired headset.
Fyi, mine is a Nexus 5.

Just to pile on, I have a Galaxy Tab 4.0 for which I recently purchased an external bluetooth keyboard. Once the keyboard is connected, Wifi works fine for a minute or two, then cuts out. Just to add to my previous comment: I've found that I can get the WiFi connection to hold on my Galaxy Tab 4 (Android 5.1.1) if I turn Wifi and Bluetooth off, then enable Bluetooth and let it connect with the keyboard, then turn Wifi on. I only tried that yesterday and so far it works. Not thrilled about it, but I can live with it.

I've been suffering through horrible Wi-Fi connection on my Moto X (with my wife's Moto X being just fine through the same wireless access points) until I stumbled upon this thread and it helped me to (mostly) solve the problem (by switching to the 5 GHz only band).
Up until this point, I used a task killer to kill tasks regularly because I found that various random apps running in the background was causing the interference. Killing them would very noticeably solve the problem until they auto-ran again. I didn't want to get rid of these apps, though, because they are associated with hardware that I use regularly. There's the Automatic app which connects to my Automatic device (plugs into the car) and the Android Wear app for my Moto 360.
So, it turns out all along that these apps regularly use Bluetooth which, in turn, was regularly causing interference with my wireless. It would cause my Wi-Fi connection to drop, then it wouldn't show my wireless access points (just neighbors')... then mine would show up again, it would start connecting, then wham, lose signal. It was horribly frustrating. With only the 5 GHz band turned on, this seems to be keeping things more stable so far. {crossing fingers}
The reason this is only a partial fix is because if I come across a wireless access point that only supports 2.4 GHz, I will need to manually tweak settings to connect to it, then must suffer the consequences. This isn't acceptable.
Does anyone know of an app that, maybe, might be able to automatically change this setting when appropriate, at least to minimize the amount of manual hand-holding that would need to be handled before Google gets around to fixing this issue in 20 years or so?

Not fixed. Somewhat alleviated might be a better description. Nexus 4, Lolipop 5.1.1. I am also seeing problems when using wi-fi and bluetooth at the same time. Using an app called "Wi-Fi SweetSpots" that analyzes wifi performance, I streamed local music via bluetooth to a Samsung sound-bar. I have a direct line-of-sight to my wi-fi router only a few feet away. I watched as the app was happily reporting wi-fi performance of ~18Mbs and then crater to ~2Mbs when I hit play on the music to initiate BT streaming. WOW! Essentially, what this means is that I cannot reliably use Google Play Music radio and BT speakers. Please fix.

Pathetic and unacceptable that this is still an issue 36903752 + years later. Issue:
- Have a Bluetooth speaker paired with my Moto X (2nd Gen).
- Connected via wifi and LTE. Wifi takes priority.
- Try to play music over Google Play. Music loads PAINFULLY slow.
- Turn off wifi while Google Play Music is struggling to play. Instantly, the track resets the download, starts over LTE (since wifi is now disabled), loads immediately. Starts playing fine.
This is clearly an issue, and for Google to ignore it for 3+ years, when so many people have reported the problem, is sad and unacceptable. Fix this, your community deserves better.

I think the BT and wifi conflict because they use same chipset and same antenna. It seems there is no way to make sure these 2 modules works well until your devices use a better BT/WIFI chipset. Now all cell phones use same chipset with these 2 modules because cost down. Maybe CSR or broadcomm will have a good chipset later.
Form my device log, once wifi start to send or rec data, BT will block a while. And if BT RFCOMM start to connect, wifi will lost for a while.

Description
I have wifi on all the time and working properly, no network drops. I connect my bluetooth headset. Wifi still seems to function properly. Only when the bluetooth is actually in use (ie. listening to music or taking a phone call on the headset) does it seem to disrupt my wifi connection. If I turn my bluetooth headset off, wifi will work perfectly again without any drops.
- What happened.
When my bluetooth headset is being used, (ie. listening to music or taking a call on the headset), wifi connection will drop. It connects again within a few seconds. But it's enough disruption to cause skipping in streaming music, video, games, etc. that use data. You can see the whole wifi icon disappear from the top then come back greyed out. Then turn blue again as if re-connecting.
- What you think the correct behavior should be.
All antennae should be working perfectly with eachother. None of them should cause the others to disconnect.
Don't forget to mention which device you have, and which version of Android
is installed on it. (Find it under Home > Menu > Settings > About phone.)
Nexus 4, Android 4.2.1
