procfw - issue #51

MemoryStick Contents Missing(seems like the root memory was modified after playing FFVIII PSN version)

Posted on Jun 8, 2011 by Happy Elephant

What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. playing psx final fantasy VIII 2. i changed the display to custom 3. i quit the game using "Home"button then i browse my videos and games. now its telling me "no contents"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? Pro B-6 permanent;psp3000 3g

Please provide any additional information below. i checked the memory stick contents on a pc and what i found out are these files:CONFIG.BIN, ICON0.PNG, SCEVMC0.VMP, SCEVMC1.VMP

i checked the properties of MS and it seems the files are still there but the path or memory path has been modified when i quit psx FFVIII. Memory stick information:

User Capacity: 7690MB Free Space: 406MB

so, the contents are still there but the correct file path has been modified some sort of. i do not want to reformat my MS as i have no backup with my plugins and modified cheat database and some important files.

i hope you can help me quick with this issue.

It seems that the save game folder of your FFVIII PSX has gotten remapped as the root of your MS.

This problem might actually not specific to PRO CFW. I have encountered exactly the same problem twice before when I was using 5.03 GEN-C on my PSP-3000; none so far since I had PRO-B3 and above. The first case I encountered was quite fortunate, as it was the entire PSP folder that turned to the MS root; hence, I can salvage all my save data. That time I was playing Breath of Fire 3 on CSO image.

The second time was when I was playing Chrono Cross PSX game, and it was exactly the same as your problem. The game save folder became the root of the MS. I tried some file recovery software, and it did not return any useful information. Running windows scandisk only recover useless fragments of data (better don't do it). I ended up reformatting the MS and losing all of my other save games except for the Chrono Cross.

My suggestion is keep a backup of your important data regularly, as I found that this is a very much random occurrence. So far, I have never been able to reproduce the effect, and in my cases, both happens when I turn the PSP on from sleep. So, I always try to avoid putting my PSP to sleep mode while playing a game.

i am glad someone experienced the same problems. actually i have been busy just awhile ago recovering the files. i did get a lot of .chk files but i cannot convert it to the correct file types. maybe i will just reformat my memory stick then and move on. though i was lucky enough to recover all "saved game data". i was just worried about my modified cheat database and some plugin configuration as i need to experiment again.

yeah, i should backup regularly. thanks for dropping by "aditi". i hope this is just random and not a critical bug.

i am done reformatting my memory stick. i loaded the usual games and plugins but now its worse, i can no longer play FFVIII PSN version. everytime i run the game, i only get black screen then after few seconds my psp just shut off. i am also having problems with patapon3, the saved data says corrupted after loading it.

I guess i need to revert back to pro-b5. everythings working pretty fine with pro-b5.

by the way, just to be clear, i am using 6.20 pro-b6 with permanent patch. after reverting back to b5, i will update if i still experienced the same issues.

Most likely it's caused by a faulty memory stick with bad blocks remapping to critical blocks such as the ones FAT table allocated on.
