btstack - issue #47

Bluetooth Unavailable (iPad)

Posted on Jun 26, 2010 by Happy Panda

When I go into my Settings->General page on my iPAd, it shows Bluetooth "Unavailable". I start up BTStack GPS and the message is "Bluetooth not accessible!"

It was initially working after I downloaded BTStack GPS now a few days later itI'm getting this error. I've tried to turn off the iPad off completely but that doesn't bring it back. I've also tried to reinstall BTStack & BTStack GPS but this didn't help either.

I've previously had this issue and a full restore corrected it. However I'm on the road this time and a full restore isn't possible for me, and I'd prefer not to do a reset either.

In the syslog I'm seeing the following message:Jun 26 15:10:43 The-Guide com.apple.BTServer[778]: Running /etc/bluetool/iPad1,1.boot.script. Jun 26 15:10:43 blahblah com.apple.BTServer[778]: Cannot read termcap database; Jun 26 15:10:43 blahblah com.apple.BTServer[778]: using dumb terminal settings. Jun 26 15:10:43 blahblah com.apple.BTServer[778]: Opening com.apple.uart.bluetooth @ 115200 baud. Jun 26 15:10:43 blahblah com.apple.BTServer[778]: bluetool: wake failed: error 13

hi. Hard to say, do other extensions like SBSettings work? Anyway, lease try to re-install/update MobileSubstrate using Cydia There was a problem with it last week. Please report back here. Best Matthais

SBSettings does work, I can use it successfully to control wifi, ssh, and veency.

One thing I have noticed is that after a complete power cycle my iPad is very unresponsive. Swiping between pages hangs and it takes away for presses to be recognized. SSHing into the iPad and doing 'sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.BTServer.plist' stops this and brings back the normal responsiveness. Once I've done this I can usually run BTStack GPS at least once before getting the "Bluetooth not accessible" message.

I'll try reinstalling MobileSubstrate today and get back to you on if it fixes it.

what's the verdict? did it help?

Unfortunately reinstalling sbsettings did not work. My bluetooth is still showing as unavailable but it is active as other devices can detect my iPad. BTStack GPS does work when activated but regular bluetooth does not work and I cannot disable it either.

What logs can I get for you that would help you diagnose the problem?

Before we check the logs, please try the following (slightly updated) version of BTstack. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5138628/BTstack-0.2-799.deb In that, BTstack shuts down Apple Bluetooth server when it quits, this helps getting Apple's BT activated again. Do you know how to install the .deb?

I'm familiar with .debs and I've downloaded and installed it. It did have an error, listed below, but completed install. I do not have my gps available at the moment but I'll test everything out tonight and get back to you.

/var/lib/dpkg/tmp.ci/extrainst_: line 5: ldid: command not found.

strange that the deb would complain about a missing ldid on OS 3.2. ldid is crucial for 4.0, but irrelevant for 3.2. Your problems actually are not relevant to the GPS itself, it's more switching between Apple's Bluetooth Stack and mine. I'm curious too.. :)

Well it appeared to work initially but playing around last night with iBluever and BTStack GPS (man I wish I could use them together) it appeared again.

Right now if I power cycle my iPad on start it's slow and hangs until I use launchctl to unload BTServer. Also until I unload BTServer neither BTStack GPS or iBluever will run. Once I stop BTServer I can run either but when they are off my bluetooth still shows as up to other devices and it shows as unavailable under Settings.

Very weird.

can you try uninstalling iBluever and see if switching between BTstack and Apple's Bluetooth work at least?

My bluetooth is working fine. But BTStack GPS still says 'Bluetooth is not accessible'. Actually it is, but BTStack GPS thinks it itsn't.

OMFG... I'm so stupid!!! ; )

I was running Apple's bluetooth while opening BTStack GPS. And that won't work of course. Forgive my bad.

I had exactly the same issue. Feel dumb :) The program interface is very minimal, no help, no intro, just a message "Bluetooth not accessible". I suggest as a quick fix some help would be useful for paid application. As permanent fix it'd be nice to automatically deactivate Apple's stack upon BTStack launch and activate reverse back when external GPS is not available or upon program exit.

Hi. The BTstack apps do turn off Apple's Bluetooth but In the last BTstack Package, this got disabled by accident. Will be fixed in the next BTstack update.

Due to the install of bt stack over-riding the ipad or devices bluetooth - all you need to do is turn off bluetooth in the setting menu of the device and then activate the bt stack mouse app.

it will search then select the mouse by tapping the screen on the item and it will work.

i spent nearly a entire morning trying to find this out and i couldn't believe it when it worked.

Since the December 2010 update of BTstack, Apple's Bluetooth is properly turned off. It will also provide a new manual switch app/prefs bundle to select: off, iOS Bluetooth, or BTstack.
