btstack - issue #40

Mouse: Mouse use on iPad degrades wireless download performance

Posted on May 27, 2010 by Swift Cat

What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Run btstack keyboard and mouse applications 2. Run speed test application (have tried several)

  1. Wireless connection intermittently drops as well

What is the expected output? What do you see instead? Download speed expected is 21kb/s with out btstack active Download speed actual is ~2kb/s with keyboard and mouse Disable mouse and keyboard apps will cause temporary loss of wireless

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? 1.0-24939 on os 3.2

Please provide any additional information below.

I need to re-file this with btStack Mouse - keyboard operation without the mouse app running doesn't seem to affect wireless network performance noticeably.

additional testing results : i am using SpeedtestHD and Speedtest apps for the testing. After going into the control panel and adjust the mouse setting back to 1x or less; network download bandwidth improves to ~4kb/s - setting the mouse speed adjust back to max speed and the network download bandwidth decreases once again to ~2kb/s.

I also can not attach a file from my iPad, which I am currently on, so I will need to get to supported platform to attach any needed screen shots of the network bandwidth results. Fairly easy to reproduce and the apps are free....

Thanks for reporting the performance loss. The mouse speed in Settings.app does not make a difference, as it just sets the multiplier for relative mouse movements.

Bluetooth and WLAN work in the same radio range, and are usually even implemented in a single chip, which can only do one or the other. Also, usually Bluetooth kils Wlan and not the other way round, as it's frequency hopping is more resistant to interference.

Did you move the mouse while measuring? You can check the (size of the) file /tmp/hci_dump.pklg which records all Bluetooth data between processor and BT module. Not sure if I can do anything about that.

I experienced the same problems. Once BTStack Mouse ist started and Magic Muse connected the ipad cuts the WLAN connection. Is there any chance for a fix? Thx Malcom

I don't know. It happens to me with Apple's Bluetooth too. Just do a device discovery for 20 seconds and check the WLAN symbol.

I can tell that there isn't something BTstack actively does to cause the Wifi connection loss. However, I did only experience this while doing the discovery. Afterwards I can log into the iPad/iPhone over WLAN again.

I have this exact same problem, and it only happens with the mouse connected. It does not happen at all using the native Apple Bluetooth stack. Using the Apple Bluetooth to connect to a BT keyboard doesn't create the same issue at all for me (I can use Wifi for hours with no issues), but using the BT stack mouse causes WiFi disconnects within minutes.

This is reproducible 100% of the time within 5 minutes of using the BT stack mouse, and never happens for me while using the apple stack plus keyboard. Is there any chance for more research and a BT mouse update to fix this?

As I said before, BT and Wifi use the same hardware and antenna. If a device rarely sends, like a BT keyboard, this does not cause any issues with WLAN. Please try also with BTstack Keyboard, I would be surprised if using it causes problems for WLAN. Does the mouse send a lot of data? If so, then that's causing the problem. So far, I don't think there's a difference between Apple's OEM BT stack and mine.

I tried with just the keyboard - it perhaps slows down wifi but doesn't drop it entirely like the mouse easily does. BT mouse drops the signal entirely, even if I'm right next to the access point.

I know they're in the same frequency range, but this isn't a problem with my desktop which has bluetooth keyboard and mouse and connects via Wifi, or even my iphone while using a bluetooth headset with the native apple stack, which I assume is sending even more data over bluetooth than my mouse, and browsing the internet via WiFi.

I have this problem at work but not at home. I use a brand new D-Link at work (which doesn't act as a DHCP or DNS server - this is taken care of by the SBS 2008 server) and and old D-Link which does act as a DHCP server at home...

BT Stack Keyboard is searching for ever for devices and therefore doesn't connect to the keyboard and while the mouse is connected, WLAN gets very unstable.(Ipad 3G, 4.2.1, Magic Mouse,Apple keyboard)

I don't have much hopes but you can use BTC Mouse & Trackpad which uses iOS Bluetooth Stack. (It merely grabs the mouse data but doesn't influence the Bluetooth communication).
