Rebooted a couple times and wakelock is still present. Went into Backup and Reset turned off backup, restarted, turned it back on. Phone is now sleeping again, not sure if it will happen again in 24 hours when backup kicks in.

I checked with ADB and I have the same issue on my Nexus 5X.

It has been like this about a week now. I've cleared data for android system and play services, and it was better for a few days, then the problem came back.

Could it maybe be related to Google Photos backup and not the Android backup system?

I have disabled the backup trhough the android settings, restarted the phone. Then i turned off the phone, booted into recovery and wiped dalvik cache. It has been like 30 hours while using the phone normally and it didn't come back yet. I'll post if it stays like this.

I have the same issue.  Happens when i put the phone on charge and it is on wifi.

When I remove from charge, it stays awake until I do a reboot.

I have enabled the backup/restore setting and the wakelock came back, after disabling - wakelock disappeared.

Can you please disable backup -> reboot to recovery -> wipe cache & DALVIK cache -> reboot to system -> enable backup? It seems to work to me.. but not sure, 12h elapsed since I did this and no issues but.. I'm not convinced.. issue can come back as some other people said..

Disable backup, clear storage cache, reboot to recovery clear cache, reboot and enable backup seems to fix it for me, it has been about a week no more backup wakelock.

Updated to May security patch and wiped dalvik cache, still have back up on and it seems to have fixed the issue. Will report back if it returns.

I have this bug too. Checked with battery-historian and the ANDROID_SYSTEM : *backup* wakelock seems to be the problem.

Same problem with a Z1 Compact and Sony stock firmware (based on Android 4.4 ).
Disabling the backup of my data makes this wakelock disappear.

Problem identified with Betterbatterystats. No changes have been made to backup configuration in the latest weeks.

This is widespread at this point I see other threads. Its been killing my battery as well since last month. I am connecting those other threads that I have run into, with similar user complaints.

Hopefully google addresses this fast.

I have this on my 6p as well, April update.   I think it's important to note that this is the kind of thing that the average user isn't going to know what is going on - just "my battery life sucks", most won't know to check if their phone now sleeps.   Backup off, and it's sleeping again.  Fix it, please.

Confirming this happens on my 6P using the April patch. For now I disabled Backup, cleared cache partition and hoping for better news. This phone used to sleep like a log, running a marathon of battery life during the day.
Glad that I'm not alone and others are having this issue, and that this is being posted on here. Would it help if we posted this on the Nexus 6P forums as an official thread rather than what's been linked above?

Confirming this issue on a Nexus 6 with MOB30I

I had this issue happen on both MOB30D and MOB30I, and I can confirm that I have not been seeing this wakelock for the past four days since I reverted the Google App from the beta version to the stable. I suggest everyone try it, especially now that there don't seem to be many differences between the two apps.

Same here: Google Play Services updated to 9.0.82 manually on Huawei Ascend P6, phone restarted several times (with cache and Dalvik cache wipe..) but issue still present and phone does not sleep until backup is disabled.

Same here. I basically did the following

a) installed latest google play services, b) disabled all backups settings (app, photos, drive) c) rebooted d) installed May android images e) cleared dalvic,  f) cleared cache partition, g) cleared storage cache h) rebooted.

At the beginning it looked great, *backup* nowhere to be found and phone was normally sleeping. Put it on a charger let it there for an hour, unplugged and was never able to idle again. It was awake constantly again and the backup process draining the battery. For some reason the OS cannot see the charger disconnect and allows the backup process to continue running. Seems like a combination of hardware / software thing.

I definitely was experiencing the same thing. As I said, rolling back the update is the only change, apart from few app updates. I still charge the phone (Nexus 6) every night, still have backup on, still on Google Play Services 8.7... I would like to help anyone out if I can.

I have the same problem on my HTC One M8. Temporary solution is to reset the phone as soon as you turn off the charger. I hope this helps.

I have updated to the latest Google Play Services and it hasn't made a difference. I had a few days there where the wakelock went away, but it was back again this morning after taking my phone off the overnight charge.

I'm not sure what happened but I've stopped experiencing this issue for the last two days now. It has disappeared temporarily before but never this long. Haven't changed any settings or updated anything outside of any automatic play store updates.

s6 has this problem from Aprils update. In May update this isn't fixed.

Samsung 920I with May update has this. Seems to be related to GCM as after message arrives wakelocks begin.

If you have a non-Nexus device (some sort of hilarious Samsung thing for example) then there's no point posting here.
They add all sorts of custom code, all of which has the potential to add many different bug vectors.

These forums are for Android Open Source Project bugs. The only devices running AOSP are Nexus devices.  All others, you need to report the issue to your device Vendor.

Excuse me, but when I push several, independent parts of my body with my index finger and it hurts every time then probably my index finger is broken = when several Android users with various version of code reports that an Android service (the backup and restore service) causes a serious issue for them then to me it means that the *service itself* has issues..

Everybody here is using the same Google/Android service - we are all humans and have the same issue. Just sayin'.

If you know a better place to share our issue and experience let us know - be nice and constructive.. it seems not only the Nexus devices are affected. We are trying to move this forward and let people know that this is probably a bigger issue. I understand that this forum is only for AOSP and Nexus issues but please consider the fact that we are all using Android, different versions but when we go to the same menu and check the same checkbox we experience the same issue. The method how the devices are doing the backup and restore should be the same because if I buy a new device and add the same account I will see the same settings on my new device as my old.. thus (to me at least..) logic says something is wrong or has been changed on the other side probably.. on the Google servers..
In my immediate environment we have 8 Android devices, all has been made by different manufacturers and running Android 4.x, some are rooted, some run custom ROM, some are stock - but all are suffering from the same problem, the workaround to disable backup and restore function are working for all 8 devices.. Coincidence? I think not.

The *backup* wakelock is activated once you plug your device into the charger and it continues to manifest no matter what you do because it is stuck in a buggy loop, only reboot will fix it temporarily until you charge the phone again.
Through many trial and error experimentation I finally found an easier fix than rebooting every day.
1- Reboot the phone (just once to fix the wakelock, or the next steps won't work if it's already activated)
2- Before charging the phone, turn off WI-Fi & Google Backup
3- Fully charge the phone
4- Unplug the phone
5- Turn Wi-Fi & Google Backup on again
6- ???
7- Profit!

The culprit is Google Backup, and the bug is activated once the device is plugged into the charger and on Wi-Fi, but if it's turned off before and during charging with Wi-Fi off it'll not be activated.
But if the wakelock is already activated, it won't go away even if you turned backup off.
The Wi-Fi is a strange case, I once rebooted the phone, turned backup off and charged the phone with Wi-Fi on and I had the wakelock. My guess is even with backup off, some logs will still try to backup when Wi-Fi is on (Wi-Fi passwords maybe)

4th day without the Android System battery drain and both my Nexus 6P and Galaxy S7 Edge doze properly now.

HTC One M9, Android Revolution HD 20.0. Same problem. I spent two days reading and investigating in order to pinpoint what is draining the battery. Yesterday I disabled Backup, froze Google Backup Transport, then rebooted and everything is normal.

This is absolutely unacceptable. I've always said that Android is a piece of shit because of such idiotic bugs which prevent users from using their phones normally. Even if phone manufacturers put 10000 mAh battery inside, with such kind of bugs we'll never experience a normal battery life.

Let's see how long it would take for the Google idiots to acknowledge the bug and fix it. God knows how many people out there are already considering changing their phones because of "poor battery life".

I have disabled backup and now turn off wifi before charging and this seemss to have fixed my drain issue. This is temporary until this iss fixed by Google.

If you have rooted phone disabling Google Backup Transport completely and all Backup services in "Google Play Services" solves the problem. I used DisableService app from Play Store.

After nearly a week without the issue on my stock rooted 6p the issue returned this morning. Nothing I can think of in terms of changed settings, will just hope it goes away again I guess.

I've got this problem as well on my Nexus 5X with May security patch. Just 2 days ago I decided to turn back up on, because I hadn't used it before, and using battery historian I found out about the issue. I hope it gets fixed soon.

Same thing happening on my Nexus 5x. I don't recall exactly when it started, but I would say within the last 4 weeks or so. The symptoms are as described here - phone stays awake 100% of the time after unplugging from charger with "Android OS" as the main culprit.

When I have switched off the "Backup my data" in "Backup & reset", this doesn't occur. Another classic Android bug which will likely take a year to get fixed. Sigh.

I have Lenovo P70 with KitKat 4.4.4. Same issue here... Hope they fix it soon.

Exactly the same problem for me on stock Nexus 6p.  Backup is keeping the phone awake after unplugginf from charge.  rebooting the phone after unplugging from the charger fixes it until I charge it again then same thing happens after unplugging from charger.

Caught this even on 5.1.1 today, so it appears to originate earlier than from 6.0.1. Also happens after plugging the cable in and disappears after the reboot.

Happening in Android N Beta 3 on Pixel C too.

Went from Marshmallow to Android N DP 3 on my Nexus 5X, still the same issue. Every now and then the wakelock appears. Also seen it happen on my gf's LG G4 with Marshmallow.

Having the same issues on my Nexus 5X running 6.0.1 Build MTC19T.
Have the May Security Patches installed, and the issue has been ongoing for 4-6 weeks I would guess.
Have just tried disabling Backup, rebooting to recovery, wiping cache and rebooting again.
Phone is charging now so will wait and see for the results.

Resolved the constant wakelock from Android System by:
-disabling Backup
-rebooting to recovery
-wiping cache
-rebooting again

After a full charge, there is no longer a constant wakelock from Android System but there are partial wakelocks from Android System and Google Services.

Battery life is much improved with 1.5 hours screen time.

I have this too on stock N, DP3 (Nexus 6p). After analysis with battery historian it seems to be the same issue.

I disabled backup without anything else and now it seems to correctly deep sleep again after unplugging from USB (at least for now - 1 day of testing).

I've gone back to the March security release on my S6 and it is working perfectly.

Nexus 5X, 6.0.1. My phone stays awake every time after unplugging from charger. Sometimes it happens randomly (not after unplugging). Restart fixes the problem temporarily. The issue is here since April security update and May security update didn't help.
It's a strange problem... Last week it was gone! I thought may be some app update fixed it. For 5 days I had no problem at all, but since yesterday it's back again :(

We need to resubmit this issue with bug reports so it'll actually catch the attention of the Android team. They seem to ignore anything without a proper bug report. I have not had this bug pop up in a couple days now, so I can't do it until it returns. In the mean time, if you're experiencing this, please resubmit the issue WITH A BUG REPORT for the sake of everyone. I will do the same when it comes back to me.

I already posted that I have ths problem on my nexus 6p. I just discovered I have the same issue on my Galaxy Tab S running 5.0.2. The same *backup* wakelock is preventing it sleeping.

Must be an issue with Google Play Services then.

Not sure, i went back to the March security release for my S6 and the issue has completely gone.

Here's an update on what I've found: with backup off, if I reboot the phone, it seems to be good for a while. Something else however will eventually trigger a perpetual wakelock like the backup did. It's just that restarting WILL fix the wakelock, unlike when backup being on would cause.

I am unsure which app is now causing this or if it's also another Google Service which was playing foul with Backup. Has anyone else experienced the wakelock being active even with Backup off, but it goes away after a reboot?

My Pixel C has the problem with wakelock off and after a reboot. Not immediately after a reboot. My suspicion is this happens after a notification is received from GCM.

The fact that this bug is still marked as priority small is what's wrong with Android.

This is widespread issue. It happens on other Android devices too, not only on Nexus or Pixel. Turning off backup in Settings solve this problem, which renders backup Android feature useless. Photos backup still works.

Someone suggested turning off bluetooth share service and this has worked for me. No bluetooth though unfortunately

For me too, turning off Google account "Backup my data" appears to have solved the issue on my S7 Edge.

How the hell is the priority on this bug marked as small, as it affects several users, and also the upcoming N release?

I've turned off backup and restarted my phone, after that it's okay. If I left it on, the phone would sometimes be unusable because of the battery drain.

I have an Xperia M5 - same issue

No Whatsapp on my phone, Viber is installed. Issue hasn't repeated after I turned off backup and restarted phone.

Same for me: I have both Viber and WhatsApp installed and still, the issue is gone after switching off backup + restart.

S6 edge: Had no wakelock for some time, now back again, have latest rom patch (june). After restart no wakelock, charging wakelock back. Very annoying.

Nexus 5x here, same iaaue. Android System constantly keeps the phone awake. Reboot fixes the issue temporary, or until next charge. Tried wipe cache, factory reset, but problems begin again after some time. June update did not fix the problrm. It is getting very frustrating...

S7 edge here, went from 5 hours screen on time to 2 hours this last week because of this.

I think this is getting really ridiculous. The issue has been opened for 2 months now, it is being present for so many people, not to mention that it impacts not only nexus devices, and it is still small priority with no owner assigned. Can this be escalated somehow or what?

Did you guys try with the latest play services? I upgraded to 9.2 last night and no wakelock so far (not saying it's fixed yet but with a try).

S7 Edge AT&T variant here. I've tried airplane mode, I've uninstalled apps, last night I turned off google back up but still am getting 30-40% battery drain when it used to be 3-4% total throughout the night.

Last time this happened I found that it was facebook and uninstalling that fixed it. I'm not sure what it is this time around.

So much for Google play services 9.2. Still the case...

I read everything in here and all I can say is that Google is a piece of shit for not fixing the issue, I wonder why tons of people are still switching to iphones ... hmmm....

I'll try to charge my phone with WiFi off until Google fix this terrible issue.

Xperia Z5, disabling Backup & Reset really brought back Doze. ForceDoze stats were around 10 to 20 seconds, while after disabling it went all the way up to 30 minutes (which is the duration I left it on standby).

Latest beta 2 (Dev preview 4) still has this issue. Nexus 5X.

I've had this issue for a few months too.  I turned off backup and it fixed it, turned it back on and the wakelock came back after a few hours of charging.  Has anybody tried actually wiping their phone and starting over and restoring from the backup?  I don't really want to do that, but I will if it works...

Also some things that might help you identify this issue:

Run "adb shell dumpsys power" and you'll get a report of power usage that contains something like:

Wake Locks: size=1
  PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK              '*backup*' (uid=1000, pid=28819, ws=null)

You can also run "adb shell dumpsys batterystats" and you'll get a more detailed report which contains something like:

  All partial wake locks:
  Wake lock 1000 *backup*: 2h 40m 31s 430ms (0 times) realtime

You don't need root or anything, just adb and developer options enabled.

I'm not sure if there's any way of getting a dev's attention here, but... please?  I really would like to have backup enabled, but it's not usable that way.

Nexus 5x, same issue, on stock MM and N preview and some custom roms. It happens randomly, I believe it starts with or have some connection with unsuccessfull synchronisation of stuff in google account. E.g. I have occasionally sync problem with contacts (sync expirenced problems and will retutn soon).
This is a huge issue and a deal breaker for android.

Galaxy S6 Edge and Nexus 5X both on stock, no root, same issue for long time. Awful support by Google. It is few months already and even not in priority.

This bug, looking on Google's own website, has been plagueing the battery life of Android since at the very least 2014, possibly even earlier.
Yet it's still present. This is why I've switched to Apple, it's simply unacceptable from Google to spend ZERO resources on fixing its broken platform.

IT's frustrating to see that they aren't even trying to fix this.

Same Problem here, it started about 1 1/2 year ago on my Nexus 5, rooted and some custom rom, so I didn't want to blame google. I switched off Google BackUp and used Titanium BackUp. Few Month later I switched to an OnePlus One, first thing was rooting. I realized the issue is still there, so same story. Google BackUp off, Titanium BackUp On. About a year ago i switched to Nexus 6, bootloader unlocked, rooted, custom rom, same story.... Now a few weeks ago I wanted to give stock android a try. I switched to N DP4 no root no nothing, i flashed everything. Still the same problem... My solution for now is to restart the phone every morning, what annoys me like hell...

Anybody has any idea how we can make google aware of this issue?

This is absolutely ridiculous ... i need to restart my phone after every charge so the phone can deep sleep correctly without draining 1% avery 10 minutes of screen off time on my s6 920f, if this won't get fixed soon my next phone will NOT be an android phone.

I have had this same issue since downloading the Marshmallow update two months ago. Droid Turbo 2.  Disabling Google Backup and rebooting after a full charge seems to be resolving the issue of a badly draining battery. I can say that I did not experience this issue on this same device before Marshmallow.

Had this problem on my Nexus 6P since I bought it in May 2016. Before on SGS5 never had this issue. And I never had this issue again ....... on my iphone :D

I have the same partial wakelock on my OnePlus One with the latest COS13.1 (Android 6.0.1). I can get rid of the wakelock if I disable Google Backup and reboot my phone. But really Google, isn't that a function that is supposed to work without creating a massive battery drain?

Let's face it, this is a real problem and it's affecting all kinds of different phones and ROMs. In fact I have seen reports of this wakelock being a problem since 2012 on and off and now we have it front and center again!

My humble request is just to have an error affecting the majority of the Android community fixed. Is that too much to ask?

I wonder sometimes if Google is doing any QA testing of their Android. This is not the first time that my NEXUS!!!1 phone with STOCK Android is affected by Google's buggy code, so now I think it probably isn't the last time as well.

Galaxy s6 edge, issues started in April (when updated to 6.0.1). In the mean-time I  received couple of updates for 6.0.1 but no change - the issue is still present.

For now I keep backup turned off, but I really consider different OS next time :( - approach to issues like this one is far from professional, quite surprising and disappointing.

We all are suffering from the same issue for months.. and all my friends as well using Android.. and no action from Google? Priority small, really?

It's pretty ridiculous how Google is ignoring this issue so far. If this problem carries over to Android N, then Google really needs to reconsider what a software company needs to do to insure proper software maintenance. Security should be a priority, but user experience should be on the top of the list as well. My phone standby performance was destroyed after the April patch. It drains over 10% of battery after 1 hour of standby. I am now relying on an app that automatically disables wifi whenever it's on standby because I will have to reboot my phone after recharge to get decent standby performance. The good news is that I have a Nexus phone, but other device users are stuck on their version for months on end.

The same problem on my Samsung Galaxy S5 (Android 6.0.1) and Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini (Android 5.1.1).

Had to disable Google Backup on both.

Priority: small ?? I encounter the same bug in Galaxy S6. It's not a minor issue, battery drains like crazy.

It is not a low priority issue please mark it as high. This bug is long time unsolved and it ruins the reliability of any Android device.

Priority low? For such a huge problem draining our battery it should be priority #1

So this just happened. The fix will be available in a future build. But this affects all the  phones, not only nexuses. If updated builds are the solutions, many will suffer.

Same problem on OnePlus 3. This should be very high priority.
