I locked the device. Posted on Jul 14, 2014 by Quick HorseYesterday I disabled LTE as the preferred network type and suddenly battery life had become much more realistic and ol' Miscellaneous seems to have calmed down (instructions: http://goo.gl/lpN9pH). There is still a lot of "Miscellaneous" battery usage (20% atm, Screen 6%, GMS 5%, OS 3%, System 2%), but battery life is closer to what it was on 4.4.
for what its worth: - Nexus 5 - Provider doesn't actually support LTE
Comment #19
Posted on Jul 14, 2014 by Massive Kangaroombre...@gmail.com - were you using LTE as your connection before disabling it? I don't have LTE where I live, so I'm wondering if disabling it, even when it's not available will have a noticeable effect.

Posted on Jul 15, 2014 by Massive RabbitDisabling LTE seemed to work at first, just as restarting the phone does (at least 1 out of 5 times) but as soon as my alarm went off today morning (for about 15mins straight until I stopped it) my battery went down from about 65% to 30% within the next hour with LTE disabled.
I guess i have to keep restarting the phone for now :(

Posted on Jul 17, 2014 by Swift Giraffehere's a bugreport for my duplicated issue #235 which has been merged here on https://code.google.com/p/android-developer-preview/issues/detail?id=235 for Slow UI Performance on 3G Network.
I saw lots of GC pauses and Jank Perceptible above 16ms. This bugreport is taken at noon when ambient temperature was around 30-33C outdoor on 3G connection and the battery temperature was around 38-42C. The transition animation was getting a lot of random jank.
Hope the final release of Android L will triumph smooth 60fps UI performance across all animation and scrolling on 3G connection and when the SOC throttles down to 1Ghz due to thermal throttling, or even when SoC is down to 700MHz such as in battery saver mode enabled. This will make the User Experience better for all of us who use Android on tropical country and on slow unreliable 3G connection.
peace :P

Posted on Jul 27, 2014 by Grumpy MonkeyI have seen my Nexus 5 running Android "L" with over 100% battery usage in "misc" a few times now. Here is a screenshot. I don't think the battery usage feature is working properly if this is occurring. It potentially calls into question ALL battery statistics on Android.
Proof:
Posted on Jul 27, 2014 by Helpful RabbitThe battery usage stats don't reset until the phone is fully charged. Since you recharged a few times, the stats kept going up, hence why you have over 100%.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Quick HorseFor info : I wiped more than 5 times with the factory image of Android L. There's absolutly nothing left in my Nexus 5. I deleted every single Android informations stocked in my google account from the dashboard. I have no applications whatsoever, except the very basic stuff provided by Google. Except from browsing, my battery is getting drained hard. Google Now is deactivated, Google location too. Wifi is always off when it's sleeping. How can I fill a bugreport to help you find the source of the battery drain ?

Posted on Oct 21, 2014 by Swift HippoI'm sure I used to have this same issue on KitKat but because there was no "miscellaneous" option, the drain was lumped in with "Android OS". Again, might be a red herring, but those particular issues seemed to get a lot worse after the Google Play Services 6.1.xx update which contained Fitness APIs I believe.

Posted on Oct 22, 2014 by Helpful KangarooSomeone else may have mentioned this, but I don't believe these are new source of battery drain.
I believe that this "Miscellaneous" label is a collective label for those battery drain sources that the Android team hasn't been able to identify/classify, yet.
Yes, it's kind of bad that such significant portion of the battery drain hasn't been identified/classified, but I don't think this is really anything new (probably something in the OS level).
If they can't find all the battery drain sources, at least, they can give a better (less alarming) name/title for this label.
Posted on Oct 22, 2014 by Helpful DogMy computed power use is 992mAh, vs. an actual power use of 1679mAh. I honestly don't see how this much power is being used in a way Android can't cope with.
Posted on Oct 22, 2014 by Quick DogThere's definitely at least one major new drain, as my battery is being drained significantly faster than on KitKat. I have tested with WiFi on and off, and it doesn't seem to affect the rate the battery is drained very much; both still consistently yield Miscellaneous being the primary drain with it consuming 40-50% of the battery. My WiFi is encrypted with WPA2-Personal. "Miscellaneous" is draining much more power than the screen is, even when the screen is on the entire time.

Posted on Oct 27, 2014 by Massive GiraffeSame problem. Battery life is about 3-4 hours on a Nexus 5. Even with NFC off and wifi off (so only connected to my cell network's LTE).
Have not tried the above suggestion of turning off Location Services; I merely downgraded back to 4.4.4 because I am not near outlets during the workweek in case it did not work.
Posted on Oct 28, 2014 by Massive MonkeyI was able to eliminate the drain by turning off the "Scanning always available" setting that's in the Wi-Fi screen's Advanced menu (for me, turning off Location Services had no effect).

Posted on Oct 29, 2014 by Swift GiraffeAlmost two weeks using Nexus 5 on this LPX13D build, I notice the phone often runs hot. Never had the warm to hot feeling when touching the upper and bottom part of the phone on KitKat though.
The battery temperature easily reaches 45C if using it for a while and on average it ranges between 40 to 45C.
I know September and October is the hottest of all in Indonesia and as I recall, old Nexus 4 back then on Jelly Bean didn't experience the above symptom at all.
Posted on Oct 29, 2014 by Grumpy MonkeyConfirming I have also experienced this issue under lpx13d. Averaged around 50% misc. and the issue started suddenly after around a week of flawless performance. None of the above suggested fixes seemed to work. I am currently travelling in the US and am using Google maps and Uber a lot, so lots of location services activity. Phone eventually ended up in a boot loop and I ended up having to downgrade the phone to 4.4.4 using fastboot after formatting via recovery partition.
Probably worth noting that the phone was rooted and had Chainfire's custom android L kernel installed, though I don't believe this to be the cause of the issue.
Posted on Oct 29, 2014 by Massive GiraffeThe suggestion about in #81 seems to have done a good job of extending the battery life. Even more so when the WiFi is off entirely. (And the drain is worse when not connected to a WiFi network with the WiFi on than when connected to a network.)
The battery stats still state that Miscellaneous is BY FAR the biggest battery user, but I care a lot less about that since the battery life is usable.

Posted on Oct 29, 2014 by Helpful KangarooI've found that turning off my phone, and removing the non-removable battery fixes the issue.
Posted on Oct 29, 2014 by Happy RabbitAnother day, another time that Miscellaneous is the power user #1. :( Other than that, today I noticed that there are two entries for what supposed to be the same: "Android OS" and "Android System"!? What's even more confusing is that they both show completely different stats for the CPU usage!?
I'd really like to get some official feedback / clarification here; rather than hacky guesses (no means!).
It was said that the problem was resolved in the internal tree, which should have been ahead to public release. That was before the final 5.0 SDK and the LPX13D Preview builds have been released. So one might assume that "this issue" should not be present in the LPX13D builds. Well, as repeatedly reported, there's still an issue here. And if it's just the clarification about what exactly "Miscellaneous" stands for. (though, a look at the verbose sensor and battery manager logcat logs suggest that there's really something not working the way its supposed to be. And that it is related to connectivity (especially WiFi, but also GPS really suck)).

Posted on Nov 5, 2014 by Happy MonkeyAndroid Engineering is aware of an issue affecting Nexus 5 users running Android 5.0 which causes significant "Miscellaneous" battery usage while WiFi is enabled. This appears to be caused by an abnormally high number of IRQ wakeup events.
We are continuing to investigate this issue.
Posted on Nov 5, 2014 by Happy RabbitRe #98 Thanks for the comment, Trevor! The unusual high number of IRQ wakeup events is definitively something I can confirm for myself.
So just to get your comment on "ongoing investigation" right; At this time the issue is NOT resolved. Neither in the (latest) public souces nor in your internal code branches. Correct? Thanks again.

Posted on Nov 5, 2014 by Helpful Birdso what is the recommended course of action to minimize the battery drain? keep WiFi off as much as possible? and flashing the 4.4.2 radio as someone else mentioned?
Posted on Nov 5, 2014 by Happy Monkey101: At this time, turning WiFi off when it's not needed seems to be the most commonly recommended workaround.
I can't comment on using an older radio version, as this configuration has not been tested by engineering. In general, radio images are tightly paired with system images, and we do not support or recommend using an incorrect radio version.

Posted on Nov 5, 2014 by Grumpy HorseTrevor: Has this issue been investigated on the Nexus 6 software internally? The IRQ wakeup events could explain the unusual shorter rated battery life on WiFi vs LTE from the product page (Rated: 9.5 Hrs Wifi, 10 Hrs LTE). Typically, the opposite is true and the presence of this bug in the Nexus 6 5.0 software would explain the diminished rating.
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Helpful Giraffeis this issue only for nexus 5 or for all nexus devices?
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy WombatIn case this is helpful for the engineering team to track down this bug:
When I switch between two adjacent buildings wifi, it will cripple the entire network for a few minutes.
So, right now, if I walk away to the nearby building, everyone in that building goes "the internet is down again!". Then, when I come back everyone in my office groans because they lose their connection for a few minutes :)

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Massive PandaThe new handoffs could be causing the issue.
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy Rabbit@trevorjohns@google.com A further look at my logs suggest that, when WiFi is enabled, the phone is being kept awake permanently by "suspend_backoff" (and (almost) never goes into deep sleep)?! Additionally, I recognized a bunch of related, contextual permission denies for the radio.
When I just saw this, 2 things came to my mind:
1.) The discussed behavior here looks pretty much like an older suspend_backoff bug in BlueDroid; where BlueDroid sent disable calls to already disabled rfkill (which in turn caused unbalanced IRQs, which finally prevented the device from going to sleep).
2.) I'm not too much into SELinux.. But with all the recent restrictions and seeing all the permission denied logs, a first guess was that IRQs are maybe being send in the wrong context and/or not being considered in some SE policy!?
I'll have a further look into my logs tomorrow and provide the relevant parts of the logs here for further investigation (writing from my phone and also need to filter the relevant infos first). But it would be great if you, Trevor, could give a quick feedback whether SE related changes/restrictions may be the actual reason for a wrong context here. Thanks again.

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy RabbitRe #112: Thanks for the fix. However, I can't find a related change in Gerrit (except for maybe 112825, but that targeted the 3.1 kernel only).
So in order
- for those who tried to narrow this down to have a learning affect AND (more importantly)
- for all users to be able to -- keep further track of this issue -- check whether the suggested fix, really fixed one's issue,
could you please add a quick info about the cause of this issue (ie what was fixed)? Alternatively, a pointer to Gerrit would be completely satisfyingly too.
Thanks very much!

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy RabbitRe #113 - #137, #140: Gosh, this is a bug tracker; not the Android Police discussion forum. Thanks for not cluttering. Not.
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy RabbitPS: Just because AP said that this issue might be a valid reasone for postponing the N5 OTAs, this is NOT necessarily true! So please stop asking for OTAs here! You just clutter some people's inbox with irrelevant msgs. Thanks!

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy RabbitRe #144: Well, I wasn't addressing just you. Anyway, the correct place for all your related questions is still the product forums. Not the bug tracker.

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Quick HippoRe #145: Then i will go to the prodcut forums. and dont be a scumlord by telling me i forgot the question mark in such a manner.

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy RabbitRE #147: Bummer, I "corrected" my comment before you answered. Still too late obviously. So sorry for the misunderstanding. Don't wanted to sound like a scumlord but just tried to point out that I didn't understood it as a question - primarily because of the missing question mark (but also because engl isn't my mother's tongue).
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Quick HippoRe #152: Well no hard feelings. misunderstandings can happen from time to time. and english isnt my main language either.

Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy MonkeyLocking issue to new comments. This is a technical bug tracker for developers, please keep the discussion on-topic. As mentioned earlier in the thread, this is not the place to request OTAs.
Posted on Nov 6, 2014 by Happy Monkey139: Internal changes take a while before they're visible in AOSP. Once there's a link available, I'd be happy to provide more information.
