android-developer-preview - issue #1548

Trouble connecting to some Wifi networks

Posted on Oct 17, 2014 by Grumpy Panda

* Which version of the SDK are you using? Lollipop * Which Android build are you using? (e.g. LPX13D) LPX13D * What device are you using? Nexus 5 * What steps will reproduce the problem? (Please provide the minimal reproducible test case.) 1. Try to connect to WPA2 PSK wifi network 2. Enter password 3. See "Connecting" which becomes "Saved" and never connects

Try to connect to * How frequently does the issue occur? (e.g. 100% of the time, 10% of the time) 100% of the time

* What is the expected output? The wifi network would connect * What do you see instead? Several wifi networks I have tried just say "saved".

* Optional: Other information that would be helpful in resolving the issue. I tried flashing 4.4.4 on this device, and can then connect to these networks, so it seems to not be related to the network itself, or the hardware.

I am however able to connect to wifi via tethering to my 4.4 phone, or through a Mifi.

Thank you for reporting this issue. We have passed this on to the development team and will update this issue with more information as it becomes available.

I've also tried both 2.4 and 5 GHZ, I'll be able to try some more wifi networks later.

Issue 1560 has been merged into this issue.

I am also experiencing this. This only happens (so far) at work. When I put in the password for our "Guest" SSID, the "Corporate" and "VoIP" SSID's (broadcast from same AP's) also start saying "Saved" and none will connect.

I was previously able to connect to this network on earlier L Preview builds. The issue started after clean flashing LPX13D. I am able to connect to my home Wifi with no issues at all.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Helpful Bird

Can confirm that it it says saved and will not connect. WPS Push button works though (but it will disconnect after long sleep). Connects fine to Phone hotspot.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Grumpy Hippo

Can also confirm this issue on build LPX13D - worked fine prior to that.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Grumpy Horse

It might be related to what I described in issue #1620

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Grumpy Panda

I do think it's possible that #1620 is related, the networks that I tried that won't load do have a common set of characters at the beginning of the SSID.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Massive Hippo

I the networks I am trying to connect to do not share common elements in the SSID (one is pubtest, the other is Horns). There aren't any other networks that contain or start with those names (there isn't even a first letter match across the visible wifi).

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Grumpy Horse

On issue 1620, I did test: primary network SSID: "company" then each of those as the second SSID: company-guest company-gst companygst Those were causing issues.

When I changed SSIDs to company guest-company The issue disappeared.

Posted on Oct 20, 2014 by Massive Hippo

I am not trying to say there isn't an issue with similarly named SSIDs, just that this issue is not the same issue. That is there are two bugs.

Seeing the same thing against a WPA2-PSK network on a Cisco AP (corporate guest network). The logs show this:

I can confirm this issue.

It seems to happen with wifi that I already had setup in my Nexus 5 prior installing LPX13D. Tried to "forget" them and connect again but same results.

Best regards,

Same scenario that leads to the same issue. Connecting either through mifi or hotspot is seemless, no problem at all. At work, the ssid is only saved but the connection does not go through. Removing the battery nor flashing the phone does not fix the issue.

Yes, same issue here on the nexus 9. Although I couldn't test it with lpx13d, cause I couldn't connect to WiFi at work to download the ota.

Same issue here, with my Nexus 5 (LPX13D), 7 (LPX13D) and 9 (LRX21L). Connecting in KitKat/first Android L dev preview (LPV79) produced no errors and maintained an active, stable connection.

I think I figured out what the problem was at least on my end. I was able to create a few differently configured wireless networks to zero in on the culprit.

I tried a few different configurations but one setting consistently caused this issue, which was using AES as the encryption policy for the WPA2 network.

Creating a WEP network with the same name does not cause this issue, so I was able to rule out the similar network names being the cause. COMPANY_Employees, COMPANY_MobileDevices, COMPANY_Guest, etc will all connect as intended if they aren't using AES encryption.

It looks like lollipop has an issue with WPA2 AES encryption. As soon as I switched to TKIP, I was able to connect quickly and without issue. Hopefully this helps someone else out there while we wait for this issue to be fixed in Lollipop.

I can confirm on LRX21O that I am unable to connect to the wifi at my work. I'm pretty sure they use Cisco APs and the security shows up as WPA/WPA2 PSK. I cannot confirm whether it is AES or TKIP.

I am also experiencing this issue on newly built Nexus 5 on Lollipop (LRX210) on work Guest network (WPA-PSK). Factory reset does not work. Strangely, newly installed Lollipop on Nexus 7 (2013) (LRX21P) works fine. Works with no problems when restored back to 4.4.4 so assume that router and phone hardware are not at fault.

I can confirm the same. Here are my observations while recreating the issue.

It occurs with factory images, not with OTA. (I flashed and it didn't work and my friend did OTA and he is able to connect).

It seems to be an issue with CISCO routers(using EAP).(I have belkin in my home(WPA2), and able to connect.)

and FINALLY it will take time to fix this... check this thread. It's priority is small

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=78702

will go back to 4.4.4 and do OTA....

Nope, did factory upgrade (dirty) and connecting to our work 802.1x WiFi (PEAP) still works fine. That is with my N5. On my N9 I can't connect to that network. Not with the previous version and not after the update.

I was having this same issue where it could always connect to my work network on my Nexus 5 but my Nexus 9 would just sit in a "saved" state without connecting. My home network connected fine w/ both.

On the initial setup when importing settings into the Nexus 9 it did remember my pw, but never would connect. Even re-entering my pw on the Nexus 9 gave me the same "sit in a saved state without connecting" experience.

However... I found if I:

Went to my Nexus 9 and Disconnected from my work network "Forgot" the work network within the wifi settings

Went back to my Nexus 5 Disconnected from my work network "Forgot" the work network within the wifi settings

Then, went back to my Nexus 9 Connected to the work network (as I had tried a hundred times) It this time connected!

Went back to my Nexus 5 Connected to the work network as well!

I'm now connected on my work network with my Nexus 9 and Nexus 5, whereas previously my Nexus 9 just would not connect.

Not sure if this process works for anyone else, but it seems to be doing the job for me. I'll post here if that changes.

Dear Android Team,

I put LRX210 ota on my phone using the an adb minimal sideload (i have no idea what it means but i did it and it worked!)

Two problems that i noticed at least with my nexus 5 LRX210

  1. Wifi Connectivity- I am able to connect to my wifi HOWEVER, this connection is only working when confirmed each time through the settings menu. Meaning the Wifi will not connect using the toggle key through the official android widget or through the drop down toggle (when you turn it on it displays a ! next to the wifi meter on the toggle itself)

  2. The flashlight- The flashlight toggle stops working after 1 use. If i want to use it again i have to shut off my phone. And it turns off by itself (although i suspect it also could be shutting off with the screen timeout shutting off aswell) nonetheless once the phone turns off the flashlight seems like you cant turn it back on until the phone is restarted, until this is fixed im gonna have to use a dedicated app for the flashlight.

Hope you guys can fix these problems!

Same issue on my Nexus 5. The phone disconnects for no reason, and is not able to reconnect, even by retyping the WPA2 key, and sometimes it's not even able to detect any wifi network... After a reboot, perfectly reconnects.

Running Android 5.0 LRX21O No problem when it was in 4.4.4 KitKat Wifi access point uses WPA2-PSK.

I hope it will be fixed soon, thank you for your work!

Same here, even if it finally managed to catch the WiFi, it still does not receive any data. The OS also crashes when you go in Settings, and then press on "WiFi". Nothing happens, the phone just freezes.

I also have the same issue with LRX210. The phone saves the password but will not connect to one of our work networks that worked fine under KitKat. It fails to connect on 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. At home it connects fine to both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks.

Like #57, after a series of failed connection attempts I later found my Nexus 5 completely locked up, and had to power it off by holding the power button. This is the only time in the past year that I can recall having to force a power down.

My experience is, Wifi will connect, however the GCM keeps get disconnected. it will work when you disconnect and connect again. if you keep it on. it will work the first 5-10 minutes. After that, GCM connection will be disconnected.

You will not get any notification from Google. such as "email push", hangout "push".

i have yet to try the different channel solution, but will give it a go later.

Nexus 7 2013 OTA update to Lollipop Build LRX21P

Received similar wifi connection failures as described above.

When looking into the logs I noticed that the wifi connection seemed to fail on obtaining an IP address from my home routers DHCP server. I had no issues with this on KitKat 4.4.4 (or lower) whatsoever.

Anyway, after seeing this I set a fixed IP address for the wifi connection and the next second it just worked!!

Snippet from the log (not sure if this gives any relevant hints):

D/wpa_supplicant(11330): wlan0: Control interface command 'SET ps 1'

D/wpa_supplicant(11330): CTRL_IFACE SET 'ps'='1'

D/wpa_supplicant(11330): nl80211: set_p2p_powersave (legacy_ps=1 opp_ps=-1 ctwindow=-1)

D/WifiNative-wlan0( 546): SET ps 1: returned true

D/WifiNative-wlan0( 546): doBoolean: DRIVER BTCOEXMODE 2

D/wpa_supplicant(11330): wlan0: Control interface command 'DRIVER BTCOEXMODE 2'

D/wpa_supplicant(11330): wpa_driver_nl80211_driver_cmd BTCOEXMODE 2 len = 0, 12

I use both the 5 & the 7 as wifi ONLY devices and won't even think about loading 5.0 until this is fixed...

I side loaded to my nexus 4 and have the same issue as #66. WiFi fails or is slow to connect. Settings freezes with a black screen or crashes.

If you don't have the developer preview, which means having upgraded with OTA/sideloading or using factory images, please post here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=78702

Hi #73 - I got LRX210 on my Nexus 5 today via OTA. This was not side loaded. Also note that I am having trouble connecting to my work network. But my home network and some other wifis do not have any issues. Looks like problem with AES wifi.

I sideloaded the OTA factory image on Friday and have had a wifi connection issue too. I'm running build LRX210 on a Nexus 5.

I can connect to wifi networks, but once I'm disconnected after getting out of range I get an "authentication problem" error message when I try to reconnect. Forgetting the network and re-entering credentials allows me to reconnect, but it's very irritating to do that many times a day at work.

I am also seeing this same behavior at home connecting to a 5GHz 802.11ac network. It looks like the wifi network at work is using EAP security.

Please fix this bug ASAP.

Hi,

You can try the fix presented in #60 in:

https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=78702

That solved my problem. I can finally use Lollipop on my Nexus5.
