What is the expected output? What do you see instead? I should be able use a shortcut, like F4 to stop start the media file.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system? MacBook Air OSX Yosemite

You can use the F1-F12 keys, but in combination with either the "ctrl", "alt" or "cmd"-key. So the shortcut would then be "ctrl", "alt" or "cmd" + "fn" + "F1-12".
