I use version 0.8-2 from Debian Wheezy.

Can you please consider not adding file name extension ".lock" or make it optional? The way of adding it silently looks like Windows style for me and when I call with path="/var/run/my_app.lock" it creates /var/run/my_app.lock.lock instead.
