"Checking for database updates". I have tried restarting my phone, re-installing the app, and clearing the data. Nothing seems to fix the issue

Good to hear it worked itself out. Did you submit a crash report?

That notification is doing exactly what it says. By default it checks every three days for new cards, starting from when you install the app. It's quicker to update cards that way than through the Play Store.
