I am sure there must be an additional condition, we can add it to the description once identified. Event log is a first attempt at identifying it.

Just to be clear, I am running Miranda 0.9.14, and installing that was no problem, apart from the License agreement not showing, and the install location only after clicking into the box. Those problems go back several versions (several months, as long as I've been on Win7) and are not unique to Miranda either.

Running the installer as administrator does not change anything.

Well, you need to find it, as you are the only person having access to your computer. Installer works just fine for everybody else ...

Check your antivirus, it often treats NSIS as a virus...

If that's all the reaction I get I'll conclude that filing issues here is useless.

But maybe someone else has a suggestion what to look for.

Nu suggestion, it works fine here on Windows 7 for me as well...

You said "are not unique to Miranda either" so why do you think its bug in Miranda?

What is not unique to Miranda is that the installer - doesn't show the license - only shows the installation path after clicking in the box

I've seen this effect in one or two other installers that look very similar to the Miranda installer, so maybe they are using the same libraries. I don't mean that it is a very common problem (I install dozens of applications).

What is unique to the Miranda 0.9.16 installer is that it - "stops working" later in the process and thus doesn't install

Again, this was not the case with 0.9.14.

Also, there is no problem with Miranda itself; I checked now that the 7-zipped version works on my machine. But I will stay with 0.9.14 for now rather than messing something up by doing a manual update.

The install worked after closing other applications. A little experimentation seems to indicate that Firefox being open was the problem (at least, it alone causes the problem, but other applications might do the same).

Sorry, this kind of issue has become rare, but I should have tried when the install didn't work. Maybe you want to include the standard recommendation, as a reminder.
