huggle - issue #151

What Huggle needs to do and what MediaWiki is designed for are not the same

Posted on Jan 15, 2009 by Happy Dog

Wikimedia high-traffic, mostly read-only websites => MediaWiki wiki engine designed for same => MediaWiki database schema designed for same => MediaWiki API limited to selection of efficient queries => Huggle limited to API queries => Huggle features limited by available information => Some things that would be useful are not possible

Possible solutions:

  • Rewrite MediaWiki: I don't have the time, knowledge or resources
  • Ask for new API additions: They get wontfix'd
  • Get the information anyway by flooding the API with requests: Users complain of slowness, devs track me down and murder me in my sleep
  • Fake the information from incomplete data: Works some of the time in some places, but not all the time or everywhere.
  • Do without the information: Users continue to do stupid things, blame software, insist on feature anyway
