gst-editor - issue #5

What's the future of gst-editor as XML support in GStreamer is deprecated

Posted on Aug 11, 2010 by Helpful Giraffe

Since GStreamer developers have deprecated XML support, and it will be removed in the future (0.11), what is the future of gst-editor? Will it cease to be functional, or will it create its own XML format?

Good question, my plan is to extract the xml-based code from the 0.10-series and pack it into an external library that will be included in the gst-editor-package. This will make it even easier for me to fix bugs/apply changes needed.(e.g. dont restore elements inside playbin, save "sometimes"-connections) Some months ago I already had a look at the libraries and it seemed doable to have these functions external from the core as they also just use the "public" functions. The possibility for elements to provide custom store/load-functions will be gone - anyway no element I know ever uses them.

I need to see what changes 0.11/1.0 will bring to make a clear statement about the future of gst-editor. Gtk 3.0 compatibility will also be an issue.

The bigger problem is the lack of time that I have...but I am quite confident to keep gst-editor working and even enhance it slowly.
