grub4dos-chenall - issue #57

Grub4DOS can't map a non-contiguous fixed VHD

Posted on Dec 6, 2011 by Massive Monkey

What steps will reproduce the problem? 1. Create a fixed Win7 Ultimate VHD on a limited space partition 2. Install OS on it in a VM or apply with ImageX 3. Try map (can't --mem since the file is too big for available RAM) and boot it with Grub4DOS

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

It should boot similar to booting it natively. Instead G4D pop-ups error: the VHD disk must be contiguous.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

current G4D on Win7 Ult

Please provide any additional information below.

Is it possible to fix this? The reason is, VHDs are quite often transferred to a USB Thumb to run portable, where space is limited, and not always possible to copy it as a contiguous file, while frequently defragging a Thumb is not recommended.

Non-contiguous images are not supported yet. And it is rather hard to support non-contiguous image mapping. So close this issue for now.
