It would be useful if the icon on Springboard has got the marker that shows hom many unread news there are.

Wanted to add as a feature request an icon on the status bar (next to the battery, WiFi, etc)

But it hink it's better to made it optional the status bar one :)

i think the status bar one is a bit much (and probably hard), but the springboard badge is a good idea. i'll look into it.
