google-maps-icons - issue #299

Slow download on Chrome

Posted on Jan 2, 2011 by Helpful Elephant

Hi, only just found google maps icons today, brilliant and thanks.

Can anyone help me with solving a strange problem? Developing my own site and using your icons (rather than standard Google ones) for the first time, the map pages with yours on are downloading significantly slower than pages with the standard ones - but only on Chrome. Seems OK on IE. Any idea why or how to remove the problem?

Hi,

Sorry, but we only make the icons, Google both own and maintain the server we host them on and obviously both Google Maps and Chrome. Should work fantastically well, right? I use Firefox mostly so I have not noticed this behavior. Where is the site you are developing so that I can test it as well?

Kind Regards,

Matthias

Hi Matthias, thanks for your response. Yes, you make a fair point about ownership. The site is still in development but if you go to www.sportcloseup.co.uk/devand then to the geographical menu down the left - click on London and you should see what I mean - 'loading' flashes up and stays for about 30 seconds, affecting the appearance of the pins if you click on them too, whereas with ordinary Google pins (used for instance on Midlands), the download time is zero. It doesn't matter if you put one of your pins on a map or twenty- leads to the same delay. Take them off and replace with ordinary ones and all back to normal. Yes, agree no problem with IE and Firefox. Odd. Grateful for any solution! Regards, John

Hi John,

I found the page, and I have now tested it in FF 3.6.8, IE 6.0 (yes, old) and Chrome 7.0.517.44 installed on my work desktop computer and the performance of the London page map icons is more or less the same. I have no 30 sec delay in the Chrome browser, it's just a couple of seconds, the same as in the other 2. You should perhaps also try it from another computer? Seems like this is a problem on your browser? Hope this helps.

Regards,

Matthias

This is really strange. I have uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it and the problem is still there. Its v8.something. I have tried it on a different computer and again it it still there. I don't know if this could be a problem with this version of Chrome. I'll try and contact Google to find out but thanks for your efforts. Regards, John

Matthias When you tested this, did you just open that page, or did you actually click on any of the pins on the map? I ask because sometimes it does not show 'loading' until you do click, although it is doing it, so you might not have seen the problem. I have now tried it on a third PC with Chrome 8 and the same problem is there. John

Hi John,

OK, no I just saw the icons loading, I didn't click and when I do that now I also get the long "loading2. Once again our icon have absolutely nothing to do with this. It's just a small picture, and those load as they should.

My guess is that the "loading" has to do with the picture/video you have embedded in the pop-up description. It just shows as a black square in both FF and Chrome for me. Try to remove that and see what happens.

Once again, this is not a problem with our icons, you really should go to the Chrome or Google Maps forums and ask around.

Happy hunting!

//Matthias

Thanks. No, have cleared one map completely and just put in one icon (with only name, no other content), first of standard type, then one of yours - and it happens again. Posted question on Chrome help but no-one has responded, either Chrome or other users. Don't know what is going on.....

Hi, I emailed you last month with my problems about slow downloads on Chrome. A query - am I allowed to host icons on my own site's server, so I can see if the problem goes away - and, if it does, do the same with all the ones I want?, And the credit / link that is required. Does that need to be on every page with a map, or just somewhere on the site once, like in Terms and Conditions? Or could we compromise and put it in selected, but not all, pop-up boxes on the maps?, Grateful for your guidance. John

Hello John

Of course, you are allowed to host the icons on your server. The credit / link that is required : somewhere on the site, FAQ/credits/legal page is nice.

Same issue here. 30+ seconds on Chrome (PC and Mac). Fast load on other browsers (PC and Mac). Really seems like a glitch in Chrome.

DO you have a live example of your maps so that I can test on Chrome ?

Well I can see Chrome is a lot slower.

But it happens with the default Google icons too.

Note : this project is not affiliated with Google nor Google Maps, so you can't do anything. Please check Google Maps help or forums pages.

Thanks, Nico ... realized a bit late that your project wasn't associated. As an aside, as soon as we replace our icons with the stock icons ... all the icons load quickly.

There is an existing thread on this topic. Everyone seems to be having the same issue. Custom pins loading slowly only in Chrome. Give this thread a bump so we'll better our chances of a solution.
