earth-issues - issue #1501

Satellite images not drawn on surface

Posted on Nov 21, 2012 by Happy Dog

1. Google Earth Version: 7.0.1.8244

  1. Operating System: Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS)

3. Summary of issue (including error messages): No satellite images drown on the surface of the globe.

4. Links to other posts about this issue (please don't repost bugs): There are other reports of the same issue in the Google Product Forum: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/earth/dlzBfGl4eKM/kI3Simv6eWIJ

5. Reproduction Steps: Start program, select layer, zoom.

6. What is the expected output or behavior? What do you see instead? Instead of the satellite images of the earth's surface I only see a gray area (when close to surface) or the earth is transparent with only the borders showing.

7. Workaround (if you've found one) I don't know about any workaround.

The bug appears on 32bit and 64bit systems as reported here: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/earth/dlzBfGl4eKM/kI3Simv6eWIJ

The same for me: when I install libGL.so.1 (as mentioned in other posts) to /opt/google/earth/free the behaviour is the same as described above. Without that lib GE crashes on start.

Kubuntu 12.04, 32-bit

GE 6.2 works without problems.

Same here, Kubuntu 12.04 LTS 32 bits Video card is an onboard Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02). Are yours intel too? There have been google earth issues before with intel integrated video cards. All packages up to date as of Dec 13 2012.

happens for me as well, globe stays transparent, thats for both Mars and Earth.

This is with an AMD graphics card using Debian Testing install. version 6.2 worked well and I will probably downgrade again.

Issue still appears with google-earth-stable-7.0.2.8415-0.x86_64 on Fedora 17 on Dell Optiplex 990 behind proxy. Previous version was working (w/o panoramino images).

Issue same over here, Tried both on Fedora 17, nvidia geforce 6150SE GPU with nouveau driver and ubuntu 12.04 32 bit on a dell laptop (dell latitude D620). Both have exactly the same issue : google earth works except for the images. All border lines, place names, panoramio pictures etc... are visible but no sattelite images, all is black instead.

My workaround in both cases has been installing the previous version from the GoogleEarthLinux.bin file, although this was also with issues. Installing from the bin file gave me an error saying that some ">" was missing.... again, this happenend on both abovementioned systems and OS

Workaround for that issue was :

./GoogleEarthLinux.bin --.target /tmp/GE
(ignore error msg and do following commands) cd /tmp/GE/setup.data/bin/Linux/x86 (for the 64bit x86-64) mv setup.gtk setup.gtk2 cd /tmp/GE ./setup.sh

I had the same problem with openSuse 12.2 - no satellite images, no error messages. It was resolved by installing the Mesa-32bit library (hint on a Linux forum). :-)

I had the same issue on Fedora 18, 64 bit.

Installing the 32 bit mesa libraries fixed the issue. I used this command (note that it is installing too many packages): yum install mesa*.i686

Exactly which mesa packages do you have installed? I have these (kubuntu), and the problem is still there: libegl1-mesa:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libegl1-mesa-drivers:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libgl1-mesa-dev 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libglapi-mesa:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libglu1-mesa:i386 9.0.0-0ubuntu1 libglu1-mesa-dev 9.0.0-0ubuntu1 libglw1-mesa 7.4-0ubuntu2 libopenvg1-mesa:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 libosmesa6:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 mesa-common-dev 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1

uninstalling 7.0 and installing the last version 7.1.1.1580 (beta) did the trick for me. It works again.

ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS / 64bit

I had the same problems with no sattelite images and only yellow borders. I turned of texture compression in tools and this fixed a problem for me.

Linux Mint 15 x86_64, GeForce 9700GT with 331.20 drivers; Google Earth (64-bit) 7.1.2.2041

I was experiencing a crash on the 64 bit version, while installing the 32 bit version didn't crash but suffered from the no satellite data issue (just points and vectors). What fixed it for me is Tools -> Options -> 3d view tab, under Texture Colors uncheck Compress checkbox and apply the change, then all the imagery showed up again. Haven't tried running 64 bit again yet with these setttings to see if it still crashes.
