This needs to be fixed. Not being able to accept meeting notices sent from Outlook
on phone is bad. The work-around is to accept them using the googlemail website, but
this should be added to the googlemail android client so it can all be done phone
side.

This would be very useful - all the more so as a phone is the last place you want to
be typing in numerous pre-existing details when the phone could do the work for you.
Facebook have an export for .ics files, which I'd find handy if they could go
straight into the calendar.
These .ics files come up everywhere - it would be good to focus on making the file
association work (at an O/S level) rather than any interception directly within
Googlemail, since there will be cases where a file is obtained on the phone (eg from
the browser or some other process, like file sync) and there's no point in demanding
all those apps replicate the functionality when it can be done once and work across
the board.

Kind of silly for Google to develop a phone operating system which does not have the ability to accept invites
from Google Calendar.
This is an important feature - please fix it!
Otherwise Android is great, if one is clever enough to find work-arounds for not being able to email file
attachments other than pictures (it can be done through file manager programs.)

Seriously a medium priority? I have a new sprint Hero and am loving it so far, but i
just recieved 3 invites/ics files in my gmail this morning and was unable to accept,
add to my calendar or do anything with them, except of course save them to my SD
card. Still couldn't open it after that. Thisd caused a ton of confucion becuase i
could not respond to the invites for 1 hour until i got to my PC and people were
boking over each other, etc.
This is critical to anyone that uses this OS for work. This would seem like a
MASSIVE oversight to me.

I can't believe this is still not possible. I'm going to have to go back to my

to go back to a computer and accept the appointments. This feature is available on

I just went and bought a Moto Droid this morning in *an attempt* to switch off of my
Blackberry, which I use VERY heavily for work -- sometimes not being able to get in
front of my PC for days at a time.
Within minutes of setting up the Droid (nice & easy, btw), I found this major
limitation. It may be a dealbreaker. This makes the phone unusable for business.
I'm going to keep searching for a workaround, but if I can't find one, I'm taking the

Shame on me for assuming a basic function of a smartphone (found on ever other

(Possible solution for Exchange)
I got an invitation yesterday at my corporate (MS Exchange) account on my Moto Droid.
I went and looked on the calendar at that time slot, and it was there. I then
opened the calendar item, and there was a drop-down inside the event that allowed me
to accept / decline / tentatively accept the invitation.
Would be nice to be able to do it directly from the invitation, but it appears that
the Android design point is to have calendar items managed from the calendar.
Motorola / Google, please update your documentation to explain this feature to users
of corporate email accounts.

Here are some notes from Verizon regarding Droid issues, looks like there are some
fixes planned:
Exchange Active Sync Email: You cannot accept a calendar appointment received via email.
Short term work around: The customer can accept or decline the meeting invite by
accessing it under the Corporate Calendar application.
Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue will be included in a maintenance release of
software for this device. The target date for the next release of software is January
22, 2010.
Exchange Active Sync/Google Mail: Messages sent from the A855 only support picture
attachments, no other types of attachments are supported.

FYI, with my HTC Hero when you get invited to a meeting or forward the invite to your
gmail account, the Hero calendar app will automatically add the event to your Hero
calendar so at least you won't miss the reminder and will have the info for the event.
But I don't see any documentation on this magic feature.
BTW, this page doesn't work from the Google browser on my Hero. Posting the comment
results in a 'content-length is required for POST data' or similar. Lame Google!

Isn't it really amazing that I have read at least a dozen reviews of the Moto Droid
from so-called journalists and various bloggers that received advanced copies of the
phone, and NOT ONE, covered this issue and the other broken mail feature (inability
to undelete an email from corporate or IMAP accounts)? Not One.
Makes you wonder what else they might be receiving under the table.
Given Google's position in the free email marketplace, they ought to be ashamed at
letting this defect persist as long as it has. Shame, shame on you big G.

Not being able to read ICS attachments is a major problem. This makes the device
useless for participation in most real business environment. The only workaround that
I know about is to call the sender and ask them to send the invite as inline text
(versus ICS attachment). This needs to be fixed (or realistic workaround offered).

It is a free 14 day trial, then $9.99 for an unlock key. On the DataViz website
they have a long list of hardware supported.

The Road Sync. App seems to be a good fix to the issue of not being able to integrate
your corporate calendar with e-mails, however, what lacks with this client is the fact
that it only syncs your inbox and not any other folders you have within your inbox. I
guess if you have both e-mail clients running, the Android Corporate E-mail client and
the Road Sync e-mail client, then you'd be OK. This is kind of a ridiculous work
around though, hopefully its only until Jan 22.

There is going to be a swarm of DROID returns if this isn't fixed before the 30-day trial

Hi Mr. Matz,
Thank you so much for the kind feedback! I'm expecting to charge $3 for the full
version. I'm not looking to take anyone for a ride, just to get compensated for the
time I spent on the app...
Unfortunately, I don't control the text of the "Done" and "Revert" buttons - I
actually call that portion of the screen from the native Calendar app. Perhaps a
future release of the native app will let me modify those button names...
I do hope in the future to have an option where it will allow you to properly reply
to the event as you described, but I just moved two days ago, and haven't had time to
do that (also why the website isn't quite right yet either).
Again, thanks for the compliment, and enjoy the app!

Hi All!
First, I would like to thank those of you who have been kind enough to give me good
reviews and speak kind words.
I uploaded an update to iCalMgr Trial that is compiled to work with both 1.5 SDK as
well as the new 2.0.1 SDK. It also now reacts to a few more calendar Mime types that
I missed before.
You can download it by pointing your browser to
market://search?q=pname:com.treodroid.iCalMgr
Or can scan the QR Code at
http://bit.ly/4TUvaG
I hope to be updating thewww.treodroid.com website before the weekend is out...
I also have released a vCard manager that will allow you to open vCards directly
from your EMail and automatically create the contact record.
Again, thanks all!

So no that we know it's possible based on jholstein's work, refine his code and
implement it in the Android Gmail app before he starts charging your customers for
something that clearly should be free. Sorry jholstein, but there's no way you should
be making any money off of this, especially when we have to use someone else's app to
take advantage of it. I could see if you coded a whole new email app that has this
functionality in it, but you want to charge for a plugin for someone else's app?? An
app that is free by the way. Maybe K9 should refine your code and implement it. I
think you should have put it on your own site and took donations. It's quite a slap
in the face to opensource and the Android platform that you think you should charge
for this.

I too agree that Google should have developed this and implemented in Android by at
least 2.0, and there are a whole host of other Mail App failures to go along with
this issue. However, I also think it is petty and small of people to complain about
being charged a very small fee for add-ons that greatly increases the functionality
of their phones. JHolstien and others put in the work, have added significant value
and they have every right to ask for modest compensation.
I left the very polished Blackberry platform to give Android a try, and had it not
been for the work of developers like jholstein that have contributed to making the
Droid's messaging features business ready, I would have returned mine. I am sure I am
not alone in this assessment, and their work has contributed to building market share
for the Android platform which in the end is good for all Android fans.
Stop bitching and either develop your own FREE software, or go get a freaking life.
So far I have paid for at least 3 modestly priced apps that increase the usability
and functionality of my beloved Droid and I thank the developers that produced this
code, while I patiently wait for Google to clean up their act.

I absolutely agree with somertech.droid. I personally find nothing wrong with paying
a few bucks for a feature that I need very badly at my startup that doesn't have much
IT infrastructure in place. If you don't like it, simply don't download and bitch at
Google instead. And wait. And wait.

The difference is that Blackberry is a closed platform, Android is opensource. They
give you the SDK so that you can enhance what they have done. Like I said though, if he
coded a whole new app I might consider it worth paying for, but all he did what make a
plugin for the K9 email app. They coded a very robust email client and it's still free,
it seems wrong for him to charge a for a plugin.

Yesterday I went to the Verizon store for the 3rd time since the Droid was released
and for the 3rd time it was recommended I don't buy it. This is so frustrating
since I really like the Verizon service in my area. No one in the store has any
clue how to handle syncing with Microsoft Exchange. It's shocking how little anyone
cares about this, especially at Verizon or Google. Needless to say, I hate the
blackberry storm and I am going to switch my service to AT&T today and get an
Iphone. I waited and waited for this product and can't believe a representative
from Google has not got on this thread and told us how to make this work. I'm not a
techie, nor do I want to be. I asked one of the more tech saavy people at the
Verizon store what to do about this and he said." I heard there are some apps for
that but the free ones don't work too well."
??? The point is to make everything easier and more accessible to the consumer...

The DROID syncs fine with Exchange via ActiveSync, you get calendar, contacts and
emails (no todos, however).
You cannot accept exchange calendar invitations from the email app, but, you *can* go
to the corporate calendar application and accept the invitation from there!

ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #91
The Droid DOES NOT sync "fine" with ActiveSync for the following reasons:
- frequently, replies or forwards get stuck in the Outbox. Motorola level 2 support
told me directly that the only way to fix this was to delete the email and resend.
if this doesn't work, you have to wipe your account off the handheld and re-register
ActiveSync.
- Often, calendar invitations come into the inbox with no content in the body of the
invite, so even if I wanted to go to the calendar to accept the meeting, I have no
way of knowing the time & date of the meeting to do so.
- There are an unacceptable number of times the device is unable to connect to
ActiveSync. I'm not sure if this is a network issue or just a testament to the
ActiveSync interface being less than robust.
In addition, I have a long list of gripes, not the least of which is the difficulty
(impossibility in some cases) of copy / paste, especially copying a section out of a
received email (can't copy more than one line).
Suffice it to say, I REALLY MISS MY BLACKBERRY. I work on the road a lot, and have
very time-sensitive business to handle. There's too much missing with basic Android
functionality for it to be a viable business platform yet, IMHO.

It's terribly disappointing that a company that thrives on concepts like cloud computing and works for
full integration of all its platforms is so tragically underdeveloped when it somes to simple things
like ical, and even .ivc. If we can easily send events and contact information in those formats using
the base functionality of the device, how is it that we can't open them?? I really feel this issue is egg

It is ridiculous that an OS created by google which supports sync to gmail and google
calendar cannot handle a request sent. The web client shows the request properly but
not the "fat" client on the phone. This is my only gripe so far with my droid and
luckily I dont use the calendar that much, mainly just a personal calendar, but on
the occasions where invitations are sent out it makes it a real pain. This should
not be treated as an enhancement, it should be considered a bug in the software as it
fails to natively support a feature of the emailing/calendering systems google has.

The issue is simple. It is a way for Google to further invade our privacy by having to give them our calendars to
make them useful to us. If you don't, you are stuck with a locked in local organizer circa 1980.
Not really an "open" system.

Oh come on guys! Are you serious? No support for calendar events? I just received my
new HTC Hero for my birthday last night. I've been in love with my Blackberry and
didn't like the idea of a new phone. But I gave it a try and loved the new Android
phone UNTIL my office sent me a calendar event changing the time and location of a
business meeting I was to have this morning. And guess what? Not only did it not
autoadd to my calendar, I didn't have an option to ACCEPT nor was I able to view any
information within the sent calendar event.
This is not acceptable. Who do you think is shelling out money for these new phones?

This was reported in 2008 as an enhancement but it really is a necessity.
I don't have proper access to my calendars. The only way possible is if I
completely switch to google calendar. My other family members have I phones but I
went with Android because I do not like the idea of the control Apple has on the
Iphone apps and Android is supposed to be open. If the only way for me to use this
vital function is to switch to google then Google is no different than Apple.
The Iphone I know works well with the basic vital functions eg Email, Calendar,
Contacts. I will stick with Android for now as it is newer on the market and has
potential but many have already become frustrated with the lack of full basic
functionality that they are switching.

How can this be a Medium priority ??
Would have bought some other phone if I had known earlier that these basic features are not supported !!

Issue has been open since late 2008, and we are half way done with 2010 and no resolution. Accepting invites and adding it to a calender should be a top priority not a medium one. Please, please, please someone get this working.

Just discovered this issue. Being a blackberry user I forgot how crucial a feature this was until I made the switch to android. I took this for granted on my blackberry. How will android be taken seriously by the business world if they can't handle simple business like tasks? I have an HTC EVO and have switched to using the HTC mail client as that allows importing items to the calendar, but without push notifications, I'm not sure what this will do to my battery life.
ke...@gmail.com <ke...@gmail.com> #134
I really need to have android import ics documents... as well as group ics files such as ones created by ical
sc...@gmail.com <sc...@gmail.com> #135
This is becoming absurd. The very basic feature: to be able to accept meeting invitations from outlook and gmail calendars. Unfortunately, google is imitating the same disgraceful behavior of microsoft - putting politics before customer service (outlook support) and ignoring basics (supporting its own calendar, jesus) while developing cool but less important features.
We are seriously considering to move all our employees from android to blackberry or iphone. i hear it from other companies. without the above it is obvious that the android is useless for business.

Google - not having support for iCal is ridiculous.
Everyone: Let's coordinate our efforts.
Please go to the issue below and add a star to indicate how important having iCal support is to the market:

Wow... nice to see I'm not the only "crazy" one who doesn't get all the fuss about the Android. I had a BB Storm up until August 5th where I "upgraded" to the Samsung Moment. At first I was mesmerized by the bells-and-whistles and fluid screen movement, however the 1) lack of ics support, 2) lack of Google task synchronization, 3) insanely low battery life... I'm completely disenchanted with this phone. Not to mention, there have been pleas from a loyal fan base to Google to address these issues for years!... "Let them eat cake". I have a business to run.
Bummer... I have to go back to Blackberry at the tail end of my trial period because this phone, well, sucks. I'm headed for the life rafts. Good luck everyone.

WILL THE GMAIL APP SUPPORT ICS OR WILL YAHOO APP SUPPORT THE CALENDER. I WONDER.
OR WILL COMPETITION SQUASH THIS AS OPPOSED TO MAKE IT MORE COMPATABLE.

About 2 years later and still not able to open meeting requests?
It is extremely disappointing that something as basic as calendar is not even possible on an android phone.
Basically, you are never going to get any blackberry or corporate user without this functionalty. What are you waiting for to implement it?

Hey guys I am not sure if this will help you but I too had the same problem I downloaded the app from the market called ICS-Bot and it reads the attachment coming in. I am not sure what email account you are using but what I did was have any emails going to my corporate or/pop3 account from my work and I set a rule up that will forward any email with the subject titled Meeting in it and have it forwarded to my gmail account and once it arrives it will be read as an .ics file where you can preview it and set it up on your calendar. The downside is that you cannot edit or send a response back but you can inout the event onto your calendar and set reminders, I know it is not what we want but at least you have the event in your calendar, hope this helps.

I will be posting this text in issues 2361, 1257, 2445 since they are all very related. I hope you will help you, I had a really rough couple of days getting the android to work the way I needed.
Guide to a Happy Androidian
I am the proud owner of a Android Galaxy S Epic 4G phone. But like me, most of you have (specially the ones coming from the Blackberry World) been struggling with email, notifications, invites , etc.
So I wrote this little guide with my experience, testing and results.
Currently I am very happy with my current setup, feels just like a darn Smartphone!
I am assuming most of us have a basic-moderate level knowledge of IT, so I will not details the how-to of the steps taken, but will be happy to reply to any post if you get stuck.
Issue#1 Push eMail for non-Gmail POP accounts
Other than Gmail account or Exchange servers, the android needs to poll emails out of the POP server on an scheduled time interval (From now on will call this POP Account ORG_POP; [username]@[mycompany].com). This is not efficient plus consumes too much battery, and we all need every bit!
Solution
1. Create a new Gmail account for your company POP mail. This will give you sync and push capabilities (Will call this NEW_GPOP); I named mine : [companyname].work@gmail.com
2. In the Gmail settings, tell Gmail to Check mail using POP3: specify your ORG_POP account
3. In the Gmail settings, tell Gmail to send mail as: specify your ORG_POP account.
For Android
Sync NEW_GPOP with Android. Note: adding a second account will sometimes create an error (cannot connect to server) on the Android, instead of adding the regular way, log in to YouTube from your Android phone with NEW_GPOP, this will create the new account. (don't ask me why!)
For Outlook
After you have your account setup in Gmail, go to Outlook and add a new email account that connects to NEW_GPOP. You can use the automatic changes. After all is done go to 'More Settings' and under the General tab, specify the reply email to be ORG_POP.
You can still sync with ORG_POP if you like, just remember to leave a copy on the server from NEW_GPOP.
I will recommend not adding LABELED filters to ORG_POP if you also want Outlook to retrieve the message. Not sure, but I am under the impression that Outlook will not retrieve it if it is sitting in a labeled folder (unless you are using IMAP with outlook).
What you get:
1. Push capabilities on your ORG_POP email, no need to sync, poll or wait for emails. (all PUSH for android and outlook)
2. Ability to send email under your ORG_POP email from Gmail , android and outlook, showing your ORG_POP as the reply to address.
3. Ability to keep copies (or delete them) in any of the three clients.
NEW_GPOP will work as a 'transport' mailer. You do not need to reference this email to the outside world (only if you want to), this will only be your account to log and manage your POP(s) account(s).
Personal Note:
You can add multiple POP email address to NEW_GPOP account, to another existing Gmail account (filters with labels if you like) or create new email for each POP email address you want to sync. It all comes down to your organization methodology.
I am sure you could do this with any mail client on the Android, I prefer Gmail since I believe is it simpler and has better integration with Gmail.
I can now manage all my work emails in just one place. If I work for multiple companies and they assign me each one different email, I can compile them all together into my NEW_GPOP and label them individually (or not).
If I go for vacation, I go to Google and set an automatic response and any email from work will be auto-replied.
Since NEW_GPOP is POLLING the emails from ORG_POP this is not done instantly, depending on the server or how Gmail performs the scheduled polls, you will receive the emails between 1-5m (in my experience).
Another way to make the emails get faster to your NEW_GPOP is to log into your ORG_POP account and tell the server to Forward the emails to NEW_GPOP. This will PUSH the email from ORG_POP to NEW_GPOP instantly and then NEW_GPOP will PUSH it to your android or outlook. It might look redundant, but if you Forward and Delete, then NEW_GPOP will get the email (a few seconds in my experience) and will find nothing the next time it tries to POLL from ORG_POP. Then a few seconds later I get the email on my Android.
Issue#2 Receiving/Accepting meeting invites on your Android
If you did follow the setup for issue 36903750 , every time someone send you an invite to NEW_GPOP (meeting invite to NEW_GPOP email) Google will automatically add it to your calendar. This is great if you are giving away your NEW_GPOP email address, but if you receive email via the ORG_POP address, Google will stop the Quick Calendar entry and wait until you manually create the entry.
For some weird and mystic reason, Google decided not to include meeting invites in their Gmail account other than meeting submitted to a GMAIL account. If you receive an invite and you open Gmail on your PC, you will see the invite as a calendar option and insert it into Google calendar. Yes, if you accept it on Gmail on your PC, it will sync with the Android and show in your Android calendar. So, why not do this automatically for the ORG_POP account on the Android or Gmail??! ... Easy fix!
Solution
1. On Gmail, click Settings, Google Account Settings.
2. Under Personal Settings>>Emails, click Edit and add your ORG_POP.
3. Confirm Verification. Done!
BTW: while you are in the account settings, select Multiple Sign-in. Will be easier to manage all your Google accounts.
What you get:
All your invites sent to your ORG_POP will AUTOMATICALLY be included into the Google Calendar. I tested invites from Gmail, Yahoo and Outlook Calendars.
This is because Gmail now recognizes that ORG_POP is now an email address that belongs to you. Regularly when invites are sent, it is addressed to many emails. Gmail will not include entries on your calendar because it does not recognize ORG_POP as part your account emails.
There is a catch! the entry will be recorded in your calendar using the NEW_GPOP address (yup, too good to be true). This means that if you reply or change the event the new reply-to address will be NEW_GPOP not ORG_POP. I think if you reply with GMAIL not GCALENDAR the reply will remain ORG_POP, but need to try this.
Personal Note:
I have only test the ability to receive them automatically into the calendar. have partially tested (with good results):
1. Replying Yes, No, Maybe from Gmail or Android
2. Canceling or moving to another time.
I guess they will all work well since it is already within Gmail, but will try this later.
I only see a problem with this. Outlook.
Some invites will arrive as emails with an ics attachment, This is not a problem, Outlook will not add it to your calendar at this point. But when you get an standard Outlook invite from another Outlook client, yours will receive it as an invite and add it to the calendar.
For some people this might be good or bad. for me is bad. If you don't have a Sync client like (CompanionLink - I am testing the Trial Version) you will want to keep it in outlook so you can see the invite. But if you have an Sync client, the sync client will send to your Gmail account another copy of the invite, hence creating multiple copies.
To overcome my problem was a 2 step solution.
1. In Outlook, go to Options>>email options>>tracking options>>uncheck all checkboxes.
2. Create a new rule: "which is a meeting invitation or update">>"mark it as read">>"delete it"
That took care of my problem.
Now when I receive invite, they will stay in Gmail, they will be added to my Gmail calendar and then my sync client will retrieve them (in 5min) and add them to outlook calendar.
Also when I send invites from outlook the process will be the same but in reverse order.
Initiating the invite in the android will not be a problem, but it has it drawback (read my conclusion).
Alternative
Download from the Market: ICS Bot. This application will present you with the option of adding the calendar into your Android phone when you receive an invite with an ICS extension as an attachment.
Issue#3: Not Getting Gmail notification on Labeled and skip Invoice emails.
Some of us have filters in our inbox to properly manage our emails and organize them so we don't clutter the inbox. Gmail for Android will not notify you if you receive any of the emails that follow this filter criteria.
Solution
1. Download from the Market Gmail Label Notifier ($1.50)
2. Setup each label individually with notification and ringtone.
3. Setup Gmail on your Android to SYNC the specific label you want to get notified.
Personal Note:
I tried other apps without good success, confusing menus and double notifications (icons and sound) and also was not happy with the look and feel. Gmail Label Notifier gave me exactly what I need.
Make sure you are NOT archiving really important email, since the notifier seems to use the SYNC feature to get the emails and not a push from GMAIL. This means that the email might take longer to pop in your Smartphone (but not long).
Conclusion
I have to say I am very impressed about Google Integration between their apps. Definitely an Android user MUST have all his account in Gmail or at least polled or pushed into a Gmail account. Even Google Talk will notify me if someone canceled a meeting!
But at the same time I am disappointed at not seeing most of these issues already resolved or at least a viable workaround from Google to determine how to overcome some of these basic necessity problems.
Other Notes:
Sending Invites from Outlook
When creating invites or meeting from Outlook, you get the same transparency you will get from your original server. The attendee will receive something like this:
From: ORG_POP
To: xxxx@yahoo.com
This is good if you are only using your outlook desktop client to create meeting and manage them, but sometime you are on the run, need to reply, cancel or create a new meeting from the Android or Gmail and this is where I ran out of options to figure out a solution.
Sending Invites from Gmail or Android
In Gmail, when you click on any appointment, and see the WHO, you will see that Gmail is matching the invitee with your NEW_GPOP account. This is where I don't like the address that is sending the invite, there is no option to select which account is sending the invite or no option to default to my ORG_POP. Attendee will get something like this:
To:
xxxx@yahoo.com
Who: (Attendees)
1. NEW_GPOP@gmail.com - organizer
2. NEW_GPOP@gmail.com - creator (or PERSONAL@gmail.com, I shared my Work calendar)
3. xxxx@yahoo.com
I need this to be corrected to the following:
To:
xxxx@yahoo.com
Who: (Attendees)
1. ORG_POP [username]@[mycompany].com
2. xxxx@yahoo.com
First, it is creating one extra entry too and it is not specifying the ORG_POP address. When xxxx receives the email they will see that came from Gmail notmycompany.com . Although replying to this email will results in properly updating calendar information, it more of a question of ethics of showing the right address.
This is the only problem I have not been able to resolve, I will play more with gmail and see if there are settings that could help. For the mean time I am creating and setting up, replying and changing my appoint ONLY in outlook, although I can see them on my phone and Google calendar. Thankfully at the moment I am not getting many meeting requests.

When xxxx receives the email they will see that came from Gmail not
This is the only problem I have not been able to resolve, I will play more with gmail and see if there are settings that could help. For the mean time I am creating and setting up, replying and changing my appoint ONLY in outlook, although I can see them on my phone and Google calendar. Thankfully at the moment I am not getting many meeting requests.

While ICS-Bot works with iCal attachments in emails, there is still an issue with iCal files that are on websites (for example, the Federal Aviation Administration has iCal files for their seminars on their websites (e.g., http://www.faasafety.gov/SPANS/event_details.aspx?eid=36043&&caller=/WINGS/pub/accreditedactivities/activitySearch.aspx )
The Google browser on my Android phone doesn't download such files correctly.
I found that Firefox does, and with the Firefox and ICS-Bot combination, I was able to add this correctly. I am thinking about making Firefox my default browser on my phone...
Google has indeed dropped the ball on this issue.

ra...@gmail.com <ra...@gmail.com> #175
ICS Bot is still available. But it's not a perfect solution. I have a HTC Desire running CyanogenMod 7 nightly builds right now. When I open up a ICS file it does open up in ICS Bot but when I tell it to import the damn thing, the calendar process FC's. And even if it didn't, you'd still have to go back into the calendar and set reminders manually. It would be great if you could just open Gmail, open the ics, add it, and tweak options if necessary, without having to use other software than the standard Gmail and calendar apps.
I know it's free and all and it's bad form to expect someone solve your problems for free, but come on Google! This one is blatant and really should be fixed if you're looking to get into the corporate markets. Here at my company my suggestion we move from BB to Android was overturned and we migrated over to IPhone4 instead based in no small part on the fact that out Lotus Notes issues ics invites and IPhone worked with them. Android didn't.

This is quite possibly the lamest thing ever. A feature which Google's own e-mail client uses liberally, their own smartphone OS doesn't accept. ICS Bot works to import the iCal into your calendar, but FC's immediately after. I can't believe that Google is forcing us to rely on a 3rd party, non-Market app to solve a basic calendar functionality, with no word on any progress or even attempted progress.
bl...@gmail.com <bl...@gmail.com> #201
It's just not a glamorous topic but things like this are critical to machines working together and the eventual success or failure of a platform. Contacts, calendars, mail, to-do lists, copy and paste, text selection - all the things we were doing flawlessly in 1998 on our PDAs are still rough around the edges on Android. Customers may react most enthusiastically to "wow" features like 3D and updated UI chrome but there are a vast group of people who ARE watching the details, the basics, and we exert a lot of influence. Focus at least some resources on the basics.

If I am not mistaken, this issue just got worse since Gmail 2.3.5 which tightened security on the Android internal Gmail DB. This change effectively broke every hacked solution that I know of, not excluding ICS BOT.
So the second travesty is to have made these security changes before implementing ICS support.

Folks,
One thing to add - don't be so sure that the battery info reported by the battery stats screen is accurate.
I've twice had a sudden and significant battery drain on my Galaxy Nexus while it is in my pocket theoretically doing pretty much nothing. Once it drained from 80% to 12% in about 2 hours. The battery stats meter showed that 60% of that was due to the screen, but the screen was only on about a minute. I call BS on the battery stats meter.
My theory is that it's something that isn't being counted by the meter - the radio, one of the sleep issues, etc.
It may be that there is more than one issue at work here too. It is possible that Android OS issue is causing people trouble, as well as something else.

No doubt that Google's own business calendar solution has been the big disincentive for this feature never to happen.
cn...@gmail.com <cn...@gmail.com> #248
Regarding comment 249 above, issue 36907451 should not have been merged into this issue, it is NOT a duplicate, they are completely different issues.
Issue 36905952 is about handling .ics attachments to email messages.
Issue 36907451 is about syncing with an external CalDAV server.
Merging the two makes no sense at all.

Google, really, I find your lack of interest for the calendar issues appalling. (btw, the two issues are not the same as many have mentioned before!!).
I still cannot understand how it is possible that you handle calendar for Android in such a tasteless way. The only thing that prevents my company (and surely many others) of switching to Android is your lack of support for calendars. Very poor business sense when after 253 comments, you are completely unable to solve something as easy.
Please act.

Google needs a complete rethinking on calendaring. Calendar software is way to far complex than you might think at first. Apple is doing way better than MS in simplicity than MS, but MS had to meet the complex business requirement either. Come on Google, please show your ability.

If you sort all 21,299 issues listed at code.google.com , this issue 36905952 : Calendar should support opening iCal .ics files comes up in forth place. This issue is 42 months old. It has over 2,400 stars. And its status? "Waiting for Review" WTF?
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #254
I've been using Android for years (since the HTC Magic) and love it, but I've recently started to try to use it for business, but the lack of this feature kills it for me. I (as well as I'm sure many others) NEED to be able to quickly and easily respond to .ics requests on Android in order for it to be a viable business option. Google, I want to support Android, but without this feature being slickly integrated (and not through some clunky app-based workaround) I simply can't use it for business.

Adding my name again also. To be successful with small business and even big business iCal support is a must. This really should be implemented. This should have been available when the calendar and email apps were made available. My old BB that is 5 years old can handle iCal attachments and via SMS.

I don't get why this still has not been fixed. If anyone lives or works near a Google campus, get your Android friends together (and/or your hippie, jobless, Android-hating friends) and picket out front. Here are a couple sign ideas:
1. Sorry I'm late for the protest, I couldn't accept the meeting invite on my Android phone.
2. Naming a release Ice Cream Sandwich is not the same as supporting .ICS files. Fix your $#1+ Google.
3. Don't make me updatehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICalendar to fix the lie about Google support.
Seriously, Let's get creative here people. If you work for a magazine or newspaper, see if you can slip in a full-page plea to get this resolved. If your best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend knows this guy who knows this kid that works at google, get in touch with them and beg for some prioritization.
If you are married/dating someone that works at Google and you have a non G-Mail account (like Outlook or Notes) find a time when the won't be able to access GMail on a computer and send them a meeting invite titled "Meet Me for Hot Sex". If they ask when and where, tell them the info is in the invite.
This is the only real thorn in my Android-using side.

I blame the patent system:
Quote: "U.S. Patent No. 6,370,566 on "generating meeting requests and group scheduling from a mobile device"

This may also be the reason why Google has been hush on this issue. Yes, it sucks, but makes sense when you think about it.

Not to say there aren't other restrictions etc that might prevent this getting implemented.

I have very similar problems with battery life draining super fast and 30-50% going to 'Android OS' on my VZW Galaxy Nexus with Android OS 4.0.2. Is there any official news on this? I'm still within the money back period, and if I don't hear anything more about this, I'm going to have to return the device.

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to share with you my before and afters of my GNEX 4.0.2 battery stats. So I'm a pretty heavy user hands down, and this phone hasn't let me use it to it's potential. When I first got it I was only getting 4-5hrs. 10hrs max not touching it. *Note* Avast AV is not an issue at all and made little to no impact on battery use.
Out of box set up: 4-5hrs with 2 hours screen on time. 10 hours with 30 mins screen on.
Setup now: 5-8 hours with 1 hours screen on time. 2 days 20 mins screen off. *2 days is extremely light usage.
Settings now: NFC OFF, Wifi sleep: Only when connected, DATA off when not in use. 30% screen brightness. *switching data off was the biggest helper. even the 3g is eating my battery fairly quick.
My android OS is still being kept awake for majority of uptime =/ I have no idea what is causing it.

Yes, please make android OS more efficient as sleeping with the radios on. Airplane mode solves the battery drain issue for me, and being connected to a wifi network seems to solve it as well. But mobile networks appear to continually wakelock the cpu/system causing too much battery drain.
A built in sleep mode where the device can be programmed to do less or no network authentication and syncing would be helpful.

where did they come up with the battery life stats for this phone?
(Stand-by Up to 290 h (2G) / Up to 270 h (3G), Talk time Up to 17 h 40 min (2G) / Up to 8 h 20 min (3G))
Even with the most aggressive battery management policy (turning almost everything off) the phone's battery life isn't even close to this. Even with just sitting idle with 3G only the best you could hope for is about 15 - 20 hours of standby and maybe 4 1/2 - 5 hrs of talk. 270 hrs? No way.

I've had similar problems with my Nexus but stumbled upon something from someone claiming his Maps was always in his recent applications even after a clean reset. I drained the life of my battery, then charged it up and removed the update to Maps. I then did another power cycle and loan behold Maps wasn't on the recent applications list. I did a clean swipe of my phone today and haven't ran Maps yet so I am convinced the update for Maps is our culprit. Anyone else have similar results?

I am having the exact same problem; very high keep awake time (almost constantly awake) on a GSM Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.2. I have had the phone since December, but the problem just started last week. Before then, I was getting 3 days / charge with minimal usage, but now I can't get through a single day. I noticed today that when I go to Settings > Data usage, it hangs. When I try to submit a bug report, it still hangs! Someone else is having this problem (see here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=24611 ), so it might be worth a look to see if this is what's responsible.

My co-worker and I both got the Galaxy Nexus around the same time. Her's eats through battery life and mine does not. So we started comparing settings and usage. The big difference is the amount of battery used by "Cell standby" (in settings under Device select "Battery" to view). Her battery use from "Cell standby" was 36% while mine was 4% (big difference). We touched the "Cell standby" usage meter on each phone to view more details. We discovered the "Time without a signal" on her phone was 51% and on my phone was 0% (huge difference). Then, holding our phones side-by-side, we noticed that her 4G bars were gray while mine are blue (she had no signal!). We realized her phone was wasting battery by constantly searching for a cell signal. I remembered something a Verizon Wireless support technician had me do when I first got my phone because I had no 4g signal. I tried these steps on her phone, as follows:
1) While the phone is fully powered on, remove the battery. According to the technician, the phone must be powered on when you remove the battery for this to work.
2) Remove the 4G SIM card by pushing it further up into its metal sheath until you hear a click. Then, it will spring back and you can slide it out. According to the VW technician, do not touch the gold contact on the bottom of the card.
3) Wait about 30 seconds.
4) Slide the SIM card back into its sheath and push it in until you hear/feel a click.
5) Insert the battery and install the cover.
6) Power up the device
After completing these steps, the number and color of her phone's 4G bars were the same as mine. Time will tell if this improves her battery life.
Any insight into why Verizon's 4G network is so quirky with the Galaxy Nexus is welcome.

The culprit is indeed Google Maps. I uninstalled the updates and now my battery is better than it has ever been. It's been on for 1 day, 10 hrs. and I'm still at 65% with moderate use(a couple phone calls, some texts and a few market downloads). Thanks to those that made the suggestion to uninstall the Maps updates.

Uninstalled the maps update will see if it works. Battery doesn't last for more than 10hrs with no use at all.

can someone please report back here and let me know if you have this same issue. I've uninstalled Maps updates and disabled it. After a while i go check and it has been re-enabled and updated. I kept disabling it. After a while i also disabled automatic market update/downloads and then uninstalled the Maps updates and disabled it, thinking that maybe when it would auto update that it would also re-enable itself. It still re-enables itself. Can someone tell me if they have the same issue.

Also uninstalled map updates, will post as soon as Ive enough data. Had about %60 Android OS and %30 screen after i rooted. Before I had everything on normal and could go on for 1.5 days with a %100 battery.
I also had the battery indicator issue but that has resolved itself? I dont know honestly.

Sorry if someone has said this before. I've had the galaxy nexus since November. Pretty soon after I got it I noticed large battery drain and worked out that mine was as a result of google location services. I disable everything in location services in settings and my battery life easily gets me through the day. Obviously battery life does also depend on signal strength so if your seeing a lot of grey in that network signal strength bar in battery stats that will also accelerate battery drain. Apologies if its all been said before.

I uninstalled the Google maps update and it has sort of fixed my issue.
My battery survives for almost 36 hours with decent usage not heavy usage.
Android os usage goes upto 30% at times.
Another thing is I have full network coverage but it still says that my cell standby takes 7% of my battery and time without a signal is 100%.
Anyone facing the same issue?

astrit.m...@gmail.com suggestion helped my Nexus S with a manual update to ICS 4.0.3. He suggested you plug in the USB, turn on USB storage, allow it to charge fully, turn off USB storage, then unplug. After I did this the Gallery app was using a bunch of battery, so I stopped it and then my phone was finally able to enter deep sleep according to CPU spy. The "android OS" is still my biggest power draw, so there is still a problem, but being able to get into deep sleep has allowed me 20hrs on 50% charge with light to moderate use.

vzw LTE Galaxy Nexus.
Had this phone since release day, and this problem didn't crop up for me until last week. I disabled/uninstalled everything I'd added (or remembered updating), no luck.
Android OS still sucks more battery than the screen (!), and my battery graph traces a steady downhill, almost regardless of screen or app usage.
I'm charging my phone every chance I get throughout the day (with the extended battery), and still get low battery warnings regularly.
All this is new as of last week :P

I wonder if this could be a problem with calculating the remaining battery power... My Nexus S/4.0.3 was about to run out of juice (after only half a day), so I plugged it in and it immediately jumped to 43% charge! I unplugged it right away and was indeed able to use it for many more hours.

I also had this problem 2 days ago, but after disabling all the "Location services" I got 28 hours out of the phone although the Android OS took over 50% battery and screen took around 29%. Just reset your phone to factory settings (google account will reinstall all your apps except third party which you can install yourself later or use Airdroid to export them). I had a battery life of 10h max and constant reboots and now i get 2 days under light usage and 17h under high moderate - heavy usage (screen brightness is at ~40%-50% I game for 2h, watch 1h of youtube vids oh HQ data and wifi and nfc on and constant calls and texts). I think they had a bugged preinstalled OS on there. The reset solved all my problems.
Also if you update to 4.02 from 4.01 your market and nfc will probably stop working. if you reset to factory while your phone is on 4.02, nfc and market will work again and you will be on 4.02 build from the start, not 4.01.
I hope this helps. I was really pissed off at the battery life and the poor OS but it turns it was just bugged. Galaxy Nexus is an amazing phone and I hope the rest of you will get to experience it once all the bugs have been sorted out. IF you're going to flash custome ROM, please don't forget to backup your stock ROM in case you have to return the phone. This way you can reflash the stock ROM before you take it in.

Having similar problems as everyone else. At night, I will charge my phone up to 100% before I go to bed, then, when I wake up in the morning, it will often have less than 50% battery after literally no use for 7 hours. Several times, it has drained itself down to zero. This is not acceptable simply because I use my phone quite frequently during the day, as well as an alarm, so I don't need to sit up at night wondering if my phone will wake me up the next day.

Same problem (Samsung Galaxy Nexus, 4.0.2 unrooted). The power drain is in some way connected to the NetworkLocationService started my Google Maps after the last update. If you kill it (with the Wifi off, I don't remember now?) the power consumption returns to "normal", unfortunately only till the next reboot or Maps restart.
I use the free JuiceDefender app now as a workaround, but with some tolerable drawbacks. From the power consumption of 60-70% during 8 hour, it decreased to 15-30% now.

My problems are a familiar story. However is a little different to everyone else
I've had my Google Galaxy Nexus since november and not had a simgle problem with it. Then earlier this week it started reporting that it was charging when not connected to anything. It also failed to charge while connected to the AC mains charger. Strangely the only thing it would charge off is my laptop. Stranger still is that it wouldnt connect to my desktop as debugger (so development on my game stopped).
I read online that the problem may be to do with the USB connector, so I cleaned the connector with IPA and tried mating, unmating a few times to clean the contacts.
This resulted in now being able to charge off mains. and be able to connect to the USB debugger! But, the device still shows the charging icon when its not connected to anything... however in the battery status activity it shows discarging!? Partial Result..
The very next day, the OS started consuming upwards of 50% even when in sleep. The screen used to be the number 1 place for battery use, however now its the android OS.
I should mention that I've had all the OTA Updates and am running ICS 4.0.4.
My battery dies completely from a full charge in under 12 hours without use.
when its down to about 15% it will be completely dead within the hour constantly blinking the battery low please charge message every couple of seconds (presumably due to the intermittency in charging and not charging state reporting). I also assume that this is perhaps related to the rapid discarge, as perhaps the phone is thinkng its being plugged in and disconnected rapidly which is causing some loop due to power switching interrupts or something.
Regardless of the cause, this is Absolutely unacceptable!
I cant believe that Google and Samsung havent made a statement of intent to fix this issue!?
I've defended Google At every oportunity possible and have had the HTC Hero, Transformer and now Galaxy Nexus.. I've been trying to convince my apple loving friends to change over to Android and singing its praises, and Now this complete lack of support for a massive issue is making a hypocrite out of me. Dont give them more ammunition and damage your brand on your "flagship" device. respect your customers and let us know when the problem will be fixed. Or if its a hardware fault, swallow your pride and perform a recall as this kind of thing will only damage your brand and hurt you in the long run.

After trying to find out what the problem is with batterystats and CPU Spy, I have discovered.
1: With Wifi on, the phone does not entern Deep Sleep. (99% of the time.)
2: batterystats does not list any wakelocks that causes thos behaviour.
3: The battery drain does not seem to show in the built-in battery stats in 4.0.3. Android OS shows as only 20% and the screen as 46% (which is arguably way to high when remaining battery is 23% and the screen has been on for only one hour). The drain seems to drain away unnoticed by the battery stats.
Using original 4.0.3 from Samsung (XXLPQ) Nordic version.

I noticed too an android OS usage of 29% whereas the screen was at 28% with stock Android 4.0.2 Samsung Nexus that I just got the other day, and wifi always on (on Verizon). It barely shows any running apps, so it's something else draining the battery... maybe a bad driver or something... without deeper instrumentation, it's hard to say/report anything.
I'd love to report more, but I dont have a tool that can provide CPU usage per process... maybe it's a bad process or a bad driver even..not sure. Any suggestions on how to collect more useful data so Google can attack this problem?
I just got the GNex last week so I'm a bit disheartened.. I dont want to return the phone.

Well, after weeks of waiting around for Google to actually do something about this problem and issue an update I decided to take matters into my own hands. I flashed my phone to the leaked 4.0.4 version of ICS and all I can say is the difference is NIGHT AND DAY! Before this update my Android OS was always at 25-35% and now it's constantly at 4-5% with incredible battery life. I can easily go a couple of days between charges with normal use. On top of that, the phone is much smoother and more responsive now where I felt it was a bit sluggish before this update. Overall, I am beyond happy and feel that this is the version of the phone that should have come out of the box. It's clear that 4.0.2 was not ready for prime-time and the phone never should have been released with anything less than this newest version.

On my GSM Nexus S (i9020T) this problem has been fixed by flashing the official ROM 4.0.4. Android OS battery usage is back down to 4%. Performance is improved as well.

I had the same Android-OS problem with my galaxy s2. Then found out that it had something to do with google maps. Even though i had the GPS and Wifi turned off, it was trying to get my position all the time. I uninstalled it (or uninstalled all the updates) and now the battery is working just fine. Hopefully this will work for some of you too…

It has been a few weeks since I upgraded my SGS2 to 4.0.3 and started to experience huge battery drain. I noticed that when I'm at work the drain stopped (only using 2G/3G at work). After a stay at a hotel I noticed that the drain was not so bad when connected to the hotel's WiFi network. So, I started to research the settings of my WiFi network and found that DTIM was set to 5. After changing it to 1 the heavy drainage stopped! My guess is that certain DTIM settings force the phone to wake and sleep constantly causing the phone to newer go into deep sleep, contrary to the intent of the DTIM setting. A screenshot shot shows how the drainage stops when I change the DTIM at the WiFi accesspoint about mid-time. During the test I didn't touch the phone.

I have this problem on my Galaxy Nexus and Im pretty sure its Bluetooth causing it. If bluetooth is off then the phone doesnt deep sleep. When I switch on bluetooth it goes into deep sleep so having bluetooth switched on actually saves me battery life.

Using cpuspy app from the market helps with diagnosing this. Deep Sleep shows as an unused state until I switch on bluetooth the deep sleep starts registering.

Guys, if you have this issue, about cellphone not charging or phantom charging...
Send it back to Samsung and get a replacement or get it fix,
It is a hardware issue. not a software issue and there is no any procedure to get it fix...

Same issue here on Nexus S i9023 4.0.4... Android OS randomly starts sucking up huge amount of battery. One (temporary) solution I've found is to power off/on and/or delete all widgets, then remake them. There was a thread in xda that said widgets were the likely culprit as well.
ta...@gmail.com <ta...@gmail.com> #393
On my Phone, it "Android System" which is eating up all the battery, is it related?
jc...@gmail.com <jc...@gmail.com> #394
My issue is the same as the one in comment #368 . I have an unrooted Nexus S 4g. The problem started while I was still on 2.3.7 (maybe 2 weeks ago, about the same time as the above poster). I noticed that my phone would say it was charging, even when it was unplugged. Even if it was powered down and unplugged the battery charging icon would show. I have tried soft resets, and this sometimes changes the status indicator. This is when I noticed my battery not lasting as long as it had been. I could normally get 12-15hrs with light to moderate usage, sometimes more. It dropped to 7hrs (ish) once this started. The phone gets warm (not hot) even when not being used. At the same time, I noticed the charge was actually going to 100%, when it had never gone above 95%. I do not know if this is related to the issue of the OS keeping the phone awake, because I didn't pay attention to the battery stats closely enough. I did notice that the battery drain graph stopped resetting when I plugged the phone in, and would show multiple days of use, where it had only shown since the last full charge.
Since I knew the 4.0.4 update was coming I dealt with it, hoping the issue would be solved by the update. It hasn't (I got it on Tuesday). Battery usage went from having Screen being the biggest drain, to Android OS being tops (with similar percentages to other posters). Where I would get ~5-8%/hr charge use, it is now a 15%+/hr drop in charge. It is not staying in sleep mode. Even if I haven't touched the phone for a couple of hours, it shows that it has woken and been kept awake for a substantial amount of the up time. I've tried to limit any of the syncing to the minimum accounts. I've removed a couple of apps (Instagram, being the only one I installed during this time).
I have not tried a factory reset yet. I will try removing the update to Google Maps, since I think an update did come in that timeframe and other posters have mentioned issues with a recent G Maps update (although G Maps isn't showing that it's a substantial drain, maybe it's keeping the OS awake???) I do not know if the battery charging issue is the same as the keep awake issue. They just happened at about the same time and at the same time as the above poster. I have a new battery on the way, to see if the charging indicator issue is related to the chip on the battery.
Is anyone else having this additional issue?

To update my previous post (#393): After posting, I went to the Sprint store, where they replaced my battery and cleaned all of the contacts. It seemed to work for a day, but then the problem came back and additionally I noticed that my volume rocker was not registering Vol+, and volume was stuck in vibrate. When the rocker was stuck, OS usage went up, and the phone stayed warm. My phone was replaced under was replaced under warranty. My new phone is on 4.0.4 and appears to be working great with at least as good battery life as the best the old phone got. I have not added in a POP email account that I used to have, but I do have one Exchange account set up. Medium usage will get me 15+ hrs. Android OS shows up as about 5% of battery use.
That said, I think 4.0.4 may have a Bluetooth glitch. Twice (once with old phone, once with new), I have had my car stereo not return to music when ending a call. I have dialed through a shortcut on the phone, and ended the call on the stereo (I did this all the time on 2.3.7). The stereo says that it still has a call connection after ending (keeps giving time connected). Turning the stereo off/on doesn't fix it. Cycling Bluetooth off/on on the phone doesn't fix it. Airplane mode off/on doesn't fix it. The only thing that fixes it is a reboot of the phone.

No other active apps, only two mails came in inbetween.
Battery Widget statistics telling 1 min 35 secs discharging per percent capacity.
And another similar problem lets the phone stay with 200MHz and no Deep Sleep anymore. Restarting phone helps to heal this temporerily.

I would hardly suspect a hardware-independent bug inside android because there are same issues on Galaxy S2.
This MUST be fixed soon. It's a blocker for me, should have been sticking with Android 2.3.6.
Here you see the immense battery drain. At the lowest peak I made a full power down and up and attached a wall charger to recharge it for some one hour. Since then it behaves OK again.

I've got a Nexus S and I've been experiencing the same problems (high Android OS % anywhere from 20-50%). Tried pretty much everything on here and whatever else I could find on the net with no luck.
Randomly, on the weekend I've noticed that my data usage has been unusually high. After investigating, it was Exchange that was using up a lot. I had mine set on Push receiving two email accounts for a period of 1 week. I changed this to 3 days and voila! Android OS disappeared.
It's been on ~5% for about 2 days now and data usage has dropped significantly.
For the record, I haven't noticed any relationship between data usage/Exchange and Android OS in the past (as usually Exchange has it's own process that is prone to using up battery!) but lowering E-mail has magically reduced my Android OS usage.
If anyone can try and let everyone know how it goes, maybe this will help.

I'll add my issues to this list. running VZW galaxy nexus stock on 4.0.2. Was doing ok in terms of battery life since I bought it in mid december, maybe 10-12 hours on 4G. Recently, the last week or so I noticed the phone was dropping about ~12% an holur on standby on the desk. I don't know what changed but built-in battery stats shows Android OS is using 40% of the battery and is in keep awake for the majority of the time it is unplugged. I have noted this issue on 3G, 4G, and wifi. I have bluetooth turned on all the time as I need it to autosync with the car and headsets at home. I haven't changed anything as far as I know. Here are my 2 cents:
Had exactly the same problem - have a stock Nexus S.
Upgrade to 4.0.4 was done automatically from 4.0.3, and the battery performance was terrible (although the phone no longer was leaving burn marks on my thighs from getting too hot in my pocket). After going on a trip and the battery went from 100% to 20% in airplane mode only listening to music for 1 hour, I thought I needed to do something.
Did a factory reset, and, like after any other time I have had to re-install an operating system, lost various saved data for apps that needed to be reinstalled. Maybe helped a bit in regular mode (lasted 8 hours before going down to 20%), but I noticed that in airplane mode it was back to normal battery use.
Checked the option in developer section to kill background apps, which may have helped, although not enough to really notice a difference. Then a couple days later I changed the option on my Exchange account to synchronize 1-month of emails and appointments (from 3-days of emails and 2-weeks of appointments) and battery usage seems to be back to normal (went down from 100% to 65% over 15 hours with light usage, which is how it used to be with Gingerbread).
I'm not sure which of the above steps were essential - I assume the factory reset and changing the Exchange settings were both necessary. Good luck to everyone else having the same problem, and Google really should work harder at debugging their production releases before sending them out to the general public.

I'm having the same issue, Bell Samsung S2, just upgraded to 4.0.3, and the biggest battery drain used to be the screen brightness, but now, its 63% the Android OS. What gives? I'm honestly considering just switching to the iPhone - sometimes you just want a phone that works that you don't have to mess around with... I would love to spend hours upon hours debugging this kind of thing when I was a kid/teenager, but time is limited now and I would love to have a phone that doesn't have stupid issues like this... Ok. I take my previous comment (#425) back. Although initially, turning Bluetooth ON did stop the Android OS awake time, it only took a couple days for it to come back. Everything is back to how it was despite the status of the Bluetooth radio. Upon completing a full charge, Android OS will stay awake sometimes, not all the time. The only thing that temporarily fixes for me it's to perform a reboot, but it's only fix until the phone charges up again. Then it's a roll of the dice. This is really frustrating, I don't get why is it so hard to troubleshoot or display what's keeping Android OS awake?

ke...@gmail.com <ke...@gmail.com> #433
To add to Comment 429 which references 417, I believe it is possibly related to the push with the default mail client. I made two changes in the sync options on my Motorola Xoom with the 4.0.4 ICS on a subfolder to push and 2 weeks and that was about 2 to 3 days ago and noticed now I went from being able to use the battery only for a day and a half started to tank down to barely lasting 14 hours. I believe if sync options are changed within the default mail client to add additional resources to sync, it causes the the Android OS to keep the active longer than necessary for delta checks.

I have the same problem om my Nexus running JB. Android OS responsible for 65% batt usage when the phone is in my pocket all day. Total battery life barely exceeding 10 hrs.

I have had my ASUS Transformer Infinity for three weeks and just encountered this problem. My tablet was left at full charge when I went to bed. When I checked it 12 hours later, the the battery was drained down to 17%. I checked the built in battery usage in the settings and saw that Android OS used up all the battery. Upon clicking on Android OS, and the tablet reported that a "wake time" was on for 11 hours and 57 minutes.
am...@gmail.com <am...@gmail.com> #441
I dont know if this solves the problem, but when I did this:
- Wait for the battery reaches 4%
- Take the battery off, wait for 15 mins.
- put the battery back in, and charge the phone.
- Turn on the phone
And voila!, the F... ANDROID OS disapears. I have my phone 30 hours and 85% left (w/ 10 mins on calls no wifi o data networks).
Test this procedure and tell me if it work for you. I dont know what opens de ANDOID OS process.

guys i solved this issue.
My "Android OS" was using up all the battery when the phone was in standby.
How i solved it
Settings > Accounts & sync > Remove google account
yes it was that simple, some google app was messing around (thinking its the maps/navigation one)
My galaxy nexus is behaving normally now. Android OS back to 2% battery usage

I had a similar thing on my SG2 suddenly start a couple of weeks after adding a google account. I did as jaideep suggested in Comment 441, but I also had to power down and pull the battery (!) before it seemed to take effect.
Not sure what was going on, but that process seems to have battery usage back to normal.

Suddenly started getting horrible battery life on my Galaxy Nexus. Have had it six months and its worked like a dream prior to this. Battery life that would once last all day with frequent use barely lasts 2.5 hours without any use. As with many previous entries, the Android OS stats are high with 'Awake' begin equal to 100% of the time since disconnected from charger. Using advanced stats, 'vbus-tuna-otg' wakelock is responsible for this, with a ratio of over 90%. I have three batteries and this affects each one identically, and I now have to carry the extra charged ones to make it through the work day.

Just started happening to my Nexus 4 today... around 45% use from barely using my phone since 9 AM, battery around 35% at 2PM. Unacceptable... This is with WiFi off too

I have just found this issue today after playing music for the first time in weeks. I look around the web and it seems to have been unfixed by months. Can someone from Google please provide an urgent update?
ma...@gmail.com <ma...@gmail.com> #448
Saw this issue on galaxy nexus and 4.2.1 and still seeing it on 4.2.2. Android OS will suddenly start using battery, sometimes after using google music but not always. It usually requires a reboot to fix.

Hi ,
This problem is also there on Sony Xperia P : ICS 4.0.4 . Clearly the behavior of my Xperia P is similar as being said in above comments. Has made my phone act like a ZOMBIE.
Observations :
1. My android os usage is almost same as the discharging time ( difference not more than 1 hr )
2. If I reboot my phone , things get better for sometime until 2 or 3 days.
Applications being used / disabled:
1. I used email exchange ( synced to 3 days of mail ) for 2 accounts.
2. Lync 2010 ( No CPU usage problem with 1. or 2. )
3. Disabled apps ( Talk , Twitter , FB , G+ , Gmail , Timescape ) : I spent so much to make my phone a ZOMBIE by disabling this apps.
If I just have to spend my time restarting and analyzing the battery in my phone then what's the use of spending so much.
This is so ridiculous , I can't blame Sony for this because it's the OS causing troubles here. 2 years since release and no solution yet !!!
Regards,
Hasan

Same issue here with my Xperia P running OCS 4.0.4. Have reinstalled several times with same result. OS takes between 40% and 60%.

SOLUTION Finally on my end :
Along with my comment #448 , I have finally been able to resolve this on my Xperia P after a lot of experimentation. I am still experimenting on the resolution.
Cause : I found that the Android OS process keeps pinging because of the location services.
Steps which have resolved for me :
1. Settings
2. Location & Security
3. Un-check all options.
Since then the Android OS process wake up is taking not more than 2 mins in a run on 5 hrs. My phone is on since 13hrs . I have mail sync on , lync on and the battery is still 81% . I am still testing this , I will start enabling my disabled apps one by one to check what is going on.
Regards,
Hasan

Noticed something similar on my Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.2.2. Android OS is reported as causing a lot of battery drain.
Looking at adb shell dumpsys batteryinfo it looks like two kernel wake locks are to blame, gps-lock and vbus-tuna_otg.
Statistics since last unplugged:
Time on battery: 1h 22m 31s 644ms (74,6%) realtime, 1h 22m 31s 644ms (74,6%) uptime
Total run time: 1h 50m 36s 85ms realtime, 1h 50m 36s 85ms uptime,
Screen on: 7m 59s 196ms (9,7%), Input events: 0, Active phone call: 0ms (0,0%)
Screen brightnesses: dark 6m 40s 517ms (83,6%), dim 1m 18s 678ms (16,4%)
Kernel Wake lock "gps-lock": 1h 22m 31s 167ms (0 times) realtime
Kernel Wake lock "vbus-tuna_otg": 24m 48s 791ms (1 times) realtime
Kernel Wake lock "PowerManagerService": 15m 4s 241ms (442 times) realtime
No idea when the problem started, but I've archived the output from adb bugreport just in case.

Hi Johan,
The "vbus-tuna_otg" seems to be related to a USB service. Check if USB Debugging is enabled on your phone. For the "gps-lock" please follow as I have mentioned in #450, it worked for me.

Hasan

Hi,
This problem started showing up on my Nexus 7 4G after updating to 4.2.2.
Now Android OS uses more battery than my screen except if I actually use the tablet constantly.
My location setting has not changed and USB debugging is not enabled.

This is happening to my Verizon DROID BIOINC running Android 4.0.4. Even after performing a Factory Reset and not installing any applications, the power drains (on a brand new extended battery) from100% to 40% in about 3 hours... when I'm not even using the phone , i.e. it's just in my pocket. Even in no wifi, no sync, airplane mode and sleep mode, the battery drains 10-20% per hour. Android OS is using 80-93% of battery. I have never rooted the phone.
Is there anyone who can change the priority of this to something higher than Medium?

My phone (DROID BIONIC) is fixed!
It was not an Android problem but a hardware problem. I was fortunate enough to have a Square Trade warranty, so I filed a claim and they asked me to send the phone in. They repaired it. I charged it last night, turned it on at 7:00AM, used it the normal amount throughout the day. 13 hours later, and the battery (standard battery) still has 64% charge.

Does this mean, that the bug is fixed with Android 4.3 or how should we understand "obsolete"? I can't find anything on obsolete here: http://source.android.com/source/life-of-a-bug.html
jo...@gmail.com <jo...@gmail.com> #461
Perhaps it means that the device is obsolete?
I tried contacting Samsung support here in Sweden about it and they tell you to try a factory reset and if that doesn't help, it doesn't, you have to send the device in, which wont help since it is not that easy to reproduce reliably. According to the support rep I spoke to that's all they can do since they have no way to report software problems to anyone within the Samsung organization or to Google for Nexus devices. Could of course be that I was lied to and the support rep was just lazy and wanted to get rid of me.

I'm seeing the vbus-tuna_otg wakelock issue with 4.3. Others have suggested that this is often a hardware issue with the USB port. Which would be frustrating, since I just had it replaced a couple of months ago.

I also have the vbus-tuna_otg kernel wakelock on 4.2.2 and it is draining my batter like crazy. I already changed out my usb port and the problem is still there. I have a verizon 32gb gnex. Any tips??? Please.

hello I tried to flash my droid bionic and it got to 21 out of 22 is there a way I can charge the battery any help will be grateful thank you
Description
The attached screenshots show the usage and some members from the XDA community have even indicated higher battery usage.
Is this the same issue that was identified with the suspend process on the Samsung Galaxy SII ?
