Sorry for the delayed response. Under 'data syncronization' in settings, 'Auto-Sync,
Gmail, Calendar, & Contacts' are all checked. Last sync was on Feb 25. I press menu
button and choose sync now and nothing happens. When I go to 'manage applications'
then 'Gmail' then 'Manage Space' I get force close every time. I've 'cleared data'
in both 'Gmail' and 'Gmail Storage'. There is no option to start over and enter
Gmail account email information again like there is in the 'Email' app. I believe if
I could set it up all over again, it would sync again. I don't know what users do
who have multiple Gmail accounts or change their Gmail account name. I guess you're
just screwed unless you use a different mail client. Basically my calendar is blank
accept for what I enter manually. All Gmail appointments will not show without the
sync. Upon opening Gmail app, I see 'Your email will appear shortly.' Of course,
that never happens because the phone will not sync. Let me know if you need more
information. Thanks

Is your device low on space? There've been reports of similar sync issues when the
internal storage is almost full, and we'd like to correlate the various reports. Thanks.

Indeed it is low on space. So I may have to delete a bunch of my apps to attain
space? Boo! I'm already having to pick which app I like the least just to make
updates. So sad. Thanks for all your hardwork, Engineers!

All right, thanks for the confirmation. Yes, the situation is unfortunate, it's too
easy to fill internal storage, and the system behavior degrades in unexplained ways
when that happens.

Do you know the threshold which cues the 'Low on Space' message? 5 MB? 4 MB? I have
2MB right now and I'm still receiving the internal memory messagee. Thanks

I'll go ahead and answer my question. It seems like the magic number for me was
7mb. I had to delete a lot of apps I really liked to get there, but it synced as
you all predicted. Hmm, do I like the apps better or the ability to sync?

6-7MB seems like 10% of available storage.
I also noticed, that I couldn't install or upgrade any app when low on space.

This is not an enhancement but a clear defect -- the primary role of this OS is
communications and an arbitrary threshold of 6MB should not prevent completion of
this primary directive -- on it's last gasp of life it should be able to sync my
Gmail. It is clear that as soon as the status bar notification of "Low on space" /
"Phone storage space is getting low." will prevent any further sync and this should
not be the case. I do have tons of apps and have gotten bitten by this once too many now.

I am having the same problem with sync not working. The irony in my case is that I
accidentally wiped the data for "contacts and myfaves storage" because I was low on
space. Now I can't get my contacts back because I can't sync.
IMO "sync now" should display a message indicating that there is not enough available
space to sync and how much memory I need to clear in order to sync; as it is, it just
looks to the user like sync is broken altogether.
Also, none of this would be as big an issue if the phone could store applications on
the sd card. I could do this with my old motorola A780; when the card was removed,
the applications would simply not be available. (yes, I know about apps2sd -- I'm
proposing this should be a standard feature of Android) (and yes, I agree that this
last paragraph should probably be in its own bug report instead of tacked onto the
end of this one as a comment)

On my Moto Droid, I have picked up on the same issue of not being able to sync with 'low memory'. However it is not at 6-8 mb, it is at about 25 mb when it comes in. That to me is way out of line.

HTC Desire
Android 2.2
Spent ages trying to figure out why HTC Calendar app wouldn't sync. My device "low on storage" warning comes up at <15MB (a *huge* amount of space), but doesn't make it clear to the user that this *breaks* sync functionality for certain apps (e.g. Calendar) - which is *never* going to use 15MB to begin with.
Either lower the limits (HTC responsible?) or provide a clearer warning how important free flash space is for the proper functioning of the device.

Perhaps that was my problem as well got low space warning - but saw that
12mb was left.... so kinda ignored it but if calender doesn't sync when less
than 15mB then that's problematic esp for people who still like me have 2.1
and can't move apps to sdcard...

I've also faced syncing issues on my HTC Desire.
When free phone storage dropped below ~14MB and the phone started showing the warning message, syncing stopped (without any obvious message). It started again once I ran the through these instructions to force some apps onto the SD card.http://www.lorinbute.com/posts/how-to-force-apps-to-move-to-the-sd-card-on-froyo.html
This situation would stump many (most?) users - the code should definitely show a more useful message.

I've just started hitting this problem on HTC Desire with Froyo. I've removed a number of apps, and there really aren't many optional apps left in core memory, yet still I'm getting the low on space error message and gmail etc. are refusing to sync. Suspect that a mix of oversized core apps (Flash), large contacts database (although nowhere near as large as some, surely?) and poor filesystem cleanup are to blame. Apps2SD really no help given that even Google's apps don't often support it, let alone anyone else's. I'm going to have to factory reset my phone and reinstall everything from scratch by the looks of it, which makes me grumpy.
cu...@gmail.com <cu...@gmail.com> #20
I too have this problem on the Desire 2.2. No sync when free memory is below 15mb. Even moving apps to the SD doesn't help. I don't actually have that many additional apps and those I have, I use all the time.
This is a very limiting for android.

gv...@gmail.com <gv...@gmail.com> #21
For me GMail stops syncing and notifying when I go below 43MB. That's more than enough for most operations! It's basically low when 10% of internal storage is reached. So, if you have 32GB of internal memory, you're low on memory when you have 3.2GB left ... that's not remotely logical!
tn...@gmail.com <tn...@gmail.com> #22
Same problem with HTC Desire as described. Calendar won't sync if the low memory warning is on. My treshold is 15 MB and it SUCKS! Not only because of this behavior, but it even doesn't warn you that he is stopping to sync... It's the most annoying feature of my Desire. Sadly the only annoying feature...

:))) Okay. It's 2016 now, I'm on Android 5.0... "lower the limits", heheh, I have 300 MB of free space, and it makes Android unable to sync anything, even a single Keep note consisting of a few lines of raw text.
(And you guessed it right, "Sync now" still doesn't provide any feedback whatsoever - not a popup, not a beep, the command is just ignored altogether).

Okay. It's 2016 now, I'm on Android 5.0... "lower the limits", heheh, I have 300 MB of free space, and it makes Android unable to sync anything,
It's now 2022 and the amount of storage required is somewhere between 1GB and 1.5GB. Sync now fails silently before the "low space" warning appears. There has been one "improvement": the "Sync now" button disappears if there isn't enough space.
Description
of phone will allow sync. Wont receive email for days.
