Hey, if you edit your contacts online through Gmail/Google Apps, each contact now has a
dedicated 'birthday' field. The limitation is just that the 'contacts' app in Android
(like on our G1's) doesn't support this field, yet.
Surely there is no excuse now Android devs? Maybe you could make this a milestone for
donut?

Personally, I do not see that birthday field in Gmail (mail.google.com ). I do

does not show up in any other google application that I use.
Does the api allow access to more information than is shown in the Android Contacts app?

I also would like to be able to manage contacts' birthdays from my phone, and its
integration to Calendar. This is already possible from the web, as
1. you can add a birthday info when editing Google contacts from the web;
2. to add them to your calendar: (i) Go to Calendar's Settings page (on the web, not
on the phone), (ii) select the "Calendars" tab and click on "Browse public
calendars", (iii) then add the calendar "Contacts' birthdays and events".
Once that calendar is selected in the web view. It will also sync to your phone.

Agreed that this would be an amazing addition to the Android contacts, especially if
it had an option to sync with with the calender on both the web and the android
device. Maybe put a tick box next to the birth date in the contact which signifies
whether you want to sync that date onto the calendar.
For now I am using the Ebobirthday app and the Ebobirthday contacts sync app to make
sure that my dates are there and that I am getting reminders.

It is a great way for the contact system to aggregate information useful to apps. I can
imagine apps making good use of birthday information for everyone in your contact list.
Also Synergy services like MOTOBLUR would need to save info from social networks that

3) The last hurdle is adding this field to the Android Contacts Activity.

Google calendar already has a reminder feature for anniversary and birthdays. All
you have to do is subscribe to the "Contacts' birthdays and events" calendar in the
Other calendars section.
I've done this and it works fine on my phone the only problem is that I cannot add a
birthday to my contact from my phone. I have to log into gmail thru the website to
add bday's and anniversaries. This is all that they need to add.

It's interesting I made the comment that birthdays and anniversaries are not showing
up in the contacts.. but now they are sorta.. I have a Sprint HTC Hero which has some
sort of facebook intergration with the contacts. I noticed that I do have a birthday
and anniversary field in my contacts when I edit them, but they do not actually sync
to google. So I'm guessing that HTC must have added these fields to the contacts.
It's still not a perfect solution, as I have to enter all the dates in both gmail

As a temporary remedy, you can use the free EboBirthday app, which maintains

Yes, I'm plugging my own app here, but it's really just meant as a interim solution

The most flexible solution would be to offer any number of additional fields as part
of the contact template, which could be "date", "string", "phone number", "email
address", "URL", "other contact", so that users can add whatever additional data they
want, so you could add "Spouse [other contact]", and for Spanish users, "Santos [date]".
(The only downside to a non-standardized template would be that it is harder for apps
to access that data.)

I think the whole vcard standard should be implemented, the wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VCard is easier reading than the official rfc.
If done right it could easily be extendable to support the common extensions like X-
ANNIVERSARY, X-SPOUSE, etc. Simply filter out the X- and lower the case of the rest
and display it in both google contacts and the contact field of the android address
book. Then we could easily add additional fields using X-WHATEVERWEWANT and just
make the contacts apps on google and android display these additional fields. The
KDE Address book uses X-PARENT and X-CHILD (Or somehting like that) so you could put
in parents, children, etc. I come from two large families, my mother and father
both had 6 siblings so that makes 14 children from their generation and say an
average of 2 each I have ~28 cousins, then some married and had average of two kids,
my two kids have 40-50 cousins. So I have close to 50 contacts of just the family
members I'm close to and 50 or so others that I can't remember how they are related,
those parent/child fields would be a big help when I see someone in the family group
that I can't remember how I know them.
The GEO field would be interesting to integrate with Latitude so someone with
another phone thats using latitude their location could come back down to their
contact on my phone.

Keep contacts birthdays in sync with Android Contacts and Gmail (Google Mail)
contacts is a must! The calendar link is a desire.
contacts is a must! The calendar link is a desire.
eu...@gmail.com <eu...@gmail.com> #69
This request may need to split depending on Android version. From the comments it
appears its not supported at all in some versions but 2.0.x does support birthdays,
i.e. if I put in a birthday in gmail contacts and it shows on the phone, just need to
add the ability to edit on the phone and the ability to link it to the calendar on
the phone rather than having to go to the google calendar web site.
Anniversary gets trickier since its not a standard vcard field (which most contact
systems are based on). The anniversary and spouse fields are usually implemented as
X-extensions.
Anniversary also gets trickier if you have a contact for both spouses and have a
calendar display the anniversary you will get it twice. We worked around this in the
KDE Address book by use of the X-spouse fields to link spouses together then would
use that to join the names and eliminate the duplicates. So it looks like this in
the underlying data:
FN:Spouse1 Lastname
X-Anniversary:2010-01-01
X-SpousesName:Spouse2 Lastname
FN:Spouse2 Lastname
X-Anniversary:2010-01-01
X-SpousesName:Spouse1 Lastname
Then the calendar would display:
Spouse1 and Spouse2 Lastname's Anniversary.
I've been digging through the contacts source code, just adding the fields is easy
enough, just treat it as a couple additional fields, one with a date, one with text,
the joining would be done by whatever code does the calendar display.
The other half then is opening the same request on the gmail side to duplicate the
same fields on the gmail contacts side.
An additional feature would be when filling in the spouse field allow it to be typed
in text for cases where you only have a contact for one spouse, but also allow to
bring up a contact chooser to pick an existing contact and somehow make that dynamic
since it could be possible for a user to associate the spouses prior to changing one
of the spouses last names then have have the spouse data break due to the name change.

I would revise your 'ideal' functionality as follows:
b) integrates with Gmail calendar if Gmail contact OR Corporate calendar if
Corporate contact
I would also say that having a combined calendar is also critical.

@half of the users who commented above: As for example reevery has already explained:
this is a bug tracking system. - If you haven't to add something new and
constructive, don't complain here, because right now 566 people will get an email
every time you do this. And as you've starred this issue, people already know that
you want it to be solved.
Bottom-line: In fact you're not helping at all, because every comment has to be read
by the developers. In other words, the more useless comments will be posted, the more
time the developers have to be spent to read through these comments. Maybe because of
the flood of complaints, fruitful ideas will not be seen. Moreover, it consumes the
developers' time and this will result in later bug fixes. Or in other words, you're
just annoying other people.
@Google: Maybe you could think about a separation of the notification and the vote
for bugs in the future. - I've starred a few of these 'Oh my god, I feel so bad,
because this feature is not working' and think of, as reevery said, unstarring these.
An approach of
- full notification (on every comment, status-update, etc.)
- notification on status update
- or no notification but still having the possibility to vote
would be very helpful. - Thanks!

Windows mobile has had this capability for years, literally and it is sad to see such
capability absent in Android. It doesn't matter that Android is still young.
A contact should have a birthday field. Entering a date into the field should sync
with whichever account the contact belongs to. This should then integrate into the
calendar associated with the account that the contact resides under. A yearly event
should be made on the calendar. As a bonus, the person's age should be visible. Hey,
not trying to be like Windows per se, but it's a nice touch.
The current non-existent implementation on the phone is unacceptable. Furthermore,
the method of entering the birthday via the website and then subscribing to the
birthday calendar is sloppy at best. That is another calendar I have to subscribe to
and another calendar that I can't add reminders or notes to, sending me back to the
web to copy the event to my main calendar if I want to set a reminder or edit the
event. Come on google, let's focus on the obvious things before adding more "pretty
stuff" to Android.

Android's source is open, you can make the change yourself. If you're just stopping

if you don't get your contacts birthdays syncing with Google calendar, DON'T. All

chrisrico is totally off with his logic.
He is saying if a surgeon (during the surgery)

I agree with tcostasouza that I spent $530 for the
device (not just phone) and as a customer I have certain expectations.
For example, if I buy a car I assume that the brakes will be applied
when I depress the pedal.
This feature is such basic feature for a PDA device (as it is advertised,
not only phone) they charge hefty price for that not only one time,
also monthly fees.
So they better put their act together or Windows will win the battle!
In other words, market will speak! Just doing the STAR does not help
it seems cause the issue is around since day one and nothing is happening.
At least BB Storm I had, I used to get quite a few update to the software
fixing issues. This phone does not get that. Not sure what they are busy

Wow...in about fifteen minutes I figured out how to get the contacts birthdays and
anniversaries to show on the calendar. I also noticed that if you click on the birthday you
can set a reminder. Don't on how it works yet but I bet I does fine. Even with Palm I had to
choose the reminder...it was not automatic. AND...I like that I can access the calendar from
any computer with web access, not just with Palm Desktop.
I am also happy to see the various Holiday calendars among the choices. That feature was
not automatic with Palm.
Overall, after getting over the differences, I think Google has done a great job.

The lack of integration of contacts and calendar is fundamental disadvantage of android. There should be ability to copy contact name and phone number to new calendar event in an easy way (e.g. during making an event). Then when the reminder is shown I can just tap displayed phone number in order to make planned call. This is partially resolved by third party app Contact Event (paid), but such a functionality was offered five years ago in Nokia s40 series.

To summarize what's being said above and to try to make it clear to anyone who has to find and fix this issue:
The android 2.1 framework and the underlying sqlite3 database DOES support Birthday, Anniversary, and "other" as a ContactContract.Data record with the mimetype vnd.android.com.contacts.contact_event.
The problem is that the contacts app that comes with the Droid 1 (and probably others) will SHOW you the dates (if added externally such as in gmail), but it doesn't give you the ability to add/modify/delete them when you EDIT a contact.
The Incredible DOES allow you to add/edit/delete dates in your contacts but i'm assuming that this is 3rd party software that replaces the "vanilla" android contacts. So the bug isn't that these dates are not supported by the framework, it's just a bug/missing feature in the vanilla contacts app that doesn't allow you to add/edit/delete the dates.
I can't speak to the Calendar app portion of the request. Hope this helps.

on htc desire with android 2.2 there is a field for the birthday of a contact, and it gets also synced online.
however, there seems to be an issue with syncing the "contacts birthdays and events"-calender. It shows only the next birthday of each contact at the time of the first activation of the calendar of the phone. Not past birthdays and not future ones, only the next. Changes on a contacts birthday AFTER the first activation of the birthday-calendar on the phone are not synced to the phone at all.
In the browser the calendar shows ALL birthdays of the contacts properly.

A friend commented that Google seem to treat Android development as some kind of hobby. This would seem to confirm that.
Rather than "only" add the Birthday field, perhaps the (apparently very scarce) development time could be spent adding an "anything" field by which we could add Birthday now, and any other forget field later without having to repeat the two year wait?

Not only would I like to see a birthday entered into a contact show up on the calendar, but I would like the reverse integration.
If I add a calendar event, I would like name options to appear the way they do as I enter a "name" into the phone dialing, and it brings up a list. Subsequently, I would like the "appointments" that I have or had to show up in the contact card.
This means that instead of searching the calendar to see how many times and when I met with Angela, I can look at my Angela contact card and see how many times I met with her and when.
This feature was in Apple's Newton from 15 years ago. Why can't we have this feature today?
I love the Android OS on my HTC Incredible and feel that calendar/contact integration would make Android better than iPhone!

I am operating on a LG GT540 version 2.1 update 1 and this is working for the birth date but not birthdays (ie yearly reminder). In the calendar under more options, there is a field to turn on "Contact' birthdays and events" but it seems this does not create a recurring calendar entry, only the original date. Is it simply a matter of making birthday and other anniversaries by default to be annually recurring events? I would also like it to show the age/years in the calendar reminder if possible

At a family gathering I'd like to update my relatives birthdays, anniversaries etc. and have it sync to my computer. I guess I can email the info to myself and update it on my laptop later. Please fix this.

Hi,
I have a new Samsung Google Nexus S, sync with my Gmail account. No problem, it's works fine.
What I need it's to be able to modifiy/add contact's anniversarie/birthday on my mobile. Under Android Gingerbread 2.3 it's not possible. You can only see it.
Only on Gmail account under contact we can do that.
I wish that will be added on next update ?! Please, thank you.

WOW... for a user like me who is slowly moving from Outlook to Gmail, it's quite unbelievable to realize that Google's team has not thought about this issue before!!!
ga...@android.com <ga...@android.com> #166
Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) lets users add and modify the contact event field to support editing of birthdays, anniversaries, etc on the device.
Since the original issue also requests direct calendar integration, I'll modify the issue summary and subcomponent to just focus on that remaining piece.

Gabe, its funny that you mention that Honeycomb allows users to do this! Customers / Users are STILL not clear if Honeycomb will be available for Mobile phones and more importantly WHEN!!
If the code is available, why not just roll out an update to fix it!!!
Such an update is most customer/user UNFRIENDLY, to say the least, and does not show the spirit of Google which we all loved. Off late this spirit seems to be diminishing day by day!

So there now (for some honeycomb is still years away, if ever) is a way to edit event fields, but those events are not synced with a calendar?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for (integrating) progress. But seeing as updating a mobile OS is still a long way from updating a program or app, wouldn't it be far more desirable to add the synchronization as well To "finish" the feature?

Is there a simple way for the Android team to incorporate feature on current Andriod platforms. After all, Honeycomb only accounts for a small % of current users, right?
ch...@gmail.com <ch...@gmail.com> #171
#170, does Honeycomb really fix this? I just tried to create a contact in the emmulator contacts app and still found no way to set a birthday...
ti...@gmail.com <ti...@gmail.com> #172
So 2.5 years on and this STILL isn't implemented??? I just received a brand spanking new android phone (running 2.3.2) and it took just minutes for me to go "Hey! I can't add a freaking birthday!". Even the strange people at LG were smart enough to have that 5 years ago!

sf...@gmail.com <sf...@gmail.com> #174
I'm in the same situation as TisWeerN in comment 176: I received a new smart phone, tried to enter contacts and found that there is no dedicated birthday field with the usual calendar functions tied to it. This should be base functionality, not only on tabloids. While I understand that google is keen on information being added on the google contacts, I personally do not want to add contact information of others online.
se...@googlemail.com <se...@googlemail.com> #175
Birthday field is really needed, also the possibility of an offline calendar.
It is so stupid, still Gingerbread have no birthday or anniversary field in contact. HTC reproduced this feature since Eclair, but forgotten possibility to sync with local calendar. Even reduced the contact information (only forname and surename) and no type for mail address.

Is the strategy that you should use google calendar only?? I have an Android phone but that doesnt mean I use my google account for everything (e.g. birthday calendar). I can imagine that Google would like everybody to use their "g-account" as your one and only, but that just won't happen for everybody.
So please add the birhtday-field to the contacts. I imported contacts from my former phone with (!) birhtday date, it does show up in the contact, but you can't change it and of course its not visible in calendar. WTF? I mean when I decided for Android I didnt research if this phone supports contact birthdays....

Our company wants to change from the current PDAs to Smartphones. A smooth workflow for the calendar and contacts is essential. Checking Android for the migration leads me to a question:
Why does google and android not rely on the proven system concerning the contacts and calendar features?
A birthday data field belongs to the contact data, as all major programs like outlook and lotus use it. Its standardized in the VCF contact format.
Somehow I managed to sync the outlook contacts with Android but its was not comfortable. The birthday shows up in the contacts on the smartphone but are not linked to the calendar. Even our 10 year old Siemens cellphones are able to do this.
Since many company are using microsoft exchange server, there shold be an easy way to sync including birthdays. I am thinking about just typing in my exchange username, password, port and serveradress on my new smartphone and all contacts and dates get synced.
As soon as there is no easy way to do so we have to stick to windows phone 7.
Regards,
JR

I was annoyed by the lack of this feature, too and therefore I've written a little free and addfree app that lets you edit the birthdays on your phone: https://market.android.com/details?id=zink.testprojects.editbirthday
Edit Birthday enables you to edit the birthdates of your contacts. The added or edited birthdates will be instantly visible when viewing your contacts and will be synced with gmail.
In comparison to other apps Edit Birthday uses the original Android datastore and no 3rd-Party databases that would need extra synchronisation.

For what it's worth, I can confirm that this issue no longer exists in Android 4.0. The Ice Cream Sandwich contact editor lets you create, read, update, and delete birthday, anniversary, and indeed custom events per contact. Better late than never I suppose!
sv...@gmail.com <sv...@gmail.com> #199
Since adding the birthday to a contact is possible with the current android release the only issue that remains is that those are not shown by default in the calendar. The user has to enable the "birthday calendar" at google.com/calendar first. It should be available by default instead.
Thus issue 36949180 is the remaining bit.
Thus
