Issue 1211: Contact Record to Contain Birthday & Anniversary Date Fields w/Calendar Integration
424 people starred this issue and may be notified of changes. Back to list

Reported by c...@chaznet.com, Nov 06, 2008
Currently, Contact birthdays and anniversaries must be maintained
separately of the contact record in the Calendar. Request for these fields
to be part of the contact record and integrated with the Calendar app.
Comment 1 by andrey.moscow, Nov 10, 2008
birthday field is very necessary!

That's pretty much a given, but, thanks for stopping by ;)

This is one of the major functionalities Gmail's contacts should have.

Comment 9 by lizhuohuan, May 26, 2009
birthday is very important gfor users.
Comment 10 by sheri...@shezza.org, Jun 02, 2009
Hey, if you edit your contacts online through Gmail/Google Apps, each contact now has a
dedicated 'birthday' field. The limitation is just that the 'contacts' app in Android
(like on our G1's) doesn't support this field, yet.

Surely there is no excuse now Android devs? Maybe you could make this a milestone for
donut?
Comment 12 by sheri...@shezza.org, Jun 03, 2009
Sergeybe,

If you go through the Gmail contacts list, there is definitely a birthday year field.
Comment 13 by dan.deebster, Jun 09, 2009
Personally, I do not see that birthday field in Gmail (mail.google.com). I do
however, see it if I go to http://www.google.com/contacts, but this extra information
does not show up in any other google application that I use.

Does the api allow access to more information than is shown in the Android Contacts app?
Comment 14 by m.camchong, Jul 01, 2009
Is this field coming to Android?
Comment 15 by Jan.Peter.Simonsen, Aug 08, 2009
Please add a birthday field
Comment 16 by francisco.borges, Aug 10, 2009
I also would like to be able to manage contacts' birthdays from my phone, and its
integration to Calendar. This is already possible from the web, as

1. you can add a birthday info when editing Google contacts from the web;

2. to add them to your calendar: (i) Go to Calendar's Settings page (on the web, not
on the phone), (ii) select the "Calendars" tab and click on "Browse public
calendars", (iii) then add the calendar "Contacts' birthdays and events".

Once that calendar is selected in the web view. It will also sync to your phone.
Comment 17 by schlaber, Aug 13, 2009
Yes the birthday field is very important. Please support the birthday also on the
mobile device.
On my HTC Hero there is a extra field for birthday in the contact details but this
doesn't sync with the google contacts birthday.

Also the Google-Calendar for Birthdays should be synchronized between Google calendar
and the Android Phone!

Agreed that this would be an amazing addition to the Android contacts, especially if
it had an option to sync with with the calender on both the web and the android
device. Maybe put a tick box next to the birth date in the contact which signifies
whether you want to sync that date onto the calendar.

For now I am using the Ebobirthday app and the Ebobirthday contacts sync app to make
sure that my dates are there and that I am getting reminders.

Birthday sync with GMail Contacts, and automagic birthday calendar please.

Apple has done this for a long time for a reason. It's a very neat feature, that most
people find very useful.
Comment 25 by electrocutor, Sep 03, 2009
It's ridiculous that such a simple feature has been overlooked.

What is the point of having a birthday input field on the android contacts when it is
not updated to the calendar??
Comment 26 by Heta...@gmail.com, Sep 03, 2009
I too vote this Greate Enhancement. I think HTC Hero is already doing the same and
Gmail Already can store Birthday and Anniversary. We just need Good Contact
Application which can get Benefit of this out of the Box
Comment 27 by igusev, Sep 03, 2009
This has been asked for since November 2008 and it is still not implemented yet it is
such a fundamental feature. How could google miss it?!
Comment 28 by tabi.deas, Sep 03, 2009
It appears that the Birthday field shows up in Contacts on the G1, however the
Anniversary field does not. Also, is there any way to have dates from contacts
(birthdays, anniversaries, etc) automatically show up in the calendar? Very
important!
Comment 29 by francisco.borges, Sep 04, 2009
To have the birthdays appear in your Google calendar, see this comment
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1211#c16
Comment 30 by jacklweinberg, Sep 16, 2009
I think that this is highly necessary for Android Contacts to be a "full featured"
contacts system.

Comment 31 by raynerape, Sep 16, 2009
It is a great way for the contact system to aggregate information useful to apps. I can
imagine apps making good use of birthday information for everyone in your contact list.
Also Synergy services like MOTOBLUR would need to save info from social networks that
always provide birthday information.
Comment 32 by OlliTech, Sep 24, 2009
1) Google contacts do support birthdays (visible from gmail and voice).
2) A calendar Labs feature will populate a 'Birthday' Calendar with this info.
3) The last hurdle is adding this field to the Android Contacts Activity.

Please keep comments limited to the need for this field in android.(point 3) There
are numerous google groups available for support issues (ie getting the birthdays in
calendar)
Comment 33 by hineshm, Sep 26, 2009
Essential!
Comment 34 by ferranb, Oct 04, 2009
I think that as francisco.borges explains on #16 it's enought.
Comment 35 by mtybin...@gmail.com, Oct 07, 2009
needed!!!!
Comment 36 by theodore80, Oct 09, 2009
It's not nice to maintain birthdays in two sides (Gmail Contacts and my Hero Contacts).

Google should definitely fix it as soon as possible. It is an essential feature!..

Needed!
Comment 42 by nealmcb, Oct 14, 2009
Please don't post "me too" comments on the bug tracker. It is better to vote for it
by clicking on the "star" to the left of the title.

Comments that don't contain new information that would actually help fix the bug
result in counterproductive email to all the rest of us. Thanks.
Comment 43 by ben.a.white, Oct 16, 2009
in addition to adding the birthday and anniversary fields, there should be a built in
reminder for these events special events.
Here is a screenshot of a windows mobile app that does something like this

Ben

Google calendar already has a reminder feature for anniversary and birthdays. All
you have to do is subscribe to the "Contacts' birthdays and events" calendar in the
Other calendars section.

I've done this and it works fine on my phone the only problem is that I cannot add a
birthday to my contact from my phone. I have to log into gmail thru the website to
add bday's and anniversaries. This is all that they need to add.
Comment 45 by ben.a.white, Oct 16, 2009
It took me a minute to find this calendar under the Interesting Calendars/more tab, but
it worked great. thanks...
Comment 46 by ben.a.white, Oct 16, 2009
Appears anniversaries are not included in the calendar, but it's a good start anyway...
Comment 47 by schlaber, Oct 19, 2009
@Ben
But there is one big problem with the "Contacts' birthdays and events" calendar.
Notifications for this calendar are disabled in my calendar settings. So this
calender is nice to look at, but useless without notifications.
Comment 48 by JohnPolansky, Oct 19, 2009
I agree the contact lists on the android needs some updating it's rather behind the
times of existing contact systems like Windows Mobile. Birthday/Anniversary, and all
the extra fields should be imported otherwise what is the point of having them.
Comment 49 by SteveBillingsley, Oct 20, 2009
Birthdays also need be able to be entered from the Phone's contact list, not just from
Gmail on the computer!

Also, sports calendars do not show on the Phone's calendar! That, maybe more than
birthdays, is crucial!
Comment 50 by JohnPolansky, Oct 20, 2009
It's interesting I made the comment that birthdays and anniversaries are not showing
up in the contacts.. but now they are sorta.. I have a Sprint HTC Hero which has some
sort of facebook intergration with the contacts. I noticed that I do have a birthday
and anniversary field in my contacts when I edit them, but they do not actually sync
to google. So I'm guessing that HTC must have added these fields to the contacts.

It's still not a perfect solution, as I have to enter all the dates in both gmail
contacts and my android contacts. But the are there.
Comment 52 by A.Schmid, Nov 18, 2009
this would be a very nice to have.
Comment 53 by jerremyscott, Nov 19, 2009
I also would like this option.
Comment 54 by s0m3f00l, Nov 19, 2009
How could you forget this!??? You cant possibly expect me to remember birthdays in my
own head!
Comment 55 by luis.balbas, Nov 19, 2009
Its unbelieveble... Now Im triyng with the notifications on facebook application on
the HTC Hero.

There are two fields on contacts (brithday and annyversary) but cant find the way to
remember me these very importants days.. (Of course, i can enter one by one on
calendar.. but then why exists the fields on contact application? and let you sync
with facebook?) On saturday i will know if at least works with the facebook
integration and notifies me a friends birthday that i sync with facebook.

Its a basic feature!!!
Comment 56 by gennady.marchenko, Nov 25, 2009
You forgot it? I think that this feature is very important. After I tries to get it
in my phone, I found this issue.
Comment 57 by rachaelbrehm, Nov 25, 2009
Ditto OPs comments
Comment 60 by cybr.8ngl, Nov 29, 2009
Bump
Comment 61 by ebomike, Nov 29, 2009
Please don't post comments without any information here. All this does is spam people
who subscribed to this thread. This is not a chat forum!

As a temporary remedy, you can use the free EboBirthday app, which maintains
birthdays, adds them to the calendar, syncs them with google.com/contacts (or
gmail.com), imports them from Facebook, writes them back to the contacts' notes, etc.
Yes, I'm plugging my own app here, but it's really just meant as a interim solution
until there is native support for that in Android.

I'm pretty sure that Google is very much aware of the problem and working on it, it's
just a matter of time. As of now, please do not post "bump" and "ditto" comments, all
you do is spam the 300+ people who will get an annoying email every time you do so.
It won't make the Android team address the issue any faster.
Comment 62 by l11gctaylor, Dec 01, 2009
Absolutely necessary, I strongly dislike having to use a third party app to do this.
Comment 63 by Andrey.Solovyh, Dec 08, 2009
WinMobile has such common things like birthday
Comment 64 by Heta...@gmail.com, Dec 13, 2009
Now Google Can Recod Birthdate and Annivarsary in Contact Book and then you go to

http://calendar.google.com and Attach your Contact Birthday / Anniversary Calendar to
Normal View Immidiately your Calendar in Android will show allk Birthdate Recorded.

But i think they must allowed to add edit that dates from Android too.
Comment 65 by jkpatel79, Dec 16, 2009
on top of anniversary I would include Spouse's name field as well.
Comment 66 by ebomike, Dec 16, 2009
The most flexible solution would be to offer any number of additional fields as part
of the contact template, which could be "date", "string", "phone number", "email
address", "URL", "other contact", so that users can add whatever additional data they
want, so you could add "Spouse [other contact]", and for Spanish users, "Santos [date]".

(The only downside to a non-standardized template would be that it is harder for apps
to access that data.)
Comment 67 by Robert.Jaemmrich, Dec 16, 2009
Please do note that there is a "Contacts Data API"

http://code.google.com/apis/contacts/docs/3.0/reference.html

Android apps should fully support this before thinking of "additional fields" imho. :-)
Comment 68 by clcdan.clc, Dec 22 (5 days ago)
And let's PLEASE add Speed Dial! I don't see what code is used for that (for
instance, in a dialing string).

I just found out (and should not have HAD to on my own) how to put in a PAUSE and a
WAIT in the dialing strings!

Speaking of numbers, PLEASE add encrypted number hiding for dialing codes and
passcodes for PBX use - also with those MUTE DTMF automatically if "hidden", etc.
Even the old K2 does that!

Speaking of DTMF - PLEASE add user ability to change speed output of DTMF bursts!
Some systems do not handle those speeds, and in not-so-good calls, the bursts just
dont "get through" to the other end. I can't tel you how many times I have had VISA
and AMEX call me back as a "courtesy" only for me to sheepishly admit that I am using
a new phone that just can't handle such a simple thing.
