What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Reboot router
2. Works fine for a few hours (N client, WPA2/PSK/AES
3. Then intermittently becomes slow / fast and requires router reboot.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce problem.

Several customers has problem with adapters based on Atheros AR9285. It was
solved by installing latest Atheros drivers.
Which Wi-Fi adapter you are using?

The adapter uses a Ralink RT3070 chipset

I experienced something similar.
The slowness caused by the weak signal strength.
Nothing to do with the driver of the client card, I experienced this phenomenon
with three different chipset.
It is not necessary to reboot the router, the "wl down" and "wl up" commands do
the repair. After these commands the signal strength ok for a while.

jmerthj:

Are you use WPA2/PSK/AES like issue creator? Can you provide "wl status" output
in both cases - when signal is ok & not?

Seems to be problem is in new Broadcom SDK 5.60. Unfortunately there is no wl
driver sources in public access, so we will try to upgrade to newer Broadcom
SDK 5.100. It will take some time.

We can't rollback to old Broadcom SDK 5.10 due it don't support RT-N10U,
RT-N12B1 & newer devices.

I am using WPA2/PSK/AES too.

Here is the output of the "wl status" command when the signal is weak (RSSI =
-70 dBm at the client adapter):

SSID: "xxxxxxxx"
Mode: Managed RSSI: 0 dBm SNR: 0 dB noise: -83 dBm Channel: 12
BSSID: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx    Capability: ESS ShortSlot
Supported Rates: [ 1(b) 2(b) 5.5(b) 6(b) 9 11(b) 12(b) 18 24(b) 36 48 54 ]

After this I executed the "wl down" and "wl up" commands, and this is the
result of the "wl status" (RSSI = -43 dBm @ client):

SSID: "xxxxxxxx"
Mode: Managed RSSI: 0 dBm SNR: 0 dB noise: -82 dBm Channel: 12
BSSID: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx    Capability: ESS ShortSlot
Supported Rates: [ 1(b) 2(b) 5.5(b) 6(b) 9 11(b) 12(b) 18 24(b) 36 48 54 ]

Same problem here with 4051.
All works fine for about 40 mins, then all WiFi traffic became really slow
(even the WebGui). A router reboot will solve the problem until the next lock.
I'll try to go back to 3497 like in comment 10 or to an original Asus WL-500W
f/w (v 2.x or 3.x ???) to check if it's an hardware fault, cause my WL-500W is
very hot.

Wi-Fi works just fine for me on r4298, RSSI is around ~45-50 dBm. If I'm close
to router -28 dBm.

However I can't get 300mbit on intel 5300 with BCM43222, but it might be a
problem of backward compatability Broadcom chip with Intel.

Mmmm... just replaced my old WL500W with a new RT-N16, same problem with
r4051...
Now I'll move to r4298 just suggested.
I think it's officially a bug, cause I prepared RT-N16 manually, without upload
of settings/flashfs.

Thanks spameden for your help.
I've not yet flashed r4379, my experience is with latest official r4330 on
RT-N16.
The thing that is makin' me crazy is that wi-fi connection speed starts at
300Mbps and remain stable for about 40 mins, than jumps down up to 11Mbps. The
only way to have again a stable connection is to reboot the router. No
"strange" services (aMule, rtorrent and so on) running during my test.
Here attached you'll find 2 screenshots of my RT-N16 Wireless confiduration.
It's working as AP only (no bridge) and without MAC access control.

About my PC side, it's an HP Mini 210.
At office no problems at all, connection to an Apple Airport Extreme is really
stable even after many hours and with a lot of traffic.
Here is my HW/SW configuration for the NIC:

Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n
Driver version: 5.60.350.6

Advanced Settings:

802.11n Preamble: GreenField
Afterburner: Disabled
Roaming Association: Disabled
Bandwidth Capability: 11b/g 20/40MHz
BT-AMP: Enabled
Bluetooth Collaboration: Automatic
Minimun energetic consuption: Enabled
Roaming Decision: Default
MAC address: Not present
PLCP BSS: Auto (short/long)
AP Compatibility: Better throughouts
IBSS WZC channel number: 11
Path: USA
Output Power: 100%
Priority and VLAN: Disabled
Fragmentation: 2346
RTS: 2347
Mixed cells support: Disabled
Xpress Technology: Enabled
Roaming: Conservative
Speed: (802.11b/g): Better Speed
WMM: Automatic

Thanks again.

Your router settings for Wireless is fine.

Do you experience the same behaviour with any other device?

You might need to set WMM on your client card to On instead of Auto.

Bandwidth Capability: 40Mhz

I'm not sure about 'Xpress Technology' is it turned on by default?

A possible workaround is to restart wireless connection once in several
minutes. Not to do this manually I have written a script executing "wl down; wl
up" once in 5 minutes and an init script.
====
/opt/etc/init.d/S15wl_reset

#!/bin/sh
PIDFILE=/opt/var/run/wl_reset.pid
[ -f ${PIDFILE} ] && kill `cat ${PIDFILE}`
/opt/bin/wl_reset.sh&

====
/opt/bin/wl_reset.sh
#!/bin/sh

PIDFILE=/opt/var/run/wl_reset.pid
WL_LOG=/tmp/wl_reset.log

echo $$ > $PIDFILE;
while [ 1 ] ; do
        wl down 2>&1 >> $WL_LOG;
        wl up 2>&1 >> $WL_LOG;
        sleep 300 2>&1 >> $WL_LOG;
        echo "wl reset at "`date` >> $WL_LOG;
done
====
Hope that this will save somebody trouble.

LOL yeah nice workaround..

you'd drop all client connections with that script.

Just use instead 20Mhz Bandwidth instead of 40 - it might help.

I fully agree with you that the way it works is very stupid by design but it
solves the slowdown problem (the network works at least). As for the
connections dropping, I have not noticed any difference from the user's point
of view (thanks for the reliable communication protocol).
To sum up, you should use such method only as a very last resort.

I just wanted to confirm that r3497 is the firmware that does not show the
problem described above (RT-N16, WPA2/PSK,AES,20MHz, all clients with different
chipsets experience the same signal drop, slowdown/disconnect).
I tried several recent versions, including r4667 - the problem persists.

А если поставить 144 mbps (20Mhz) 802.11n тоже
отваливается?
============================================================

as you can see issue is quite old.

what's the type of your router?

the only thing you can do is to try r3497

on the another note, you can try combining r3497 wireless drivers into latest
trunk or r4667.

developers can't do anything with it because bug resides inside Broadcom's SDK.
(it might be in wl.ko as well, i'm not sure).
