The Tag Recommendation through Geographic Referencing (TRecGeo) project implements a system capable of suggesting descriptive tags to geospatially-referenced photos, by leveraging on tags frequently associated to Flickr photos taken at nearby locations. The system combines multiple estimators or tag relevancy, based on geospatial proximity, tag occurrence frequency, image similarity, collaborative tags usage and general photo interestingness.

Some publications describing the TRecGeo system include:

@inproceedings{Silva:2011:Machine,
 author = {Ana Silva and Bruno Martins},
 title = {{Recommending Tags to Georeferenced Photos}},
 booktitle = {Proceedings of the 3rd ACM SIGSPATIAL International Workshop on Location-Based Social Networks},
 year = {2011},
 location = {Chicago, Illinois, USA}
}

The TRecGeo system is being developed in the context of the SInteliGIS project financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through project grant PTDC/EIA-EIA/109840/2009. You might want to check the full list of software packages developed in the context of the SInteliGIS project.

A demonstration of the system was made available online through the Google App Engine and the system is also available from the Downloads page. See the Wiki for more information and tutorials.
