Welcome to Tidepool

Open standard next generation digital book format. The purpose of this project is to create a universal digital publication format that supports multimedia rich animated content as well as text only content.

About

The Tidepool project is dedicated to creating an open standard for an offline, multimedia, interactive digital book format. Digital books must evolve beyond simple digital copies of the old print on paper technology. It's also important to preserve the useful qualities that have made printed publications so useful and successful.

Goals

The development of an open standard which provides multimedia content and interactive features to digital publications. The standard also provides the same level of content support of existing standards such as epub. The project goals also include broader support for metadata standards to improve searches, organization, and usability. The improvements in metadata are intended to improve both computer processing of content as well as human uses for the metadata. A method of adding highlights, notes, and annotations which are not embedded into the content is an important requirement. Users should be able to share their notes, annotations and highlights without having to share any publication content. Users should also be able to create multiple sets of notes, annotations, and highlights 'sets' which are fully independent of each other.
