* I read everything above and have demonstrated this bug only occurs on 10.4Fx by testing against this official version of Firefox 4/up (not applicable for startup failure) - SPECIFY VERSION YOU TESTED AGAINST:

Very fundamental bug - 10.4.Fx crashes on all my Mac OS 10.4.11 Server Systems (9S2169) during printing of ANY web page (even the most simple HTML 404 error page). The problem can not be printer dependent (discovered it with two simple postscript network printers) but tested the generic save to PS-File option of the PDF button in the end.

Cross Testing against a modern Firefox is pretty pointless, but for the sake of completeness Firefox 3.6.28 on the same system prints and the problem does not occur with the latest Firefox 30 on a Snow Leopard System (Laptop) nor with the same 10.4.Fx Version on Leopard 10.5.8 Server (9L34) or any of my 10.4.11 Standard (8S165) Systems.

Three Systems tested with the crash: - Early G5, 1.8MHz single CPU, MacOS X Server 10.4.11 (8S2159), G5 Build of 10.4Fx. - Middle Aged G5, 2x2GHz dual CPU, MacOS X Server 10.4.11 (8S2159), G5 Build of 10.4Fx. - MacMini G4, 1.5GHz single CPU, MacOS X Server 10.4.11 (8S2159) 7450 Build of 10.4Fx.

* If this is a startup crash or failure to start, have you tried restarting with a clean profile or in safe mode? Does this fix the problem?

Could provide a load unlimited copy of Tiger SERVER from an EDU institution for the resolution of this test case because we are very interested in the resolution of this. We are close to legal vintage status with this OS anyhow.

I don't have any free systems here to put Tiger Server on, nor free space to set up a test system. If someone is already running this that can debug it, I will accept their patch, but I can't resolve this currently.

It is quite sad that some little bug sneaked in, that restricts the
fully functional browser to the standard edition only of 10.4. Tiger.
According to the design of the OS standard and server editions should
really be identical when it comes to basic function like screen
graphic and printing. I am quite surprised they are not.

Since in the EDU world we received unlimited licenses for the server
for free, we intalled servers by routine in many instances (i.e. when
file sharing was part of game because there are some near deadlocks
that kill sharing performance in the standard version of the OS X).

Regarding you suggestion that I fix the bug myself I wonder how
difficult it would be to download the source and build the actual Ten
Four Fox, since I am a computer architecture professor with decent
programming knowledge but fairly little experience in open software
or even Google Code building scripts. Which Version of xtools
(compilers) is normally used?

I can't quite believe that you don't have an 10GB spare room for a
Tiger Server partition on one of your development systems, since it
is quite easy with tools like iPartition to shink some partion and
put another one there.

But I do know that it is far more than an hour of work to do a
complete server install with all updates. I do have a fully installed
and updated 10.4.srv installation at hand on an external disk and
would be able to send you a fully installed configured disk image.
Internet is so powerful those days that I could simply upload the
*.dmg on my server in Michigan. Just tell me which xtools you require
and I can put a complete 10.4.srv there to be downloaded. It will
take an hour in the background but download with little effort.

Thomas, attachments to Google's bugs get filtered over E-mail. You need to attach them through the web interface.

I have exactly one development system (the quad I'm typing this on); the others are test machines which also serve other roles. I keep another quad as a spare, but it is not usually hooked up. I think we're going to disagree on this point, but I'm not going to go find space to set up another machine and/or completely reconfigure this one to solve this problem. This is a project I do in my spare time to keep my computers working, and while I endeavour to fix bugs other people report, I don't find the request reasonable. I'm sorry if you disagree.

That said, I'm not necessarily saying you need to fix the bug, but you're exactly the first person I've heard from who's even using the browser with Tiger Server. There may be others, but in four years of this project, you're the first to make any report. We do have build instructions, but you need an updated compiler, debugger and bintools on top of Xcode. You might also consider looking at old versions to see when things changed. Since 3.6 works, you may need to start with 4.0. Bear in mind old versions may corrupt your profile, so you should back up the Application Support/Firefox folder if you decide to check into this.

I'm leaving the bug open to see if another individual has the same problem. However, unless I suddenly find a need to run Server myself, it won't be me that fixes it. Sorry.

well I did attach the the crash log over the Web interface filing the
bug report. I attached it gzipped to make it a shorte attachment,
maybe it got overlooked because of that zip.

Well I will try to build firefox on my sample server image and see
what could go wrong on server.

Tracking what was going on looks quite ugly to me. It is the nasty
middleware and framework trap of software development, you program at
a nice higher abstraction level but when something goes wrong you are
debugging with at the lowest level, mostly with some part of the (OS
Library) source missing.

Yep, the null pointer reference is where the bomb finally explodes.
The question is where the firefox code lits the powder fuze. Since
the 10.4 server and standard OS kernels only differ in extreme
subtleties like e.g. a more precise task scheduler in the server, I
would expect an extremely hidden issue to cause this.

I might have some time over the weekend to take a look - since our
state here was born on an 1st od August rather than a 4th of July :-).
