Product Tagging in Substruct
Updated Feb 4, 2010 by subim...@gmail.com

What are Tags?

Tags allow you to categorize products in your online store.

How do I use them?

You can add multiple tags to any of your products, which will allow your users to find them better.

By default the online store your customers see will show all of your products if you haven't yet assigned any Tags. Once you assign Tags to your products you will see a Tag listing in your online store.

Products on your front page will be randomly selected, OR chosen from the list of "featured products" you select on the Admin site.

Your customers will then be able to click on each Tag name and view products assigned that Tag. At this point the Tag listing will also be updated, showing other tags assigned to the products shown. This way your customers can find products in many different ways, instead of using only one path.

Ideas for Tags

Of course you will probably want to create all of the usual Tags for your products, but what about getting creative?

Let's assume you're running an online shoe store. You could probably create the following tags:

  • Running Shoes
  • Basketball Shoes
  • Tennis Shoes
  • Boots
  • Sandals
  • etc...

But what about tags like this?

  • Under $50
  • Under $20
  • Under $10
  • Blue Shoes
  • Red Shoes
  • etc...

Assigning multiple tags to your shoes would allow customers to find the ones important to them. Getting ideas for your store yet?

What about having deeper nesting of tags? I.e. more than 2 levels to allow for

Shoes > Pricerange > Brand

or

Shoes > Brand > Pricerange

What about a more modular system which would let you display some or all permutations. I.e. they could have a dropdown to select which "tag chain" to use.

Shoes > Brand > Pricerange
Shoes > Pricerange > Brand
Brand > Shoes > Pricerange
Brand > Pricerange > Shoes
Pricerange > Shoes > Brand
Pricerange > Brand > Shoes

There has been a patch that was produced in early December to support infinite levels of tags. Search the mailing list and you will find it. It might fit your needs.
