Issue 7: Dental station setup

What's the progress on this? Users' suggestion: physical set-up which
considers natural operating position

Currently working on sound, once that's complete I'll investigate this.

I think it'll be one of two possibilities:
1) If we can use Brian's idea and add a second mirror to the current setup we can
have a natural operating position for the low cost systems
2) If we can't use the planar monitors for colocation then we can't have stereo and
collocation on the low cost systems. We could still put together a mono collocated
system if it would be worth the effort.

I've had a meeting with the Clinical Skills Manager at the Guy's tower where we
would install the PHANTOM Units. She has some concerns with the tabletop space where
the PHANTOM would sit.
Could you please let me know if the Physical setup would still change. If so,
please send the dimension ASAP. I also need info about the power each PC is using
for risk assessment requirments.

Basically, if the systems aren't collocated then the components won't change much
but the layout probably will. If I remember correctly those desks were much too high
to work comfortably at with a Falcon on top. I had in my mind a set up with the
monitor on the table top and the Falcon down in front of the table at a similar
height they are used to working at.

If they are to be collocated then they'll be a bit bigger, though I had still
planned to have whatever monitor is used on the table and the Falcon between the
students knees, there would also be a mirror somewhere halfway between.

Off the top of my head I would say 500 Watts for a computer, two LCDs and the
Falcon. That's very much a guesstimate though, I'll measure it and get back to you.

We need to make a final decision about this. I am going to arrange a meeting with
Mark and the clinical skills lab. Maybe we could bring a measuring tape to measure
the dimension so that you guys can think about the engineering of a table-mount.

I have sent Ally the physical layout of the clinical skills lab. Could you please
update as to whether are still purchasing planar or not? I have attached a photo of
the worktop at the Clinical skills lab.

Don't buy the monitors yet. I think the only likely fallout of waiting as long as
possible is that they either get cheaper or something better comes out. It's best not
to commit to anything until we have to.

As requested, updating the current status of the workstation hardware:

The waiting may have paid off…

A new kind of LCD monitor has been released which may allow us to make the system
both simpler and collocated.

To test this Reading have order one of these new monitors from the US (not released
in UK yet) on a separate budget. This is because regardless of whether the monitor
meets the needs of the Phantom it will still be used by Reading on other projects
and does not affect the Phantom budget.

Assuming the new monitor will be shipped to the UK (not confirmed by the supplier
yet though payment has been accepted) there will be two version of the second
prototype constructed, 2A and 2B.

The first (2A), under construction at the moment, will be based on the Planar Stereo
screen. It will be free standing rather than table mounted but not collocated.

Once this is in place in Guy’s a second, very similar version (2B) will be
constructed based on the new monitor when it arrives. Also, any changes that have
come to light when using 2A can be incorporated into 2B.

It is hoped that the final version (3A), which will be the template for duplication,
will be based on those features of 2A and 2B considered most desireable.
