Russian graphics are subpar; translation errors #863

While I'm in no way to criticize Kirill Grigoriev for his work on the Russian
version, I've noticed that most of the Russian graphics are below par (i.e. as
if made with Paint, dragging a blank rectangle over the previous text and
typing in the new one.) This requires a complete overhaul of the graphics,
which I can do alone. Question is: do I need any permission to do this, and if
yes, will it be given to me?

The second issue is trickier: although I can't speak proper Russian, I noticed
some translation errors, both in the interface and in the cutscenes. Some of
these hinder the player's understanding of the story or game mechanics too
(e.g. "reestablish" in place of "undamaged", "aim" instead of "retreat", "a lot
of robots were made this year" in place of "a lot of robots were made over the
years", etc.)
Now, I can't fully vouch for the incorrectness of these translations, but they
seem suspicious to me.

Anyway, with this I just meant that if anyone happens to come across a Russian
speaker who can double-check the translations, please ask them to do so.

Hi. The russian graphics comes from the original unofficial (and indeed poor)
russian translation and it was probably made via Paintbrush; but I did many
Paint job myself. Feel free to take the images of any other language. I can't
exactly remember, but there might be some already empty images for buttons
somewhere.

As for the russian text/voice in cutscenes, I don't know what the voice says
and we don't have russian subtitles yet.

It would be great if you could take the time and do some fixes/translation. You
don't need to do many (as it usually scares away contributors), just a few
outstanding ones. You can send the result to me via email or upload into this
issue (see Attach a file below the comment box).

I've actually done some work beforehand. Just for my own amusement.

Attached my progress on the graphics, in the folder named "ruimg.rar". This
will have to be extracted, the folder renamed "ru" and pasted in the images'
ZIP file. [The graphics aren't nearly perfect, but they're better than the
previous version.)

As a bonus, I've also attached my progress on the subtitles. (I've started
transcribing them to practice my Russian and improve. Who knows when one needs
to command a fleet of spaceships?) Anyway, there are many errors in the
subtitles. No, this is not "might be many errors", I've actually marked the
places where I have no idea what they're saying with varying amounts of
question marks. (The number indicates my level of having no idea of what the
VAs actually say.)

The folder containing subtitles is the one named rutext. You probably know
this, but it's to be extracted, renamed "ru" and pasted in the "upgrade" folder.

Thank you, I'll integrate them tomorrow. I can't give a release date yet
because I'd like to release something of a value myself (perhaps spying) so you
have plenty of time available. In addition, I'd like to put you into the
credits, so please tell me how can I mention you there?

Alright, I've finished up all the images. There may still be translation and/or
editing errors or inconsistencies (e.g. different sized fonts that are supposed
to be the same size, etc.), but it's good enough, I guess.

(EDIT: Had to fix overlapping graphics. Hopefully everything is readable now.)

Thanks for the changes. I've released version 0.95.176 with the updated
graphics and subtitles.

While the first part of the issue has been fixed, the second part (the errors
in translation) are still there. I wouldn't call this 'fixed', and this may
give the impression that all the errors have been fixed as well.

I'd either reopen and defer the issue or make a separate one for the
translation.

Attached is the full subtitling for the Russian version, timed and everything.
I also changed a few things with the buttons, so "active" says "active" now and
not "enable!", among other things.

I also heard a Spanish translation is being made. I can help with repainting
the buttons and I can try pasting together the BGM without speech for the
cutscenes, but since I know minimal Spanish, I can't help with the actual
translation work.

Thank you for your efforts. I'll add the changes next Monday.

There was someone a few months ago who offered help with the Spanish
translation, but haven't heard of him since. If you want, you can paint the
buttons, but I don't speak Spanish either so unless you do, I can't help you
with what text should be on the buttons.

No, I can only repaint the buttons if someone tells me what to write.

However, my second offer still stands: I could try pasting together the BGM for
cutscenes [from parts where the actors don't speak], so that it can be
voice-acted on. It would make any future translations easier, I think. (I also
have some composing experience, so I could recreate the parts that can't be
pasted together.)

Unfortunately, voiceover is way harder to produce in quality: standard PC
microphones don't produce clean enough voice. One needs some
(semi-)professional voice recording studio. I'd say don't bother with it.

I don't think minor static would be that much a problem. A much bigger problem
was the unfitting music (see the russian "win" video, where the only thing the
translators could paste over and over was the first 5 seconds where there
should be triumphant music)

I've uploaded the changes into SVN. We have some developments going on right
now so the release may take a few days.
