What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. run marave without install by 'python main.py'
2. alt+tab to bring it to the foreground cause it starts behind all
windows ;-P
3. see the white background instead of an image (but ui works fine)

after clicking the ui button to switch the background the images load fine

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
marave ver 0.1.1, Kubuntu 9.10 amd64

These are two different problems.

About the "it starts behind all windows", what window manager are you uing?

About the white background:

Is the background ok the next time you start marave? What's the output on the
terminal?

I'm using KDE 4.3 with kwin desktop effects.

After another run, the program loads the previous settings, so the background is ok,
so the white background appears only on the first run. I can't find where the
settings are kept, so I can't delete them to double check this right now.

Ok, the settings are in ~/.config/NetManagers/Marave.conf and it's a simple-ish INI
format.

Could you try removing that file and starting again to see if you get the "white
background" behaviour again, and post the output?

Confirmed, with no setting the starting background is just white.

terminal output:
lukkorp@lukkorp-laptop:~/Tools/marave/marave-0.1.1/marave$ python ./main.py
Spellchecking enabled
STYLE: 0
Setting spellchecker to: None
Disabling spellchecker

SVN revision 89 behaves the same.
