Fount Enclosure Design

Purpose

The fountain enclosure design protects the fountain circuitry while enhancing the MAGE adventure with a stunning visual experience.

Design

Our primary fountain design (Figure 1 below) features a plastic bird bath supporting a second, makeshift fountain tier. The bird bath is 25 inches high, with a basin diameter of 17 inches, and weighs less than 10 pounds 1. The basin is detachable and the base can be filled with material in order to reach a desired weight.

Figure 2 below shows the upper tier design, which is composed of two stacked bowls, the outer bowl being 10 inches in diameter and the inner bowl being 8 inches in diameter. The inner bowl contains a ring (or shell) of exposed IR receivers and RFID tag. This upper tier accommodates the ‘pouring’ action of the opposing team’s cup

The upper tier is supported by three hollow PVC tubes (Figure 3 below), about 1 inch in diameter and 12”” in height. The upper tier circuitry is configured between the outer bowl and the inner bowl and is wired out of the outer bowl and through the PVC tubing, connecting to the microcontroller within the basin of the fountain.

The extra 18 inches in height provided by the upper tier increases the total height of the fountain to about 42 inches, allowing a player of average height to complete the ‘pouring’ action without the need to bend at the waist.

As can be seen in Figure 4 below, the fountain’s partner cup should sit within the holder in the center of the basin. Each fountain will contain a unique pattern of connectors which will uniquely identify the fountain’s partner cup.

A blue panel (Figure 5 below) should rest inside the basin, leaving a hollow cave underneath. The purpose of this panel will be to enclose the circuitry underneath and also to give the appearance of water inside of the basin. The exact dimensions of the panel will depend on the depth of the fountain basin which is unknown at this point in time.
