What Version of iTiVo?
1.7.6
What Version of MacOS X?
10.7.1
What download format did you select?
Custom MPEG2
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Select an external drive for download location.
2. Download show
3. Show is downloaded to application drive until after encoding (I can see disk space drop by size of download).

Please provide any additional information below.
I am wondering where the iTivo download cache is. I ask iTivo to save to a large external drive, but while it downloads, it saves it somewhere on my small internal drive. I'd also like to see if there are interrupted downloads that are cluttering up my drive.

I would also like to know where this cache is. I've been experiencing failed downloads that I think are somewhere on my hard drive taking up space.

It seems to use /tmp/iTiVo-$(whoami) eg, if your username is 'tony' it'll be /tmp/iTiVo-tony.

If you know the mounted path to your external hard drive, you can force iTiVo to use that as a cache drive with the following commands in Terminal:

rm -rf /tmp/iTiVo-$(whoami)
mkdir /Volumes/ExternalDrivePath/iTiVo-workingDir
ln -s /Volumes/ExternalDrivePath/iTiVo-workingDir /tmp/iTiVo-$(whoami)

They remove the existing iTiVo working directory, create a working directory on your external drive, then link the iTiVo working directory to the external drive path. Of course "ExernalDrivePath" needs to be replaced with the actual path to your external drive (sorry, that's not something I can automate for you, issue "ls /Volumes" if you want to see what the options are, perhaps you'll recognize something)
