BYLAW VI - Elections

Section I Qualifications for Candidacy

A candidate for office shall be a member of a full member chapter. Nominated and Seconded by two houses in good standing holding full member status (one of the two houses can be the house that the candidate is a member of). He will be planning to be a student of RPI for the full calendar year term of his office, and shall meet all other requirements stated here in the Bylaws or in the Constitution, or any other IFC document.

Section II - Nomination and Election Procedure

Nominations and Elections occur early in the fall semester for the upcoming year’s executive board positions to allow for a successful and smooth officer transistion period where effective training can occur before the new executive board assumes their offices. The following timeline starts at the first Wednesday of October.

  • Week 1: Beginning First Wednesday of October
    1. Wednesday: IFC Meeting during Week 1:
    2. Nominations are opened by Executive Vice President for all elected Executive Board Positions. Secretary is responsible for sending out notification to all members in full standing that nominations for executive board positions are opened before Friday of Week 1. All candidates need to fulfill all qualifications put forth in BYLAW VI: Section 1: Qualifications for Candidacy
  • Week 2: Beginning Second Wednesday of October
    1. Wednesday: IFC Meeting during Week 2
    All candidates are expected to attend this meeting unless given prior approval from the outgoing executive board Executive Vice President announces the last call for Nominations during his report. The Executive Vice President motions to close nominations if there are no objections. After all officer and committee reports are finished the “Introductory Phase” of elections occurs. Each candidate receives two minutes to present a introduction him/herself. Every candidate is suggested to stay in the room to listen to the who the various candidates running for all positions are
    1. Thursday: Candidate, Delegate, and Institute Dinner
    The dinner on the Thursday after nominations are completed is for the candidates and current executive board to get to know each other and build connections. See Guideline on Candidate, Delegate, and Institute Dinner
  • Week 3: Elections
  • Each Candidate gets a five (5) minute speech and a question and answer period for each position. Nominations are cascading. See BYLAW VI Elections: Section II Voting Procedures
  • Week 4 until Two (2) weeks before finals: Shadow Period
  • Current Executive Board still holds the position responsibilities until two weeks before finals. Only the outgoing executive board officers can report until the position-elect is inaugurated. Position-Elects cannot report during the officer reporting period The current Executive board members train the position-elects through out this period
  • Two weeks before finals: Inauguration and Culmination

The current executive board goes through a culmination process. The position elects are inaugurated by the outgoing executive board. Standard Operating Procedures and relevant files are given to the new executive board by the outgoing executive board. This process is overseen by a representative from the AIGC and the institute.

Section III: Voting Procedures

All elections for officers shall be held by secret ballot. Candidates shall be elected by a simple majority of votes cast. If none of the candidates win a majority of votes, the candidate with the least number of votes shall be dropped, and another vote will be taken.

Section IV: Filling Vacancies

All vacancies shall be filled by election within two meetings after the vacancy is created.

Section V: Impeachment Process

Any officer may be impeached for failure to carry out his duties. He can be impeached by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of the full members. An officer will be removed by a three-quarters (3/4) vote of the full members after an impeachment hearing.

Section VI: Term of Office

Executive Board positions terms are from December to December, with the terms beginning and ending two weeks before finals, unless the officer is impeached or resigned from office during their term.
