What steps will reproduce the problem?

  1. I use the authenticator to generate the code
  2. I use it to authenticate Gmail by entering the code in the Firefox browser. It doesn't work.
  3. I choose send code to mobile option then i am able to authenticate.

What is the expected output? : Should authenticate the code and allow access to Gmail.

What do you see instead? Error appears code invalid.

Thank you for the report! Here is a list of typical issues that may be causing this:

  1. The time is off on your Android. Authenticator's codes are time-dependent. To check/fix the issues go to Authenticator's Settings -> Time correction for codes -> Sync now. It'll tell you whether this was the issue, and, if it was, the issue will have been corrected (without adjusting the time on your phone -- only in the app itself). More information: https://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?answer=2653433&p=timesync
  2. The secret key from which Authenticator generates the codes for your account is wrong (as in, not the same as registered in Google for your account). This could happen if another Authenticator app/device was registered for your account after you scanned/entered the key on your Android. To fix the issue, go to https://accounts.google.com on a desktop/tablet, go to Security -> 2-step verification (Edit) -> click Remove/Replace in the "Mobile application" row, scan the QR code using Google Authenticator on your Android (Authenticator -> Add account -> Scan barcode) and follow the rest of the instructions.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I have been struggling with two-step authentication for months now, and was about to drive myself up to Mountain View and beg for someone's help to log me into my email account. I could see email on my phone, but for the life of me, it rejected all phone, and Google Authenticator codes. But I read your post about the time-sync issue possibility and noticed my iPhone was off my computer's time by 3 minutes (how that happened, who knows). But once I fixed the time on my phone to the exact time, it finally accepted my code! Thank you so much. I wanted to respond, in case anyone else was going crazy trying to get their authenticator to work.
