I and a lot of people really need this as can be seen in this thread. Please at least someone respond so that we know this is the best avenue to get things changed.

The problem gets worse because of the fact that apps script will automatically give edit" permissions to all ranges when you add new editors through addEditors(email).
If you just add an editor to a spreadsheet with existing protected ranges, those ranges do not get edit permissions for the new editor. If apps script's addEditor would behave like that, we could use preconfigured spreadsheet templates that already have the range permissions needed, and we could make copies of the templates.

pw...@gmail.com <pw...@gmail.com> #50
Yes, this would be a useful feature. Here are two ideas that I believe would go a long way toward alleviating the pain that we experience when stamping out multiple spreadsheets with (even moderately) complex range permissions:
1. Provide a way to change permissions of groups in bulk. I have a spreadsheet that needs to be replicated which has 64 ranges that need to be protected. Changing permissions one-by-one takes approximately 25 minutes with the current workflow. A simple screen displaying the matrix of users and ranges, and providing the ability to set permissions for each intersection would reduce this to a 3 minute exercise.
2. I'm sure this request is logged elsewhere, but if we had the ability to register non-contiguous named ranges, then we could reduce the number of ranges that need to be configured, which would also alleviate the workflow problem.

I need to permanently lock cells down so no one can modify it. In your case, removing data validation from this cell, unlock it. That could be done by anyone. We don't someone modify the costing sheet without permission. In this case Protected Range is the only solution, unfortunately all sharing settings are clear when document submitted to Google Templates and only way to recreate those sharing settings are onOpen trigger, when document is being selected by user. Unfortunately there is no API to support this functionality. The other reason to go back to Excel & Outlook.

I thought I'd share a workaround that helps in some small set if use-cases.
If you programmatcically insert a column or row inbetween a manually locked range the newly inserted cells that fall within the locked range are also locked.
This way if your use case involves locking of newly created cells, you may create a template sheet, lock a range in it and then create the new cells within that range.
Hope this helps someone.

Just checked the add-ons store, only 37 add-ons for spreadsheets. If there was the ability to run the script as owner to allow the edit of protected ranges, I would add 3 add-ons in the next 3 months. Each one could change the way google spreadsheets are used. I have too many ideas for Google not to implement this.
th...@gmail.com <th...@gmail.com> #102
Ability to edit protected ranges as the owner is not with this issue is about. It is about setting the protected ranges to begin with. It has been two years since it has been filed and yet this obviously important functionality has still not been implemented. Even when Google released a new version of Spreadsheets that completely revised how Protected Ranges work (yet still not making it a bit unintuitive to use, needing to save it like 3 times before it is accepted) this was left untouched.
Has anyone found a good workaround? I have tried data validation but this doesn't prevent adding/removing rows/columns. Neither does an onEdit trigger writing back any information. I tried not copying the spreadsheet but the invididual sheets to an existing spreadsheet, without the desired effect. In fact, this doesn't copy the protected ranges at all, not even without protection. There just does not seem to be a way to have a script make a duplicate of a spreadsheet without breaking the cell protection.

I teach a "community college" class in starting a business (actually TAFE in Australia). So I'm in front of probably 120 people a year. The Excel spreadsheet I use imports nicely into Google Docs. With millions of users... and only a few hundred people needing, its no wonder. But it really sucks. Google sheets could rule the sheet world if this glaring problem were fixed. You have got to be able to easily lock down a sheet except for the cells that the user is allowed to change.. its crazy to develop something and then discover you can not prevent users from whacking formulas in adjacent cells. Especially since the cursor advances to the next cell if you enter data. So users are stepping on formulas in the cells they are not supposed to be touching. DOUBLE DUH!!

add the damn feature. currently you can edit the permissions of protected ranges only by clicking on each range, then on each userm, then selecting an option, then clicking ok, then clicking ok again, then clicking ok again. this is idiotic. the main scenario for protected ranges is to protect formula ranges. why not allow the administrator to select multiple ranges and edit permissions for the entire batch? or at least make this accessible through the api! i've already had to convert everything to array formulas to get around the fact that range protection prohibits sorting etc. but the permissions wtf is impossible to get around.

Today, we have launched the ability to programmatically create and manipulate protected ranges and protected sheets with Apps Script.
With the new Protection class in the Spreadsheet service, your scripts can touch every aspect of range or sheet protection, just like in the new UI. (The older PageProtection class, which had more limited features, will be deprecated, but will stick around in case you need to work with older spreadsheets. The new Protection class only applies to the newer version of Sheets.)
You can find more details here:
http://googledevelopers.blogspot.com/2015/02/control-protected-ranges-and-sheets-in.html
https://developers.google.com/apps-script/releases/#february_2015
https://developers.google.com/apps-script/reference/spreadsheet/protection

Hello guys, great work really !
It would still a little cool feature to add ... I want to say about the cells excluded from the protection of the sheet, there should be the possibility for the owner or editors, so users can not change the format or data validation just have the ability to enter data and that's enough ...
It would be really "user friendly"
Thank you again for that

One thing more awesome and very nice ... would be to add a feature to protect the user against himself for complex formulas as exist natively on other spreadsheets. It's very useful in daily work... you didn't think that ?
Thank you again for your work !

Good work!
It would be even better if the protection could be applied on the Owner and Editor, or at lease the Editor.
Thanks again.

As well said above "the protection could be applied on the Owner", this feature is really lacking for protected spreadsheets very useful way in the daily work ...
Thanks you again ...

It should be possible to make protection a lot more precise: if you just want to give editor rigths to a user for a certain range in a sheet (and nothing more), he can edit script code, alter the name of the spreadsheet itself, ....

When I DUPLICATE the sheet, it doesn't copy the range protections. This feature is very important for me to use for my volunteers. I have to recreate the same Sheet every week and the protections to not copy.
jf...@gmail.com <jf...@gmail.com> #190
When an editor make a copy of the spreadsheet, then he becomes the owner of that copy. The protected ranges are still there, but the new owner gets the rights to edit/write in the protected range. It wold be nice to keep the new owners/copies with the same unaltered permission structure.

What is the point of protecting the spreadsheet if anyone can 'Make a Copy'
and gain full access to edit the document ? Isn't the point of protection
to protect the document from change ? so the integrity of the spreadsheet
remains intact. This seems like a great oversight and needs to be reviewed
to provide users with an option / choice of how they wish to share sheets
with others. Disappointed.

#189 It seems you need to create a new issue

This is international and not necessarily a bug or problem. If I make a template someone is supposed to eventually use and manipulate for their own purposes then I want them to gain all the protections including the right to edit the template. If I want to use the sheet as an input then I protect it from copying and simply send a link to what is effectively a complex form.

I agree. this is an oversight. Please update so protected sheets can be copied and keep their protections and formatting.
