This would provide us possibility to use animations, custom marker fade-in's and more advanced stuff on icon rendering.

Would the ability to supply a UIView for the marker not provide even more flexibility?

This would be great as a normal UIImageView, or a UIView. The static non-refreshyness is the main problem (for me) with the current situation.
