Issue 2487: Automatically track which files have been visited already
Status:  Released
Owner: ----
Closed:  May 2014
Reported by birgit.v...@gmail.com, Feb 19, 2014
In Gerrit 2.6, "reviewed and next" was an easy way to mark each visited file, and we therefore often (ab)used the "reviewed" flag to track which files have already been looked at.

In Gerrit 2.8, since "reviewed and next" is deprecated, this now requires twice as many clicks and a lot more thinking. (Not to mention that it is not the intended usage.)

Feature request:
Add a flag "viewed" that is set automatically when the diff view of a file is opened for the first time, so that it is easy to see which files have already been looked at.

Alternatively:
Toggle the "reviewed" checkbox to true automatically when the diff view of a file is opened. (Preferably with a user setting to turn this behaviour on or off.)

I believe this feature exists already. Have you tried setting 'Mark Reviewed' in your diff preferences to 'Automatic'?

Following the instructions in https://code.google.com/p/gerrit/issues/detail?id=2165 , I changed to the old ChangeScreen in order to see the diff preferences at all. I still cannot find 'Mark Reviewed' in those diff preferences, though... ? (See screenshot.) Am I looking at the wrong preferences section?

That's the right place. This setting is called 'Manuel Review' in the old diff screen preferences. If you want automatic setting, this checkbox should not be selected (as in screenshot). With current master the diff preferences are available also with the new side by side diff screen and there it's called 'Mark Reviewed'.

On Gerrit 2.8.1, disabling "Manual Review" (like in the screenshot) and then switching back to the new ChangeScreen2 does _not_ have the desired result. It only works as expected as long as the old ChangeScreen is used.

Given that the release of 2.9 appears to be close and will fix this, I think it is not worth putting any effort into fixing it for 2.8.1, though.

Thanks for the quick answer!
