When using submodules, it's not really clear what's changing to the reviewer. Sure, there's the sha1 and you know the repo from .gitmodules, but cloning that repo and checking the sha1 requires a couple of extra steps. This causes reviewer anxiety and leads to people not wanting to use submodules ("they're too opaque").

If the submodule in question is also managed by Gerrit, it would be nice if we could provide at least a link to the repo browser, if not an actual diff.

I've thought about this recently too.  I believe gitk shows the single-line summary of changes to the submodule brought in my the commit?  Something like that would be very helpful - making links to the gerrit changes would be far better.
