Issue 1655: Gerrit documentation on working with existing repositories is non-existent
Status:  New

2.5

What steps will reproduce the problem?

Setup gerrit and then try to import your existing repositories.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

I would expect that a common use case for the community would be trying to install gerrit into a site where there are already a significant number of existing repositories. In my particular use case, I have git repositories spanning 6 major release cycles (release/vX.Y style branched repositories). Along with many feature/name style repositories, etc. I would love to move these over and have gerrit help do the mediation for commits going to these repositories but the section in the documentation describing how to work with existing repositories is a single small paragraph. Some further context and perhaps a few concrete examples would go a long ways in helping others migrate to gerrit.

Perhaps providing a demo set of repositories that one can use to sandbox there gerrit migration, along with supporting documentation, would be the best route.

Personally, I find that these types of things are barriers for me to even consider moving forward with migrating to a new tool/utility/service. If gerrit had this type of documentation I think it would make it more attractive to a wider audience.
