Reported by paroga@paroga.com, Apr 17, 2011
Affected Version: 2.1.6.1

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Use auth.type = HTTP
2. Open http://server/gitweb?p=project.git

What is the expected output?
gitweb for project

What do you see instead?
HTTP ERROR: 404

Please provide any additional information below.
When you use HTTP auth and open gitweb directly _before_ opening gerrit (so that you don't call http://server/login/ gerrits gitweb shows "HTTP ERROR: 404". Gerrit should redirect to the login page before showing this error.

Agreed, 404 is very misleading for this behaviour. 403 (Forbidden) would be more accurate in the short term, but yes a 401 Auth required prompt would be the ideal mechanism.

If I might give my opinion:
I like to be redirected on the home “http://server/#” or to the “Sign In” box instead.

With a 404 I thought that the server wasn’t available and I called our Help-Desk.
