I got an email that said "Anonymous Coward has submitted this change and it FAILED to merge."

Sounds like they didn't set their full name, or maybe Gerrit couldn't otherwise find it.

I think username or email address would be a much better fallback in this case.

We also experienced this problem a few times with our internal Gerrit Server. Some users complained about being named 'Anonymous Coward' in the e-mail notification. For these users we are sure that name and e-mail address are set correctly, since normally the e-mail notifications for the same users contain the correct name.

Just guessing, can this be a consequence of issue 664 [1]?
Issue 664 is about a NullPointerException where Guice fails to inject the CurrentUser. As a result it might fall back to 'Anonymous Coward' as user name.

Looks like this problem was not related to issue 664 .
I've now uploaded a fix for code review:

We're getting this too for "FAILED to merge". It's disconcerting when we're trying out a new system.
