issue 1848 requested that the key be disabled entirely. that might be great for some people, but i find the opposite behavior to be incredibly annoying. it's pretty common in native apps and web sites for escape to active that default "cancel" behavior. removing it means we have to resort to the mouse or more keystrokes to navigate the UI.

can we at least make it into an option ?

For the record, here is what I expect:

- In text entry, <esc> moves tab focus out of the text entry box, so I can navigate the page.

- If hit <esc> in a text entry box, and all my beautiful typing disappears, I'm really mad. <ctl>-z had better restore it.

- In text entry, if I want to cancel my typing, I expect '<ctl>-a <backspace>' to accomplish it.

- I only expect <esc> to have 'Abort! Abort!' behavior in modal dialogs.

Given the divergence of opinion, maybe optioning it would be best.

In the long term, we need to save cancelled comments in a way that they can be easily revived. But that takes coding.
