OpenID authentication works well in the browser but the workflow is not as nice in rich clients such as Mylyn. To provide rich client users with a simple login mechanism I would like to suggest to (optionally) support authentication through username and HTTP password.

This would require users to register and sign-in through the browser once, generate the HTTP password and copy it to their rich client. That way all browser interaction would happen outside of the rich client.

Rich clients can authenticate with the HTTP Password token on /a/* REST API URLs.
