When making repositories we may need to later rename those (there is some work on getting the project rename support included) and a beneficial feature would be alias support.

Github supports it in a very use-friendly way[1]

1. https://help.github.com/articles/renaming-a-repository/

Basically:

"In addition to redirecting web traffic, all git clone, git fetch, or git push operations targeting the previous location will continue to function as if made on the new location."

This appears to be a duplicate of Issue 560

Not exactly; the renaming is part of the issue and the aliasing is another step.
