I would be really nice if developers could add their own captions and subtitles
through the youtube API. Are you planning to make such type of thing in future?

I vote too in favor of this change
li...@gmail.com <li...@gmail.com> #9
API to add/delete annotations would be great.

I am trying to conduct research on developing youtube as an educational platform, but
this inability to download the annotations file is holding up research. Is there
anyone who could answer the question (can we access the annotations file?) or steer
me in the right direction to someone else who can?

it would be great to have access to the annotations, read and write.
an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #13
Even read-only access to video annotations would be helpful.
ha...@gmail.com <ha...@gmail.com> #14

om...@gmail.com <om...@gmail.com> #15
Bump! +1 to everything and a creation API would be greatly welcome too...
ri...@gmail.com <ri...@gmail.com> #16
I'd also love to see a way to embed the annotator flash in 3rd party sites!
be...@gmail.com <be...@gmail.com> #17
Yep, me too.. +1 as well!
mu...@gmail.com <mu...@gmail.com> #18
+1 on reading / writing (especially writing) annotations API. I am automatically adding videos to youtube. Being able to add annotations to them as well would be fantastic (now I'm kind of hacking around it using the captions api, but it's not the same).
ri...@gmail.com <ri...@gmail.com> #19
That would help a lot.
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #20
Much needed feature
ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #21

be...@gmail.com <be...@gmail.com> #22
I upload lots of video per day, it'd be nice if this task can be done automatically.
gi...@gmail.com <gi...@gmail.com> #23

ri...@googlemail.com <ri...@googlemail.com> #24
I'd also like to see Annotation management with the API.
ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #25
I found a website that offers it as a service - no need to use the API - http://www.AutoAnnotate.com
va...@gmail.com <va...@gmail.com> #26
I Need writing annotations with the API. We are automatically adding videos to youtube and being able to add annotations to them would be great
ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #27
+1 on this feature being added soon. 15% of my current viewership is annotations on vids pointing to other vids of mine. It takes hourrrrrrrrrrrrrrs every week to keep up with annotations on new vids.
Oh and AutoAnnotate, along with one other web page I know of, no longer work for adding annotations en masse.

I use the YouTube API to upload video's to several accounts, and I want to add a watermark to them automatic as soon it is uploaded. But no API :(
la...@gmail.com <la...@gmail.com> #29
+1 I want to add a 'watermark' annotation to every video (uploaded trough the API) so i really need this!!!
And at the moment AutoAnnotate doesn't work :(

pe...@gmail.com <pe...@gmail.com> #30
Seems unlikely anything will be done about this anytime soon, but I'd really appreciate read access to annotations, as requested by the initial poster.
mg...@gmail.com <mg...@gmail.com> #31
I'd like to not just get annotation data but also create annotations automatically through the API. So much wasted productivity due to doing them by hand.

an...@gmail.com <an...@gmail.com> #38

br...@gmail.com <br...@gmail.com> #39
+1 for CRUD API to handle annotations of all kinds - including merch
co...@gmail.com <co...@gmail.com> #40
+1 I'd use it to create chapters in a video, which I can then display as clickable buttons in my custom environment (to quickly jump to sections of a video).
ni...@googlemail.com <ni...@googlemail.com> #41
I would use it to create
* chapters,
* hyperlinks,
* time-related comments,
* temporal tagging,
and to analyse:
* structure of hyperfilms to identify link patterns
* the usage of annotations in educational videos
So please help us and provide that tiny feature.

Really need to simple CRUD API for annotations.
je...@google.com <je...@google.com> #49
The YouTube Data API v3 allows you to create Invideo programming annotations (https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/channels/update ) and watermarks (https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/watermarks/set ).
I understand that this does not fully satisfy the request from the developer community, but I wanted to point out what is currently supported.

tr...@gmail.com <tr...@gmail.com> #57
I hope google is listening and reading all above conversation and working for the people's voice as they need annotation CRUD API, This would open new field like video gaming or interactive educational videos. Currently most uploaders uses annotations for advertisement to promotions and many more. I find it difficult to use youtube annotations for large number of videos manually using the annotation through youtube.com interface. Hope all above conversations, views and vote dating for 3-5 years will be counted atleast for beta or testing.
Google just release the annotation api we would like to see the possibilities of it.

fi...@gmail.com <fi...@gmail.com> #59
Is this ever coming, looks like there has been a need for a long time. Please add write support, I want to be able to make simple direct use of annotations and the main youtube interface is just too general purpose.
sy...@gmail.com <sy...@gmail.com> #60
+1 on this. would be EXTREMELY helpful.
ph...@gmail.com <ph...@gmail.com> #61
I don't think Google is ever going to make this available. Please look at www.YouTubeAnnotations.com instead. Thanks.
mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #62
List/Create/Update/Delete API for annotations would unlock a host of new scenarios and application on the YouTube platform. Please add this ..
jd...@gmail.com <jd...@gmail.com> #63

Does anyone here develop with the YouTube's Data API V3 and iOS? Would you happen to know how the "TubeX" (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tubex-videos-music-for-youtube/id939906112?mt=8 ) iOS app loads subscription videos as fast and as accurately as it does as opposed to the regular activities.list() call with the home parameter? They seem to do something with YouTube's site right after you login.
Feel free to comment if you know anything. Thanks

Omg, I need API for annotations!!! I have big game server, and I would love to let users upload their game videos with annotation links to other games related to their gameplay. With API for annotations I would be able to create gaming platform directly in videos.
lu...@gmail.com <lu...@gmail.com> #80
yes
ji...@digitalanarchy.com <ji...@digitalanarchy.com> #81
+1 We want to allow the user to add annotations as they're editing the video in our app. A better workflow for many users, imo, than editing->uploading->configuring annotations. The Annotations 'editor' is a bit klugy, especially if the video is being uploaded from a video editing app that could do it easily. Read-only would not be useful for our situation. Thanks!

8 years to get a "WontFix". Brill.
jc...@sigmacentauri.com <jc...@sigmacentauri.com> #87
Well done, Google. That's the /dev/null kind of support we've all come to expect.
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #88
WTF Google? Why they block this?
co...@gmail.com <co...@gmail.com> #89
I figured that would be their answer. Perhaps they're saving this functionality for their own products? Perhaps it's too risky to allow for fear of spammers taking advantage? Who knows.
ja...@gmail.com <ja...@gmail.com> #90
Spammers have discovered their own tools for bulk annotations, no need api for them.

cy...@gmail.com <cy...@gmail.com> #94
The Status change shows sad support for the developer community. Can we hear from a manager?
mo...@gmail.com <mo...@gmail.com> #95
This is absolutely nonsense! Add/remove/edit annotations via API is a basic feature that anyone (even non-developers) would want to have
oj...@gmail.com <oj...@gmail.com> #96
Won't fix? Any alternative?
jw...@gmail.com <jw...@gmail.com> #97
any news?
za...@gmail.com <za...@gmail.com> #98
News? It's "Won't Fix". Google have decided this is a feature they'd rather not discuss. They probably figure they can make more money selling it as a business app or forcing people to interact with the site while manually editing annotations.
cs...@pointcare.com <cs...@pointcare.com> #99
This is def. never going to happen. They discontinued "annotations"
ti...@gmail.com <ti...@gmail.com> #100
I agree this won't happen now. It was originally opened back in 2008. They already said "Wont Fix" as status. We didn't know at the time that annotation were going to become deprecated / legay because it didn't work on mobile anyway. Would of been nice to have some information with the "Won't Fix" status back then, but we know now.
ve...@gmail.com <ve...@gmail.com> #101
Unbelievable... Therefore I must keep my own tool to access the playlist page via browser automation, convert annotations form xhtml instead just using plain API request. Shame on G!
ve...@gmail.com <ve...@gmail.com> #102
To my preceding post I must correct the real situation, that's because I've read the title only and not the thread, sorry.
I've digged into the API v3 and found the way to access the annotations (or notes) in playlists. They are accessible as contentDetail.note in playlistItems calls. It must be called (when listing) with special parameter like that /playlistItems?playlistId=...&part=snippet,contentDetails to get it, similar way they can be updated.
While this issue is about annotations of particular video (not available in the video resource structurehttps://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos#resource , but it seems to me that they can be assembled from already available fields by client app).

The annotation data I refer to can be summarized here:
It looks that the data would include the following information for each

1. Type (Speech Bubble, Note, Spotlight)
2. Start Time
3. End Time
4. Location+Size OR Coordinates (not sure how this would be done)
5. Description
