I would be really nice if developers could add their own captions and subtitles

I am trying to conduct research on developing youtube as an educational platform, but
this inability to download the annotations file is holding up research. Is there
anyone who could answer the question (can we access the annotations file?) or steer
me in the right direction to someone else who can?

it would be great to have access to the annotations, read and write.

Even read-only access to video annotations would be helpful.

The ability to retrieve caption data with associated time-stamp information would be
extremely useful.

+1 on reading / writing (especially writing) annotations API. I am automatically adding videos to youtube. Being able to add annotations to them as well would be fantastic (now I'm kind of hacking around it using the captions api, but it's not the same).

I Need writing annotations with the API. We are automatically adding videos to youtube and being able to add annotations to them would be great

+1 on this feature being added soon.  15% of my current viewership is annotations on vids pointing to other vids of mine.  It takes hourrrrrrrrrrrrrrs every week to keep up with annotations on new vids.

Oh and AutoAnnotate, along with one other web page I know of, no longer work for adding annotations en masse.

I use the YouTube API to upload video's to several accounts, and I want to add a watermark to them automatic as soon it is uploaded. But no API :(

Seems unlikely anything will be done about this anytime soon, but I'd really appreciate read access to annotations, as requested by the initial poster.

I'd like to not just get annotation data but also create annotations automatically through the API.  So much wasted productivity due to doing them by hand.

Ability to add a  Channel wide, annotation ( watermark) would be useful.

+1  I'd use it to create chapters in a video, which I can then display as clickable buttons in my custom environment (to quickly jump to sections of a video).

I would use it to create
* chapters,
* hyperlinks,
* time-related comments,
* temporal tagging,

and to analyse:
* structure of hyperfilms to identify link patterns
* the usage of annotations in educational videos


So please help us and provide that tiny feature.

Really need to simple CRUD API for annotations.

The YouTube Data API v3 allows you to create Invideo programming annotations (https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/channels/update) and watermarks (https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/watermarks/set).

I understand that this does not fully satisfy the request from the developer community, but I wanted to point out what is currently supported.

This is great news. But I would like to know about the possibility of removal annotations by API. Will it be implemented in the near future?

I hope google is listening and reading all above conversation and working for the people's voice as they need annotation CRUD API, This would open new field like video gaming or interactive educational videos. Currently most uploaders uses annotations for advertisement to promotions and many more. I find it difficult to use youtube annotations for large number of videos manually using the annotation through youtube.com interface. Hope all above conversations, views and vote dating for 3-5 years will be counted atleast for beta or testing.
Google just release the annotation api we would like to see the possibilities of it.

Is this ever coming, looks like there has been a need for a long time.  Please add write support, I want to be able to make simple direct use of annotations and the main youtube interface is just too general purpose.

They seem to do something with YouTube's site right after you login.

Omg, I need API for annotations!!! I have big game server, and I would love to let users upload their game videos with annotation links to other games related to their gameplay. With API for annotations I would be able to create gaming platform directly in videos.

+1 We want to allow the user to add annotations as they're editing the video in our app. A better workflow for many users, imo, than editing->uploading->configuring annotations. The Annotations 'editor' is a bit klugy, especially if the video is being uploaded from a video editing app that could do it easily. Read-only would not be useful for our situation. Thanks!

News? It's "Won't Fix". Google have decided this is a feature they'd rather not discuss. They probably figure they can make more money selling it as a business app or forcing people to interact with the site while manually editing annotations.

This is def. never going to happen.  They discontinued "annotations"

I agree this won't happen now. It was originally opened back in 2008.  They already said "Wont Fix" as status. We didn't know at the time that annotation were going to become deprecated / legay because it didn't work on mobile anyway. Would of been nice to have some information with the "Won't Fix" status back then, but we know now.

Unbelievable... Therefore I must keep my own tool to access the playlist page via browser automation, convert annotations form xhtml instead just using plain API request. Shame on G!

To my preceding post I must correct the real situation, that's because I've read the title only and not the thread, sorry.
I've digged into the API v3 and found the way to access the annotations (or notes) in playlists. They are accessible as contentDetail.note in playlistItems calls. It must be called (when listing) with special parameter like that /playlistItems?playlistId=...&part=snippet,contentDetails to get it, similar way they can be updated.
While this issue is about annotations of particular video (not available in the video resource structure https://developers.google.com/youtube/v3/docs/videos#resource, but it seems to me that they can be assembled from already available fields by client app).
