FAQ

What Is Free-Bouting?

Free-Bouting is an all-inclusive fencing tournament manager website. It combines many features of currently available software into a web based package that lives in the cloud. Free-Bouting allows tournament administrators to:

  • Create tournaments and tournament events
  • Import tournaments and events from askFRED.net
  • Enter results for tournaments
  • Export tournament results back to askFRED.net

But Free-Bouting doesn't just benefit tournament administrators, it is an invaluable tool for referees. Every referee knows the frustration of traditional pencil and paper bout management, and Free-Bouting is looking to make those worries a thing of the past. With Free-Bouting's digital bout recording, referees can focus less on a piece of paper and more on the fencing. Free-Bouting gives referees:

  • An easy to use, smart-phone based interface
  • Digital pool sheets and DE slips
  • Automatically calculated pool results
  • Instant notifications from the bout committee

With all that data on the web, it only makes sense to make it available to the community. Each Free-Bouting tournament will be available for public viewing so fencers, teammates, coaches, and parents can be aware of the event's progress throughout the day. Whether you're standing strip-side or relaxing at home, Free-Bouting gives you:

  • Point by point updates of every bout in real time
  • Instant access to bout-changing information such as the score and time remaining, no matter what scoring box is being used
  • Post-tournament summaries to track a fencer's progress
  • Privacy and security options that keep your data safe

How Much Will It Cost?

As the name implies, every effort will be made to keep Free-Bouting completely cost free.

How Can It Be Free?

Free-Bouting is an open source program that is made entirely by volunteer efforts. When we are ready for official launch, we hope to pay for server space entirely through donations. A link will for donations will be provided at that time.

When Will Free-Bouting Be Ready?

As previously mentioned, nobody is getting paid to make Free-Bouting possible. This means that those of us who contribute are most likely also working other jobs to feed our families and ourselves. The more people who contribute, the more time will be spent on the project, and the faster it can be released.

Who Can Help?

Anyone who is passionate about fencing or technology (hopefully both). Free-Bouting is currently still in a pre-alpha state and therefore has a long way to go, but that means plenty of opportunities to contribute. We need people with all kinds of skills and backgrounds, so just even if you've never written a line of code in your life, we could use your help. We especially need:

  • People to design the graphical layout of the site
  • Python and Django developers
  • Programmers familiar with web services, databases, and scalable software
  • Those experienced in HTML, CSS, Javascript
  • Those with years of experience running fencing tournaments to provide valuable design input
