In applying the ePub semantics it was difficult to apply some of the semantics
due to ambiguity in how it should be applied and inconsistencies. There is also
some room for expansion in regards to educational content.
Examples of ambiguity and inconsistencies:
- plural froms e.g., 'practice' is singular but often there is section that
contains review questions, need to add plural form like is done for footnotes
or update definition to include plural
- 'note' seems to imply its only a super type for footnote and endnote. Can it
be applied as an epub:type? How are hints, tips and warnings typically typed?
- the definition for 'marginalia' is ...a marginal note but its not part of the
'note' class
- in general the language for application of semantics comes across as
"rules/requirements" when I believe they are intended to be slightly less
restrictive...possibly guidelines?
Examples of expansion for educational content:
- learning objective/learning outcome/standard
- assessment (question & answer)
The current semantics are a great start but if revised, clarified and expanded,
it would greatly increase the ease and consistency of applying them.
