Oops. One of the recent changes was to compile as a GUI program (not a console program) on Windows.

This means a command line like "fractal.exe --benchmark" will amusingly:

a. Not create a window (because it's benchmark mode).
b. Not show anything on the console (because it's a GUI app).
c. Happily burn lots of CPU cycles in the background, until the benchmark finishes.

Fixing this probably means compiling as a console app, and then detaching from the console somehow.

Have asked on StackOverflow whether there is a solution.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8030831/windows-application-that-optionally-remains-attached-to-console

Responses indicate no; so a workaround will have to do.
